How to fix a bricked nuvi 3790T

My nuvi 3790T is continuously re-booting due to laptop failure during map update.
The map update stopped at 24 minutes remaining in the transfering map to device cycle. I left it on for another hour, but it still indicated 24 minutes remaining. I could not cancel the map-update process, could not safely eject the nuvi from the PC, the laptop did not respond to any command and I had no other choice, but to unplug the USB cable from the 3790 and to shot down the computer with its power switch.

Now, the 3790 starts with: Garmin logo > Copyright information > Loading Map, then it shots down itself and then starts again. It keeps doing this until I press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
When I connect it to a PC, the same thing happens, until I unplug it and press and hold the power button.
I tried everything: put it in its cradle in the car (engine running) same thing. Connected it to a Garmin wall charger, same thing.

Is there something I could try to bring back my bricked 3790 to normal working condition ?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Master reset?

You could try a master reset. That probably won't work either, but definitely something you should try before doing more drastic measures. If the hard reset doesn't help, you are probably into the dreaded preboot/cure3 method to try to recover your nuvi.

Do you have a full backup of the 3790 (even a very old backup with old maps will be helpful)? If you have a backup, then the biggest challenge will be to learn how to get your nuvi into preboot mode. If you don't have a backup, in addition to doing the basic recovery with preboot/cure3, you will need to find someone who has your exact model of nuvi who is willing to share a backup of their files.

Once you get past the basic recovery with preboot/cure3 and the restore from the backup, you can then use Garmin Express to update to current software and maps.

Lets hope you have some success with the hard reset, as the preboot/cure3 method is quite complicated and most people have difficulty with it.

See this post by haydenm315 for more information about preboot/cure3: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45157?page=0#comment-439748, NOTE: DO NOT use the link in step 1 of haydenm315's instructions. That is the link for his nuvi 765 software and would brick your nuvi if you tried to install it on a different model. You will need to find the correct .gcd file for your nuvi 3790 which should be on the Perry site referenced by haydenm315

.

This is likely due to a corrupted map file on the nuvi causing the unit to reboot...

I've had to correct this once in the past and our friend Boyd at GPS Review has the answer in this post at that forum:

Thank you

aladb and DorkusNimrod, thank you for your quick reply.
I could not perform the Master Reset, because my 3790 was continuously re-booting. I have tried many times.
Then I tried DorkusNimrod suggested method above, to use Boyd's recommendation to solve the reboot-loop problem. It worked. Then I was able to run the software and map update again (with Garmin Express) and everything looks O.K.
I will try the 3790 in the car this afternoon.
Thank you very much for your help.

FAQ

Cosmopolitan or DorkusNimrod, I'd consider creating a FAQ with this neat trick so that it doesn't get lost/forgotten with time & it could very well be beneficial to others in the future smile
