Garmin Lifetime Map Updates

Because of the recent major price drops for Lifetime Maps, I finally broke down and purchased it. I've read most of the forums regarding whether or not it is worth buying etc. What confuses me is when I downloaded and installed the update the older version remained on my computer. When I go into Mapsource I notice both files are available. Is it okay to delete the older file? I am not quite sure why I would want the older file other than possibly if there is a problem with the new update. Anyone have any ideas?

Delete

I delete the old map using Windows Add/Remove function in Control Panel. Like, you I had no good reason to keep both. Plus, maps take up a lot of disk space.

In the length of time I've been using the lifetime maps and deleting the old version, I've never had an instance where I wish I had kept the old one.

Yes

Yes, as Gary says, with a Windows PC, you can use its Control Panel's feature to delete the previously installed map.

If you have a large hard disk, one reason to keep the old map(s) is when you're zoomed in to a location and want to see the differences between mapping or pre-installed POI files, you can switch between the various maps you have. I just checked my PC--in addition to some topo maps, I have all City Navigator NA NT maps in Mapsource starting with 2010.2. Some day, I will delete some of the oldest maps but for now, with hard drive space not an issue, it's fun to look at a zoomed in location and see what's changed from version to version.

reason not to

Yea, the price has been dropping nicely, but so has the price of Garmin GPS receivers that include lifetime maps. Newegg this week had a new Garmin that included lifetime maps for $99.99 when you entered the "special code" (I think it was a 1300 but I'm not sure of that, although as I understand it from other posts here the "lifetime maps" come as a special card that could be applied to any Garmin GPS). So rather than shelling up for a lifetime subscription for an old GPS, I'll just wait until I want a new GPS or a new map and then find a deal on a new GPS with lifetime maps.

I just bought a 1450LMT on

I just bought a 1450LMT on Black Fri for Target to replace my MIO. Be sure to read the fine print in the Life Time update.

" Free Lifetime Map Updates entitle you to receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on the Garmin website, for this specific Garmin product only until this product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter."

Delete

Thanks Gary, that is sort of what I was thinking but was afraid to go ahead and delete before I had heard from the GPS gurus here on POIFactory that it was safe to do!!
What I would like to see in future updates would be for Garmin to give a choice to the end-user to either overwrite the old file or to save the old file. That would take some of the confusion out I think.

The map is too old.

In my opnion, Garmin's map always is old.

Garmin Maps Old?

What do you base this on? And what would you recommend that is more up-to-date? Thanks
