Favorites

I thought I would clean up my favorites after the first of the year. I downloaded the favorites to Mapsource. I had 935 favorites on my NUVI 855!
The vast majority I did not recognize or enter, at least knowingly. When I cleaned up the ones I did not recognize I was down to 139. I deleted all the favorites in the NUVI and reloaded the 139 from Mapsource.
Two questions:
How did these extra favorites get into the NUVI?
(With a max of 500 per the manual) How did I get 935?
Any help would be appreciated as to keep this from happening again.

You're almost there

After transferring the favorites to Mapsource, then culling them to 139, you need to delete the Favorites still in the GPS. Favorites, unlike added POIs loaded with POI Loader, do not overwrite the old files so you're just returning 139 of the 935 but the 935 remain active. In your nuvi, go to MyData and delete all Favorites (the old 935). Then you can transfer the 139 back from Mapsource to the GPS. Note that you may need to remove and reinstall the battery in the 8x5 series of nuvis to get the newly loaded 139 Favorites to reappear.

If I've missed a step folks, step in and correct me.

{Edit--Whoops I should have read the original more closely. If you truly deleted the 935 by deleting All Favorites in MyData, then I'm confused as you are. Unless...did you remove and resintall the battery after deleting the old 935 and then again after returning the 139? That might help. I have no clue as to how you could have more favorites than the nuvi is supposed to be able to handle.} Good luck!

Just wondering

I'm just wondering if the extra "Favorites" may have been in Mapquest already ???????

As to the number, have you been doing much with mapsource?

As to the max a Garmin FAQ says:
How many Favorites can I save on my nuvi?
Answer:
Most current nuvi devices can store up to 1000 Favorites. However some older devices like the nuvi 200, 300 and 600 series devices can only hold 500 favorites while the nuvi 5000 can hold 3000 favorites.

I do not think so....

I thought about that but the favorites that were not recognizable were assorted towns and cities throughout the US and Canada.

Depending on the tool (waypoint tool) you use in MapSource I guess you can inadvertently add way points that you do not really want. Then you have to upload them to the NUVI. I do not believe I would have done that. Not 800 times!

Good to go now

After I sorted in MapSource and uploaded to NUVI (reset) I was good to go. Only 139 waypoints.....

The question remains, how did 939 get installed and where did they come from?

I do use MapSource now and then, planning routes etc. I end up using Streets and Trips most often.

My Garmin spec sheet says 500 Favorites.

If I remember correctly, the

If I remember correctly, the 855 saves your location when you uncradle it to help you return to your car.

I think that favorites (shown as numbers) are saved when you select vias to force a particular route.

This may account for some - hope this helps.

Since you use mapsource it's reasonable to guess that you may have created routes in that program that you later sent to your unit. Every waypoint in a created route ends up in the Favorites list.

I've never used Streets and Trips but I'd guess that does the same thing. Routes you have created and then sent to the unit are likely the source of the "extra" favorites.

That's a good point. After checking the way points in my routes I found they were mostly my standard favorites.
I plan on keeping an eye on my favorites in the NUVI to see if any "EXTRAS" appear.
