Longer yellows means ?????

A quote from the article says:
"The longer the yellow persists, the more likely it is that drivers will not stop, said Zhixia Li, an engineering PhD student who worked on the study with his professor Heng Wei. In fact, he said, with a long yellow, "stopping is more dangerous," because other drivers are likely to keep going through the yellow, and someone who opts to stop runs a greater risk getting hit from behind."

I could not decide what the article was trying to say. However, the quote above seemed to say that, at some point, a longer yellow could lead to more accidents (and I assume these would be rear-end accidents)

I didn't read the article

I didn't read the article but I don't think longer yellows help. IMO, if they can keep red lights stay longer for a second or two would help.

ex: when one direction turns yellow (crossing direction is in red, of course), then red. The crossing direction traffic light turns green. Just keep them like 2 more seconds in red.

It's called "clearing time" to give vehicles that may be in the intersection time to clear - especially those waiting to turn left.

It Don't Matter

It doesn't matter how long yellows are or reds or greens are, people will contine to drive thur red lights. I'm retied and now work as a school crossing guard in Suffolk Co.

I could be walking the kids in the cross walk and they see me and STILL PASS the Red Light. Maybe if I could shoot them, they will stop then.
