install vehicle.srf

I have a nuvi 350. Have downloaded to my computer a vehicle file from Vehiclesforgarminnuvi.com
Have unzipped the file and have a file with .srf extension. How do I get it installed on my Nuvi?
I have not been able to find on the Garmin site where it will permit to install vehicles located on my computer.
Please help

John

On your Nuvi is the Garmin folder, inside that is a folder called vehicles. Copy the .srf from your computer to this folder.

Just curious, how did you manage to limit yourself to ONE of Tony's vehicles ? I never could do that - but then he even created a special one for me at one point...

Oh - maybe now that you have the Mode d'Emploi, you'll go shopping again ? That must be it... Mystery solved smile

About Those Garmin Installation Instructions

As I recall, that link is for installing vehicles downloaded/installed from Garmin's site, not the VehiclesForGarmin site.

Now if only there was a tool to tweak colors in those .srf files so you could customize to match (or not) your vehicle's actual color. . .

Still wishing there existed

The ONLY way I know of, is to copy the SRF file on your Nüvi's VEHICLE folder. And it's very easy to do smile

As for colors, there are a few tools available, there's a complete topic or two on the subject (Il'l let you search a bit ...)

And regarding the Thunderbird pic, I'd say the same search would provide you all you want.

I have a few links in my other machine, could send them tomorrow if you ask real nice.

Have a great rest of the day !

Adding SRF Files to Your Garmin

Due to changes in 2016 by Garmin you cannot simply copy another SRF file jnto the vehicle file inside the GPS anymore.
For adding vehicles to your GPS use the following method.
1. Connect the Garmin Nuvi to a computer using the supplied USB cable.
2. Click Start, "Computer" and then double-click the "Nuvi" drive.
3. Right-click "Vehicle" folder and select "Copy."
4. Right-click the computer desktop and select "Paste" to copy the "Vehicle" file to the computer.
5. Right-click the "Vehicle" file on the computer, select "Rename" and type "Vehicle1".
6. Now download your new SRF files jnto the new Vehicle1 folder on your desktop.
7. Right-click "Vehicle1" folder on your desktop, select "Copy," highlight the Nuvi Internal Storage icon and select "Paste." This will deposit the Vehicle1 folder into the drive.
8. Open the Internal Storage and you will see both the original Vehicle file and the newly created Vehicle1 files. Open the Vehicle1 file and highlight the new SRF or multiple SRF’s and copy those.
9. Now open the original “Vehicle” folder and paste the SRF files into this folder. After checking for the new files go back to the folder list and delete the “Vehicle1” file. You can also delete the desktop file too unless you want to keep it for some reason.
10. Disconnect the GPS device from the computer and turn it on. The upgraded file will be added to the device when it boots. Now you can go into your Settings and select the new vehicle you just added. This should work with any file in your Garmin including Voices.

Look at this Garmin Vehicle site for the listed trucks and see if you like anything there or at the other categories http://www.vehiclesforgarminnuvi.com/ also notice a selection bottom right to make your own.

5th Wheel

I had already looked at making my own vehicle, but after reviewing the steps, I concluded that this option was not for me.

I am hoping that someone will email me the 5thwheel.srf file or a link that is available in the Garmin 660RV and the Garmin 760RV.

Adding .srf files to nuvi

I just got around to checking whether or not I could add a new vehicle to my 2597 by simply adding a new .srf file to the Vehicles folder of the nuvi.

I could.

Just fooling around, I visited http://www.vehiclesforgarminnuvi.com/

One could look at any number of vehicle options after "accepting" the site. However, I just clicked the "download ?" button to get "Homer". The site downloads a "zip" file which I unzipped. I then did a copy on "Homer.srf" and attached my 2597 to the computer. Once attached I navigated to the Vehicles folder and pasted "Homer.srf".

I safely disconnected the 2597 and fired it up. I went to Settings > Map & Vehicle > Vehicle where I see the current selected "vehicle" icon which is spotlighted. I pressed on the other icon I saw to navigate (left or right) to the icon of "Homer" and pressed "Save"

Once I pressed "View Map" there was Homer.

double post

My computer was slow - thought I had not pressed "Post comment" so did it again.

Always wondered how double/triple posts occur. Now I know.

On Nuvi 660 it was copy .srf

On Nuvi 660 it was copy .srf file to /vehicles directory, and then in the 660 select the vehicle.... and it worked! (Added Homer to 660)

Then removed all POI's and then Installed updated versions!

24Mb of space left on the main drive...

I'm amazed that this thing still works as nice as it does!

Irfanview with 'raw' plugins installed http://www.irfanview.com/

.srf is a graphic filetype used by cameras
can open file, use the rudimentary editing and/or export to your favourite editor as bmp jpeg
and convert the image back

Also a way to create your own .srf of anything

Years ago I swapped out my 200W's blue car for the blue car in the 1300 and had no problems with it working. From there I switched both to use the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E). Perhaps a change to the original series Enterprise is in order however.

Follow up

I obtained a copy of the vehicle files(*.srf) that are included on the Garmin 660RV GPS from the Garmin Garage.

I just dragged and dropped each of these files from a folder on my computer to the Vehicle folder on my Garmin nuvi 2689.

On the start up of my GPS, all these vehicles were available to use on my unit.

I Wish

I wish vehiclesforgarminnuvi.com was still being updated. It was a great website.
