Look out for the 2011.3 map update soon

The 2011.3 map update should be released sometime next week looking back on the last 3 dates that the 3 previous map updates were released. My guess would be that it would be released on the 27th. I'll keep you guys posted.

Update Version

I just bought a new Nuvi and have a free update expiring 4 Jan 2011. How can I see what update version is available. If I start the update can I stop it if the 2011.2 is the only update available.

Not so bad

A number of years back, a coffeehouse opened up in a nearby town. The owner also had a bagel store and a caterers in the same shopping strip.

It remained open for a while, then the owner decided to close it--not because business was slow, but because his catering business was doing well and he needed to expand it.

The catering business moved in, and things stayed this way for a while. Then a business in between the other places he ran moved out, and he took it over and created a contiguous space, for a while using both spaces for catering. But he wanted to reopen the coffeehouse and so made plans.

Time passed, and the former coffee house was slowly readied. It then sat for over a year and a half, waiting for bureaucratic red tape to give the OK.

Eventually, years after it closed, the coffee house reopened.

The point to this story? The coffee place was listed in the "coffeehouse" category in my 08 Prius's navigation system, despite having closed years before I bought the car. And years after I got the car, the place returned. I suppose Toyota's theory is that if they include erroneous listings, then given enough time, they might become true. The thousand monkeys with typewriters theory.

So as far as Garmin lagging, they aren't as bad as some.

Stopping It

No, I don't believe you can stop it once the d/l begins. The free upgrade is a one shot deal and it's doubtful Garmin would let you change you mind. If you've got til Jan 4 I'd wait. The discussion here and in other forums will let you know when 2011.3 is finally out.

You should be able to see

You should be able to see which update will download ahead of actually downloading it. Go to the Garmin site and enter your serial number or hook up your GPS with the USB cable. It will tell you if your GPS has an update...and I think it will tell you what the update number is.

Personally I would wait until you see that others have downloaded the most recent update, which should be out before your free update expires in January 2011.

I would definitely not attempt to download and then stop the process (if it's not the update you expected) in hopes of saving your last free update. You should not try to stop the update process. It goes through a file deleting process, which is something you must allow to finish and then install the new files. Likewise, pulling the plug during the update process will probably make your GPS useless, which will require a fresh reset or to be sent back to Garmin.

I'd just wait for others to announce that the latest update is out...

Garmin can't keep up

I have never paid for map database updates. I no longer see Garmin as the leader in GPS technology, primarily because the online mapping services run circles around a static database burned into my sensor.

I like the large display provided by the nuvi755 and I like the ability to set my own waypoints and routes. But when I REALLY need to see the latest info and other data that Garmin can't provide, like satellite views and business names zoomed in, I pull out my crappy AT&T Tilt phone and look at Google maps. Garmin has burned me too many times, even when the unit was new.

Google Maps is constantly updated so I never have to worry about stale maps. It has saved me several times where Garmin has let me down.

Now if Google would only provide a widget that plots my Garmin's GPS sensor data on their map on my laptop I would have the best of both worlds. THAT is what I'm waiting for.

Garmin Map Update 2011.30 Is Reportedly Out Now - 11/10/10

According to what I have heard, Garmin has released the 2011.30 map update but its availability is being released gradually depending upon the type of unit apparently. See forum on this here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31133

If you go here and view the map, you'll see 2011.30 for sure. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1456&pvID=30132&ra=t...

I have a Nuvi 765T and am hoping to grab the update this weekend if it's available. Anyone else have any success downloading yet?

Yep!
