The silent treatment

After weeks of flawless performance, my new 1490LMT has started to give me the silent treatment.

No more sound at all, not even the little "beeps" when pushing the on-screen buttons.

Mute is not on, the volume is set to 70%.

When I go to the "Audio Test Page" there is a message INCOMPATABLE AUDIO." That message is always there, no matter how that page looks when I leave it.

No sound when I try playing a phrase on that page.

I tried a "re-set" by holding down the start button for 10 seconds, but that made no difference.

I am currently about 2000 miles from home, and thus it would not be "convenient" to send this relatively new unit to Garmin for repair or replacement. Besides, even if completely silent, I like the lane assist and other features enough that I will keep using it for now, even though I have my c340 with me.

Any suggestions as to what else I can try to get the sound back would be appreciated.

Silent treatment

The only thing i could suggest being your so far away from home is maybe get a hold of garmin and see if they can help. It sounds like you have done all that can be done. good luck.

Try a hard reset

Try performing a hard reset:

press and hold your finger on the bottom right corner of your device screen while powering on the unit. (I use my thumb)

A message will prompt you and ask if you are sure you want to do this. Select "Yes".

After it is complete you will need to reenter your user settings, preferences and home location. It will NOT delete your POIs or any other items stored such as photos etc.

Oddly, this morning when I powered it up, the sound came back! This after about 10 consecutive failed attempts yesterday to get it back.

I will try a hard reset next time this happens, which I think it will. I suspect that there may be a component that is slowly failing. I first noticed no sound a couple of days ago, and thought, "Oh, it must be that the speaker is covered by the leather case." But then when I took it out of the case, the sound was still gone. Rebooting once fixed it. Yesterday was when no amount of reboots made a difference. But now, 10 hours later, it did!

You scared it back into working! Oddly, this sometimes works - I have had a number of devices that would not work properly and with a little yelling and threatening, suddenly just starts working again. smile

Computers, being the overly complex devices that they are, do have a tendency to become a bit snooty at times. I have found that a stern conversation, usually armed with a small hammer, sometimes works wonders. mrgreen

If That Doesn't Work...

Get a even bigger hammer.

All is well!

As I suspected, the next 3 times I turned on my gps, the sound disappeared again.

So I tried the hard re-set. That seemed to resolve the issue completely.

ALMOST all my favorites are back, only losing a few I added this past week. And I am having to re-configure my settings to my preferences for sound, display light level, vehicle, and then let it link up with my blue tooth cell phone again. All this took only a few minutes to do.

But, as Inspector Clouseau would say, "The case is Solv-ed."

However, one thing is now different. In the "View Map" view, the display has changed. Before, I had a "stack" of data above the speed on the lower right, where I had three boxes with different, constantly displayed data choices, of ETA, current time, distance to destiination, elevation, direction of travel.

That is now gone, and on the lower left there is a single, new box, which gives me the choices of displaying only one of the above choices. So, now the map display is a bit larger, but the data constantly displayed is smaller. This is not a "problem" but I am curious as to which is more "typical" of the 1490T, and is there a way to "toggle" between the two different ways data is displayed? I checked and after the re-set, I still have v 4.7 software.

Thankfully, the designers have allowed us to use the Hard Reset Feature. rolleyes It would be nice if things worked so well that we didn't need it, but such is life with all of our technogadgets.

As you have noted, it is prudent to back up your favorites before doing a hard reset. Also all settings revert to factory default, so you may have to explore the menu tree to see what options you can select to get things back to normal.

I had a similar problem with my 750 intermittently losing its voice and found that if I selected a different voice, it would start talking to me and then I could switch back to the original voice and all would be well until it happened again. I haven't see that problem after a firmware/software update more than a year ago.

.

Have had the same problem with my 1490T. Usually a turn-off and back on (or a few) gets the audio back.

I'm from the really old school

We used to threaten them with a screwdriver. But then memory was packaged in 16 pin DIP packages...

Not to worry - you can get this back

Not to worry - To get this back you need to go back into your map settings and select the "enhanced view."

The user interface on the newer units will allow you to select between the single line (2 box view) at the bottom or the "enhanced" stacked view like you had before.

I think on the 1490 this is called "More Detail" as the selection under Nap to get this all back on screen.

There are two different settings.

There is a difference

The setting to restore the display as mentioned

Map Data Detail:
Standard: 2 boxes on the screen bottom
More Detail: Stacked boxes on the right

To display more street names and such:
Map Detail:
Least
Normal
More/Most (depending on unit model)

Use the "Map Data Detail" to restore the stacked preference

My (probably) last word

It seems as though my 1490 will randomly "go silent" about one time in 10. So far, since my original post, and my one-time "factory re-set", half the time, if this happens, I just turn it off and then back on, and the sound is there again. If it isn't, I do the "basic reset" with the power button, and this always (so far) has got the sound to return to normal - until the next time.

Another word from me on this thread.

I was thinking the other day that the "silent treatment" did not occur when my 1490LMT was new, but only AFTER the update to 2011.3.

Further thinking lead me to think that maybe the firmware update was not configured properly, or a file had been corrupted.

So I updated to 2011.4 (with the necessary firmware update) and for the past 10 days, I never got the silent treatment again.

I had been getting no sound about 1/3 of the time, which I fixed as noted above, by various re-boots and re-sets.

This apparently is no longer necessary: no more silent starts!
