POI's Down Load to ALK Copilot Version 8 Laptop

So I am new to this and not sure if I could even understand how to do this, but, has anyone downloaded any of these POI's on this forum to Copilot Version 8 Laptop.

If so would you please explain what all is involved.

Thank You,

Thank you Box Car. I probably would not be able to do it anyway. My computer skills are pretty darn poor.

While the ALK

While the ALK software sounds pretty impressive have you looked into Streets & Trips? You can download a very extensive set of POI in one megafile (from GPSLaptopdepot IIRC) that will provide most of the same functionality - plus you can download POI-Factory files to add to them.

What!! Be a Traitor :)

Golly I have been using CoPilot for almost 10 years now, heck I would feel like a traitor if I switch to another one.

On the other version's POIs were a pretty simple task. Well as you know,,,, not anymore.

They made some strange changes on this new version. I think they just took their APPS and applied it to the Laptop. Bad move.

I have been in contact with them and it seems like they want to make the costumer happy,,,, so we will see.

I have read allot of complaints on the S&T. Don't know if it is operator error or software error.

I must say that ALK does have some pretty cool stuff. Especially if you are connected to the Internet.

DOWNLOADING TO COPILOT

A gentlemen on Laptop GPS World has figured out how to do a download to CoPilot Laptop. Has to be a .ov2 file. Pretty darn easy.

Quote:

Installing your own POI's into CoPilot (truck or standard version) is a piece of cake:
1 - Start with CoPilot shut down
2 - Select the POI set you want to copy - it MUST be the .ov2 (TomTom) format. If there's a .bmp file with the set, select that to copy as well. Make sure the name is the same, such as TS-Pilot.ov2 & TS-Pilot.bmp. If there's no bmp file, don't worry about it.
3 - Copy the file(s) to this location: C:\Program Files (x86)\ALK\CoPilot Live v8 Truck Laptop\NA\North America\Save
4 - Once copied, start CoPilot
5 - CoPilot will immediately find the new POI set. It will prompt you for the poi set name. You can just hit the '>' button on this screen
6 - You will be prompted for the POI category you want to add this to. You can either select one of the categories already in the system, or you can create your own.
6a - If creating your own, you'll be asked for a name for the new category. Just enter what you want. As a hint, if you want the new category to be at the top of the list when selecting the category for a destination, put a '1' in front of it, such as '1 - Pilot'.
6b - You'll be prompted for the POI icon. Just click on the one you want to use for this set.
6c - CoPilot will ask if you're importing speed camera poi's. I'm not sure what it asks for this one as I don't bother with speed cameras.
7 - CoPilot will import the POI's and tell you the progress & how many it's importing.

You can only do one set of POI's at a time. Meaning, you have to copy, start copilot, import, exit copilot, repeat for each set of POI's you want to import.

That's nice someone figured a way to do it one file at a time, but the official word from ALK is that custom POI are not supported.

I don't know about other versions, but on my Android version I can confirm that copilot does indeed officially support custom POIs.

Custom POI's

Box Car, If you make a mistake with a custom POI, I have found that it is easy to remove. Just go back into the save file, find the POI file that was installed and do a delete. So far so good.

My son bought me a Garmin Nuvi 1450 for Christmas. Now I have a GPS that is easy to carry in the car.

But for the price of the Garmin he could have bought an Android and the Copilot version 8 for about the same price.

After owning a Copilot it is really hard to use something else. The garmin is ok for around town,,,,, but,,,,, to plan a trip or just wanting to know what is around the next corner or down the street,,,, well,,,,, I just don't think so.

I maybe wrong. There are a whole lot of Garmin lovers out there and I have only had this unit for a few days,,,,,, but really,,,,,, I just don't get it.

Which android phone do you have?

And which POI file are you trying to import?

I can test the file on my Incredible and see if it works.

Edit - here's the step-by-step instructions for adding POI files to CoPilot. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31770

Copilot .ov2

Copilot uses the .ov2 format. Same as TomTom.

Are you trying to import a file from this site? If so, which file is it? It could be the POI file causing the problem.

I've loaded several POI files from this site into my CoPilot and never had a problem. So I don't think the problem is with CoPilot.

Copilot Central 2.0

You might try this site. I have not used because I have Laptop V-8 and it made for the the Apps. I have been told that it does work.

It appears you HAVE to do

It appears you HAVE to do one at a time.. load one.. import.. edit program. load another, import, exit program. you cant put all the ov2 files on the save folder at once..

Correct

That is correct. One file at a time. I have loaded one file that had 1200 poi with no problems.

Are you still having problems or have you gotten it figured out?

Yes I got it working by

Yes I got it working by doing ONE at a time.. just took forever.. HOWEVER, I would like to know what it does when you say you ARE ADDING RED LIGHT CAMERA DATA. I added a huge file of them...

dahauss wrote:

If you don't need your POI files separated for naming or icon purposes then you could always merge the various files into one master file and then import that into your phone. I just tested it by merging the Walmart/Rest Stop files into one and it works fine.

I don't use red light files so I can't help you with that topic.

RedLights

I believe it will warn you when you get near a camera. I have the Redlight file loaded but I don't have any camera's in my area so I have not been able to test it.

The redlight warnings do not

The redlight warnings do not work.. the manual says its not available in the USA but I imported some data I use with my garmin and it doesnt alert me on copilot. I have MANY other issues with the program. I sent them to copilot support to HOPE they can help. Here they are and maybe someone on here can help with this:

Does anyone on here use COPILOT LIVE 8 USA? I have some issues and I wonder if anyone else can add some comments as to how to resolve? I have sent these to COPILOT SUPPORT but no response yet.. I am hoping to get all of these resolved:

1. I am alerted that I am at my destination BEFORE I actually get there. It also doesn’t tell me LEFT or right or ahead is my destination. Can this be resolved?

2. I tested 2 addresses today with COPILOT and a GARMIN GPS. The Garmin was dead on while COPILOT was lost and had be going in circles. This was while I was in a development with a LOT of little side streets. Can this be fixed?

3. when you get to your destination, it doesn’t give you the option to CLEAR the route. It asks me what I want to do but if I close the BOX, since I don’t want to do any of that, it keeps the route I am on. I noticed this as I use COPILOT to get home. Then today, I turned on copilot and it still said it was running the route to my house. I couldn’t find any way to clear it except to delete next stop. Then it cleared the route. I also see no way to click CANCEL ROUTE if you decide you don’t want to navigate to where you set. My Garmin has an "X" that I can hit to cancel route.

4. Program is missing a LOT of POI's .. For instance, I was sitting in a parking lot of WAL-MART which has been there for many years. It didn’t know this Wal-Mart existed. It did know about other ones nearby but not this one. Same with TARGET, I was sitting in a target parking lot and it didn’t know target was there.

5. Routing is wrong on some trips.. Sometimes it will tell me to turn left when you can't or when LEFT is the completely wrong way to go. How to fix?

6. I entered in SPEED TRAP DATA but it NEVER alerts me to any of them. I said YES to the fact I was importing SPEED TRAP data but it never did anything.. MEANWHILE, my Garmin did alert me.

7. It would be nice if I could pull addresses out of my EVO 4G address book so I don’t have to re-type them in and also if you could do voice entry of the data Like GOOGLE and SPRINT navigation already do.

8. It appears the maps are SEVERAL YEARS out of date. How do I get updated maps?

9. If I want to select a POI to travel to... I select the category, then pick my POI or type in the name.. Lets say WALMART. Then I find the walmart but then decide that wasn’t what I wanted. I then hit my back arrow on my phone and select a different category or maybe just type in a different name of a POI. When I then search for the new one, it brings me to the orig category and POI and NOT the new one. I have to completely back out back the main screen of copilot and then start over with finding a POI. I have to do this every time..

I hope someone can help resolve these issues... Thanks...

.

dahauss - since this thread is actually for the laptop version, I went ahead and created a new thread for the android version and responded to your issues in that thread.

With the help of Laptop World I have it figured out. Convert the .bmp file to .png. The Icon can not be any larger then 22 x 22. Install as stated above on "how to download a .ov2 file".

Works great.
