Custom POI and Custom alert sound not working

I'm having some problems getting a custom alert to work with a custom POI file. It has worked for me in the past but now won't work (on my new NUVI 3597 as well as my NUVI 1450).

I put the CSV file, the MP3 and the BMP file into a folder and load them onto my GARMIN. The points are there, the image is there and the alert even shows the correct distance, but when I drive to that location, only the standard "ding ding" alert is played.

I know that the data is getting compiled to the GPI file. If create the custom POI without the MP3 file in the folder, the file size is 3 KB. When I create it with the MP3 file in the folder, the file size (test.gbi) is now 277 KB.

I know that the device will play custom alerts, as I can copy an old working custom poi file (from my old GPS) into the POI folder on the new Garmin and it works fine.

Does anyone know what is going on?

MP3

The mp3 is the problem. Garmin dropped mp3 support quite a while ago. You need to WAV files and the SOX file program.

Mac or Windows?

adding to jfossy's advice, if you have a Mac, you don't need the SOX program, but you still need to use .WAV files instead of .MP3. If you have Windows, you do need the SOX program with the .WAV files.

wav

I had the same problem going from 1450 to 3597 had to reload sox and use wav only files.

You may have to use Tour_Guide see below.

Fixed

Thanks for the quick reply. I converted my files to .wav and it worked like a champ. A little frustrating/embarrassing that I didn't find any mention of this with all the google searching I did prior to posting here. Also a little counter-intuitive that Garmin seemed to go backwards to a older and less efficient compression format. Also a little frustrating that POI Loader does not generate any kind of .log file.

Thanks again for the help, I can always rely on the POI-Factory community!

Garmin.

AFAIK, Garmin does not even acknowledge that .WAV files will work with POI Loader. And I don't think they have ever documented the need for the SOX utility with .WAV files on Windows computers.

Don't forget that the Alert file must have the identical name as the POI file, except it'll be .wav.

Same goes for .bmp files.
