Tourist Railroads

I understand that there's an extensive list of old railroads that are still operated for tourists around the US.

Anyone hear of such a list?

Thanks
Fred

list

I subscribe to TRAINS magazine. They have many advertisements for tourist railroads. Pick up a copy at a hobby shop. Here is a link to look at.

That would make a great Poi File I wonder if any one has done one.

Me too would like a POI file

I'm not a train buff but for nostalgic reasons will no miss a train ride on one pulled by steam locomotive.

I reccomend the Tarantula train in TX from Grapevine to the Stockyards in Fort Worth, a 1½hr ride.

Thanks

Thanks Spokybob. The reason I asked was that this morning on our MD PBS station there was a great show on just such trains.

I was interested in taking one on one of my travels & wondered if such a file existed. The site you identified was great in that it listed the trains, as well as museums, by State.

US GOV - Rebuilding Steam Engins

For all of you that don't know, Steamtown Scranton Pa. is run by the National Parks Service. Steamtown Nation Historic Site occupies about 40 acres of the Scranton railroad yard of the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. They have working locomotive machine shops that are restoring and rebuilding old steam engines. A working round table and museum. They also have short train rides, and excursions are available seasonally.

I can't believe I missed that in my search. I can recommend all of them in AZ, CO & NM. Well, except the Grand Canyon RR. They discontinued the steam program and the scenery between Williams & the South Rim is not spectacular. The highhome site is excellent. Thanks Flaco.

If interested in a tour of Colorado trains

Mayflower tours offers a nice tour in Colorado with rides on the Pikes Peak Cog train, Royal Gorge, Champa Toltec, Durango Silverton, and Georgetown. Plus beautiful scenery.

Check with Union Pacific

They run a Steam Train for different reasons unknown to me. However a group of Model Railroaders took a ride from Fremont,NE to Omaha, NE. I was only a passenger train. I hadn't seen a steam train like that since I was a kid.

When in Northern Arizona for those uninterested in the Grand Canyon RR, there is a nearby great RR well worth the ride--and with good value for upgrades to parlor car, etc. It's the Verde Canyon RR in Clarkdale near Jerome and sort of midway between Prescott and Sedona. An easy drive from Flagstaff, Camp Verde or even Greater Phoenix.

you bet

The first class upgrade is worth the extra money.

Great job

I took a good look at Iowa, Illinois and a few other locations. Nice touch, adding the web sites when available. I am planning 4 trips for 2011 so this will help.
