Sound files on 255W

How do I get the sounds that I download from this site to work on the Garmin 255W? I've changed the sound file name to match the POI file name but all I hear is the standard 'beeb-beeb' alert sound. Is there some setting that I'm missing? Thanks.

What was the extension...

What was the extension of the sound files - .mp3 or .wav?

Your unit does not have a mp3 player.

Custom Alerts

How do I load custom alert sounds for POIs on my Garmin GPSr? Motorcycle Mama put something together for us here http://www.poi-factory.com/node/4360

.

Well, in addition since the 255w doesn't have an MP3 player, you have to use the WAV files and you need to follow the procedure for putting the SOX.EXE file in the correct folder with POI Loader.

Alerts using Wav files

Motorcycle Mama is right. I believe this is what you need.
How do I get voice alerts using wav files for units without mp3 capability?

SOX.EXE

Yep, the SOX.EXE file worked. Thanks all.

.wav

Confirming only .wav files would work with 255w. I noticed that the unit clips off a few milliseconds, it sounds like "amera" instead of "camera". If you are doing editing, you might want to add may be half a second of silence in front.

Fix wav files with Audacity

Many of us on this site recommend the open source audio editor Audacity. It can be obtained at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ or in a “portable” version at
http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/audacity_portable

One of the menu option of Audacity is Generate > Silence > (enter length of 00.5 sec). So, “opening” a wav file that cuts off the start of a phrase, entering a half second of silence, and then saving the file back on itself should solve the problem.

The advantage of portability is that one could place the program in a folder on the SD card of the GPS unit. Extra_POI_editor (EPE) can also be run from a SD card (or a flash drive). Then, on a trip assuming you take your GPS USB cable, you might be able to make changes to the way your GPS unit is acting to better suit your own preferences.

I didn't know of that, thanks for the great tip cool

Make your own typing in the info at http://www2.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php using space bar and some commas helps.

mp3 files

Talking about playing MP3 files I have a 765T and intermittently the MP3 player fails to correctly show the length of a song. Anybody having this problem
