What am I doing wrong"

I have downloaded the FlyingJ POI using the Garmin POI loader. When done it says I have successfully added the POI file to the Gamin 650. When I travel I never see the POI on the GPS, so I am still using the road signs. Do I have to do something different to make the Flying J POI's show on the GPS maps? joesabeh@gmail.com

Flying J

If you are looking for a Flying J station you have to go to "Where to" and then "MY locations" and then "Custom POIs" when you see "Flying J" just touch it. It will then show you all the Flying Js in the area, Just pick the one you want and hit go.
The GPS will ask you if you want to make it a "way point" you do not have to do it, just hit go and it will take you there without losing your original trip.

More

Timantide has indicated how to navigate to a Flying J, but perhaps you are wanting to see some icon for flying J on you screen.

If so then read this FAQ by Motorcycle Mama (just hold the shift key down when you click on it to open it in a new window, so you can return here)

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/4359

To see custom icons, your map will have to be zoomed in to 300 feet or so.

Most of us would not recommend having a sound file for POIs because they will overwhelm you. If you want to try them, let us know and we can point you in that direction

What am I doing wrong

So then I can't have FlyingJ show on the maps as I travel. Seems it is just as easy to use the find. I just thought they would show on the map as I travel to alert me when I was coming up on one so I didn't have to be banging on the GPS while I was driving. Do you know of any Garmin GPS that you can add the POI's to the route so they show on the maps? Thanks for your reply.

Yes you can

have an icon show on your screen. You will just have to use Motorcycle Mama's FAQ to coordinate the icon file and the POI file.

And, you will have to zoom in to about 300 feet to see them.

Sat Proximity Alerts

If you want advanced warning, then set a proximity alert by using the Manual install when you use POI Loader. Then Click on Alert and click Proximity Alert and set the distance. I believe that this will show the icon when this happens.

Keep in mind that the downloaded POI likely has more of the Flying J sites than the built in POIs, otherwise, you would not have downloaded them.

lack of understanding of subject line use

Perhaps one thing that you are doing wrong is giving no clue what your problem is in the subject line, people who might care and help could read right past it.

POI's don't show on map as I travel

OK, reloaded using the Manual setting and use 10000 ft as the alert distance. Will try it next time on the road. Thanks, again, for all the help.

Keep in Mind

Also keep in mind that if you want an icon on your map you have to install that when you load the poi file. Just follow the link from Motorcycle mama.

.

Yes, but (unfortunately) on most/maybe all of the modern Garmin units, you have to be zoomed in so far that the map becomes nearly useless while driving, IMO.

The icons are now most useful for searching while stopped (or by the passenger) but not so much while driving.

Timantide's method

Personally I use the method Timantide described above, I have quite a few POIs loaded and I find it annoying to have the pop-ups all of the time, I don't want to be alerted every time I pass a particular restaurant or gas station, I only need to know when I'm hungry or need gas.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

If you want to be alerted

If you want to be alerted for locations located off your road traveled such as truck stops, cracker barrel that are just off the interstate, use TourGuide alerts. They alert on a radius so they don't have to be on the road you are on - just nearby on adjacent roads within your radius.
