Email Garmin

Email Garmin with your problem. They have been very good at getting back to me when I have emailed them with a problem. It's better than holding on the Phone!!

One more option

If you have purchased your lost map not more than a year ago, you can still re-download it from the mygarmin web site. If my memory does not fail me, download rights are retained for a period of one year from the date of purchase...

Except his map was the

Except his map was the original map from 2008 that came with the unit. Therefore his only legit option, if he doesn't want to upgrade his maps to the current map is to contact Garmin, request a DVD copy of CNNANT 2008 and reinstall the map himself. They're usually pretty helpful when it comes to something like this.

Maps are unlocked to only one device. Someone else's map will not work in your unit. You will have to contact Garmin.

Map Lock

It is possible that another 2008 gmapprom.img will work okay if there is still a gmapprom.unl file on the device. If not, then a map upgrade, one-time or lifetime, is probably the only option.

I think you're right

I'm 99.99% certain that a *.unl file will do the job - if there is one on the device.
And there is a moral to this story: backup, b a c k u p, BACKUP !!!

Another possibility

There is one other possibility if you haven't over written the file with another file. Use a different computer and go to this site and download the portable version that will run off a stick. Install it and have it search C: drive for recoverable files. I have found this to be one of the best file recovery programs that I have tried.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

recuva

I agree that recuva works well but I would have it look on the drive letter that the garmin is on. And recuva could be installed on the same computer as was used to erase the files from the garmin.

It could recover both the img and the unl file if other files have not been sent to the garmin in the mean time.

misunderstood

I apparently misunderstood him, I thought he erased it off his computer. I always run the recovery program from a stick rather then having the recovery software on the computer that you are trying to recover the files on.
