POI’s On A Memory Card.

POI’s On A Memory Card.
I opted to create several (6) gpi POI’s on my Garmin Nuvi 260 mini SD card rather than one huge single file. It is easier for me to work with and upgrade the files that way.
Can anyone verify exactly how Garmin reads and displays the Extra POI’s from the memory card? I created 6 differently named POI gpi files to keep my information organized and loaded them onto my mini SD card as 6 separate gpi folders. I tried to get Garmin to read the folders in a specific order with little luck. I even tried alphabetizing them different ways to create different orders, no luck. I tried changing both of Window’s Created and Modified date as well as Time stamps, but that made no difference. Correct me if I am wrong but it seems that Garmin reads all of the gpi folders apparently in order of the number of files within each folder (not necessarily by the size of the file) and then within each folder, alphabetically. Of the 6 folders, I have 2 gpi folders, each with a single file and it reads the larger file first apparently because it is named using a lower letter of the alphabet than the smaller sized file in the other folder with a single file. Garmin then reads the next folder with the fewest files in it and finishes reading the folder with the greatest number of files in it. As each folder is read, the files within each folder are displayed alphabetically. I know it is no super big deal in the scheme of things, but I would prefer to be able to manage the folders so that the 1st folder read would be the one having a single file and the other folder with a single file would be read 5th. Next I would like a folder with 223 files to be read 2nd, then a folder with 8 files to be read 3rd, then a folder with 12 files to be read 4th, and finally a folder with 66 files to be read last. Am I a dog barking up the wrong tree or does anyone here have a solution? Thanks for being tolerant and Happy Holidays to one and all.

Welcome to the curse of naming

What you are running into is the major curse of renaming the GPI files. While others have had success in getting the files to display in the manner they wish, I never was successful in duplicating the folder organization method.

Display Order

I have a NUVI 350 and I created several sub directories, based on the typw of file, such as Friends, Businesses, Restaurants, Rest Areas, etc.

I find the NUVI first sorts based on the creation date/time of the subdirectory. If Friends was created before Businesses, it displays those files first.

After that, it alphabetizes the files within the subdirectory.

I do not rename the gpi files. I just leave them all as poi.gpi, within each subdirectory. Too much work to bother.

POI's On A Memory Card

You are correct! I just tried it and it works. I created each POI gpi file in the order I wanted them to display in Garmin and even copied them to the mini SD in the order I wanted them to display and everything works fine. For some reason, manually changing Window's Date and Time stamps did not work.
Thanks to all for the input.
What a wonderful world this would be if everyone was as kind, considerate, helpful and friendly as all of you on this site.

Manual changes of Windows

Manual changes of Windows time and date stamps require software. Specifically, a program called Date Edit.

I use this on a regular basis to set the file and folder creation dates to what I want them at. The program is very simple to use. It has three tabs, one each for the three different file dates Windows keeps track of (creation date, modification date, last access date). Simply change the date and the time to what you want them to be, and press ok. Just make sure the files and directories aren't set to read only.

nice

That is a resourceful method. I can think of other uses for something like DateEdit.

Thanks
