did you set an alert ?????

1. did you set an alert distance or speed when (and if) you loaded the POI file onto your GPS using the POI Loader application
2. do you have either a .wav or .mp3 alert sound file with POI file ????

How to load the POIs

Load the POIs into the nuvi using my FAQ -

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30728

Set up the Low Clearance and Weigh Stations as proximity alerts with POI Loader. I would set the distance for Weigh Stations fairly long and the Low Clearances a little shorter. Get it working first, then add sounds and icons later.

Have you turned on alerts

First of all - Welcome to the site!

PLEASE make a backup before doing anything else. See
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394

On your 785T, you need to
Touch Tools (wrench) > Settings > (down arrow) >Proximity Points >Proximity Alertts > Change and then put a check mark by "Custom POIs"

This should give you a "tone". If you would rather have a phrase like "Starbuck's Ahead" sound, then go to this FAQ
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30519

If you have not downloaded a manual from Garmin yet, look at this FAQ
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

a couple of points to consider

The first question is how did you load them? I would assume you put them into a folder and told POI Loader to load the contents of the folder. (See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/85 for a brief overview.)

Secondly, did you include an alert sound and icon in the folder holding the files? Your profile states you have a Garmin 785 and that will play MP3 sounds, so no need to load wave files and the SOX program.

POI Loader needs to be run in manual rather than express to set alert distances. You set either a proximity (distance) or speed alert using POI Loader.

The third thing is the need for weigh stations. If you are driving a commercial rig, you most definitely have the wrong unit. The 785 doesn't understand anything about route restrictions and truck routes. You can use it with a motorhome, but for a tractor-trailer you are only asking for trouble.

Garmin lists the 465T for commercial trucks https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=275&pID=31541

As stated by others make sure to select manual mode for poiloader and set the distance you want for the alert.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for custom pois .Example of poi setup.

Main folder=My Pois

Subfolder=Low Clearance and Weigh Stations
Low Clearance.csv
Low Clearance.mp3
Low Clearance.bmp
Weigh Stations.csv
Weigh Stations.mp3
Weigh Stations.bmp

The biggest problems with the alerts and icons not working are the files not being named the same except for extensions and having double extensions. Double-check each of them. The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click ok.For Windows XP.

In Windows Vista and Windows

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, do the following:

1. Open an Explorer window.
2. Select Organize.
3. Select Folder and Search Options.
4. Switch to the View Tab.
5. Find "Hide extensions for known file types" and uncheck the box.
6. Click "Apply"
7. Click "OK"
8. Close then open Explorer.

Should be done.

In Windows XP, the procedure is mostly the same, except instead of steps 1-3 above you select the Tools menu, then select Folder Options. Then follow the instructions from step 4 on.

The reason I have people press "Apply" and "OK" in that order is simply to ensure the changes are made and stay. There have been instances where the changes haven't stuck when pressing "OK" but did when pressing "Apply" and vice versa.

cool

You do NOT need a overpriced 465t unit in the Trucking Industry. I use the 765t and have never had a problem! Use COMMON SENSE and you will be just fine. I Maintain the Weigh Station file and have the Low Clearance file on my unit as well.

I also was a Trucking Instructor!

(1)READ ANY SIGN with a NUMBER on it and it will keep you safe.... HAS for 18 Years!
(2)Never Trust ANY Electronic device.
(3) PLAN your ROUTE IN ADVANCE... DON'T treat it as another TRIP!
(4) WHEN IN DOUBT,,,, DON'T!!!
(5) GET a MOTOR CARRIER ATLAS as a BACKUP AND Reference.... NON Restricted Routes are Highlighted and LOW Clearances are listed by State.
(6) TREAT EVERY VEHICLE in front and around you as if they ARE YOUR FAMILY!!! cool
(7-1000) USE COMMON SENSE EVERYDAY!!!!

Setting the unit to the fastest route will keep it on the best and often time major roads. Stay off County or private roads.

Compare the two units and the 785t/765t wins hands-down because the features of the 465t can easily be added to the 7x5t... such as curves, narrow roads, repair centers and etc.
NO mp3, Junction view, Audio book player,FM transmitter, Headphone jack/audio line-out, ecoRoute™ (calculates a more fuel-efficient route), or Garmin Locate™ (marks position when removed from windshield mount)
Why buy a over-priced truck only unit when the 765t have it all... Auto or Truck.

A QUOTE from GPSMAGAZINE:
If you're not planning to take advantage of all MSN Direct has to offer, and are mostly interested in traffic, Garmin's nüvi 765T, which includes lifetime TMC traffic for free, and is otherwise identical to the 785T, is likely a smarter purchase.

@glwilbert

You need to look at my response again. I did not recommend any unit other than to state the 785 is not a recommended unit for OTR drivers.

I stand behind my caution about using a unit designed for private autos and motor coaches by tractor-trailer operators.

Your mileage may vary. You evidently have the experience and knowledge many novice or less experienced operators have not yet gained. As they do not necessarily have the benefit of your experience and knowledge with them at all times, reliance on a unit not designed for the task will cause those less experienced operators to rely on a device that WILL cause them grief and possible loss of their operator certificates.

Good advice!

Thanks, glwilbert, for your advice, and also for maintaining the Weigh Station file.

Changing #5 to read a good road atlas, for all the car & light truck drivers, how much better the driving would be if everybody followed these simple rules.
