265wt - update map issue newb question

I just bought the 265wt and went to the Garmin site to update the unit with the Onetime™ City Navigator® North America NT 2011*.

Once I get to the map update section, it tells me that I only have enough space for Canada and US border states.

Is this normal? Does this mean I have maps updated for those areas and not the rest of the continent or does it mean I only have maps for that area (Canada and border states)?

If it is just the area specified, how do I get space for the rest of the maps? As well this is a brand new device. Why does it have no more space?

When I bought the unit I was under the impression that all maps were available on the continent. No?

Thanks

I have a 265wt and have done several map updates.Maybe you need to free up more spce on gps see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31186 .Make sure to keep a copy of any thing you delete just in case of a problem.Good idea to backup the complete drive.

Thanks Charlesd45 I will

Thanks Charlesd45

I will give that a try and see what happens. If that is a no go, I have the toll free line

Free space

It will work.I done this a while back and have done 4 map updates so far.Like I stated above I just downloaded the complete last map update with no problems. You also can look at vehicle file on gps and delete the ones you don't want.Running webupdater will get all the items back if you need them.On the help files make sure to keep the language you want. You will free up a lot of space.I checked drive after your post and still shows 443 mb free.I also have a lot of custom pois on unit.

I spoke with a technical guy

I spoke with a technical guy at Garmin today and he told me all I get with the 265wt is Canada and border states and if I want the rest I have to pay for extra maps. And the space on my unit is about 98%taken. I bought this unit because I was under the impression complete maps of N. America were on the unit. Anyone have knowledge of this? Is that what I get with the 265wt?

Hmm

Hmm, according to Garmin today, the 265WT comes with all of the U.S. and Canada. Click the "In the Box" tab in this link:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=13430

I read the "US and Canada" as 50 states plus Canada (but not all of North America--no Mexico and maybe no Puerto Rico or Virgin Islands).

I think you have a valid gripe and should contact Garmin again. But with your GPS 98% full now, you may need to remove unused languages, help files, etc. as described by others to be able to fully load the US and Canada.

.

Just use MapInstall to load the rest to the SD card.

See https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1456#coverageTab .That is the map coverage. As per my earlier post I have the complete map set on my 265.I did free up more space per http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31186 .Nothing wrong with putting some parts of map on SD card.Garmin told me once the use of the SD card slows the unit down.Users have reported they saw no difference.

Edit. You have the maps downloaded to your computer right?Click start, programs,Garmin and Mapsource.Check it out.Use the find tab and check out some places.

I have the same unit. I have all of Canada and the US. I've used the unit all thru North America with the map update.

Do you have the box the unit came in so that you could see what coverage maps you were supposed to have?

Does the store at which you bought the unit have display material saying what the coverage was supposed to be? The store might be willing to take back the unit.

I ask this because when I was looking for my first unit, I had to read very carefully what was included with each unit I might purchase at that particular store. Note some stores have "exclusives".

In my case, it was the difference bewteen US only or North America. Since I travel to Canada to visit friends, I wanted the NA maps.

Language files.

I find it hard to understand why you're already at 98%. Do you have a lot of custom POIs loaded on the GPS? If so, it would help to load all your custom POIs onto the SD card. Also make sure any pictures and mp3 files are on the SD card.

Deleting unused languages will help. A number of these files are in the 12-16 Meg size. If you save only the American languages you will eliminate abut 19 in this size range, plus about 24 in the 1 meg range. That should free up about 250 Meg or so.

If you put picture files these can also add up a lot.

Thanks all for your help.

Thanks all for your help. Had my computer guy do his thing and he cleared it up. All maps are now there with loads of space left. He mentioned something about alot of duplicate files or something so I don't know what happened. Maybe Staples sold me a unit that was returned that had space used on it or something.

So now I will look at poi's. Let's hope I don't screw it up

Cannot Load All of NA

For whatever reason, I can not no how, no way load all of North America on my 265WT. I have tried every which way. Today I deleted anything and everything I could spare. When I was done, there was 1.9 GB free on my 265WT. And still, the full map would not install. And just to make it more painful, it took four hours to abort on me. I give up.

I could try installing to my SD card but I don't have another several hours to fool around. I'm going back to my abbreviated set of maps and be done with it.

I don't need all of NA anyway but if I did, I would be very unhappy and I would be giving Garmin an earful.

@Sixeye

1.Did you clean out the help files except American English Folder?
2.JPEG Folder
3.Text Folder
4.Vehicle Folder of just what you need.
5.Voice Folder, removed any voice files not being used.I have English American.sum, English American.vpm, English American Jack.sum, English American Jack.vpm, English American Samantha.sum and American Samantha.vpm in voice folder.

Did all of that. Note that I

Did all of that. Note that I had nearly 2 GB of free space on the GPS. Can't get much more than that!

I'm confused

Sixeye wrote:

I'm confused. With your 2GB of free space now, you still have the old map on your GPS, right? The map update overwrites the old map with the new so you should have way more than enough space to include all of North America. You don't need to have space to hold the old City Navigator and its update unless you are not using the update software but instead are using the more expensive full map intended for folks without a previous version of City Navigator. Can you confirm that the software you're running is the internet download map update (numaps Onetime update, lifetime update, or the one free map update due to a new GPS) and not a purchased full-install DVD--and that when you do the download and install, your GPS is actively USBed to the computer?

I was redownloading 2011.30

I was redownloading/reinstalling 2011.30 and yes, I have Lifetime maps and was using the web updater. I deleted the old map IMG file just for grins, to make sure there was LOTS of room on the GPS. Yes the GPS was actively USBed to the computer during this exercise.

I was attempting the USA and Canada, so-called full NA map install.

Actually though, I don't need Canada at all. I need Mexico and USA, so I've settled on the option that includes southern USA and Mexico.

That said, it's a curiousity to me that I cannot install a map update with USA and Canada when in fact the unit came pre-configured that way.

Many thanks charlesd45.

Many thanks charlesd45. Heading down to the southern US in the new year so I am checking out that link right now for whatever poi's may help me out.

Mysterious indeed

Many of us that have either the 265 or 255 unit have installed the latest update without a problem. Call Garmin & have them look into it and please let us know of their findings because theres definitely something wrong.

Does not make sense

I have 2011.30 Canada, US and Mex on my 265WT, and the file is 1352480kb.....

That should fit, so you have some other problem with your downloads....

Thanks

Thanks for attempting to help. And thanks Floydo for the file size info. I was wondering about that. You're right, it should fit. I may fool around with it some more next week, but I'm not going to waste much more time on it. At this point, I don't need northern USA and Canada. Sure, I'd like to have it all, but I don't need it. I may try to install the map on the SD card and see what happens.

Thanks again you guys.

Found My Problem

While troubleshooting a firmware update problem today, I discovered the cure for my map update problem (inability to load the full North America update...see my comments in above thread).

For some reason, the Garmin map and firmware updaters were having problems when my USB printer was connected to my desktop, even though the printer was powered off.

While troubleshooting the firmware problem, I discovered that WebUpdater was communicating with USB ports other than the one to which my GPS was connected. The only other USB device I had connected other than the GPS was the printer (powered down). I disconnected it and voila, the firmware update via WebUpdater was successful!

Enamored with my sudden success, I next tried a full NA map update. It too was successful.

Could the firmware update have fixed the map update problem? Maybe but the firmware update was from 6.60 to 7.10, and there is no mention in the version history of a map update problem being fixed.

When the next map update comes out, I will deliberately leave the printer plugged in and see what happens. If the map update fails, I will unplug the printer and I will then probably be successful.

Sent info to Garmin

I would send Garmin the info you just found out, I'm sure there are more users out there that have a USB powered printer connected to their computer

Not Me

I have a USB powered printer and have never had a problem.

Did you select the wrong drive?

Did you select the wrong drive? Usually you will be asked which drive to download to and you have to select the correct drive. Certainly if you pick the wrong drive you'll have problems since a printer (for instance) doesn't have the drive space to take the download.

Did I Select The Wrong Drive?

Of course, a printer will not show up as a drive. And, the printer was powered off.
