2011 Maps

I have just loaded 2011 Eastern N/America as the whole map won't fit in my 250W. When I go to maps in TOOLS it shows my original 2009 North America and Eastern N America 2011both have check marks. Now should I uncheck the 2009 or just leave it as both checked?

Yes i believe you would uncheck the 2009 and only have the 2011 checked as that's the one you would want to use.

Was this an update?

Did you get the 2011 map as an online update (free OneTime, paid Onetime, or Lifetime numaps)? Or did you buy a DVD or download with the full City Navigator North America NT? I ask because the process for doing an update should overwrite your older 2009 map.

Also, I do not know of the storage space on 205W units but it seems odd to me that a fairly new nuvi model won't have the space to install all of North America. But if installing the new 2011 map from a DVD or full download rather than an update, it won't overwrite the older map--this could explain the existence of two maps on your unit and its inability to install all of North America in the 2011 version.

Also, for others in the same boat, note that the numaps update is cheaper than buying the full 2011 map (either by DVD or download) so not only will the update offer the full North America map but it's cheaper as well.

Let us know how you ended up with two maps simultaneously and how your 2011 map couldn't fully install.

If the trouble came from installing the full map rather than an update, it may be possible to delete files on the nuvi and reinstall the 2011 map and get all of North America. If you get instructions on how to do this, it's a really good idea to first back up your current 2-map nuvi to a computer hard drive so that if a problem arises due to deleting an essential file, you may be able to restore it from your computer backup. I look forward to responses from others on how to do this or if folks who bought the full map by mistake may have contacted Garmin to see if Garmin would work with folks to resolve these issues.

Backups come first

Before any action on your GPS other than POI Loader, take a backup.

A 200W doesn't have enough

A 200W doesn't have enough room for the entire continental US in internal memory. I can't fit California and Oregon on mine and have to put them on a SD card along with the rest of North America.

A 250W has sufficient room to install all of the US and Canada. Mexico would have to go on a SD card.

A 205W has sufficient room to install the continental US, but the rest of North America would have to go on a SD card.

A 255W has sufficient room for all of North America without needing a SD card.

From my experience, if MapInstall is used to place the maps onto the device, the map is given the name gmapsupp.img. It doesn't overwrite the original map, which is why he has two maps on the device. The new install process that Garmin implemented should overwrite the original map, so the only reasonable conclusion, based on my experience, is that he must have used MapInstall to install the map.

2011 maps

I used the Garmin update as it was 69.00$ so I went through there web site and it downloaded it to my computer and GPS.The unit is a 250W and has the whole of North America. The download site gave three options to download to. I chose PC and GPS.When I took the GPS outside to see if anything changed I checked maps info and it showed NT2009 and Eastern Canada, eastern USA . I have not tried it on the road yet as the battery life is about 10 minutes. Also I have no idea how to put all of NT2011 on an SD card and get it to work as usual, the members on this site are definitely much more versed in this stuff than I so for me to do the necessary steps could be frustrating. I thank you for all your help so far ,but any help is appreciated.

Have a look at this pic. It'll show you how to select areas for export to your card (example only!).

Use the Ctrl button and click on the states/areas you want. They will highlight.

Well, as I understand things, no one's been able to explain why or how your update didn't wipe out the old map and install the whole US and Canada to the 250W's internal memory--and without knowing how or why it failed to do as expected, it's hard to suggest a fix.

If no one can chime in with a solution, it may be time next week to call or email Garmin and have them explain and correct the map installation on your unit. Should you do this and find out what to do to install more of the US and Canada, please write back and give us an answer.

Good luck.

I have a 370...

tried updating...said it worked and all was complete. I checked the maps, and it still showed 2010.10...what's up? Do I delete the other maps and install the 2010.20? Will call Garmin again!

Which device has the old maps: your nuvi 370 or your computer in Mapsource--or neither, or both?

PS--you mean 2011.20, right? And maybe 2011.10?
