how to get the latest RGN file?

how does one go about obtaining the latest rgn file? It appears that Garmin stopped releasing them, and only releases gcd files, or lets you use web update. For modding the firmware, though, I seem to need a rgn.

Does anyone know how to convert the gcd to rgn files?

Or can someone send me or post a 827 ver 6.40 firmware for a nuvi 255W?

THANKS!
Paulie

Try this bud...

Download link:
http://www.garmin.com/software/nuvi2x5_regionfileonly__640.g...

Rename the file you downloaded to GUPDATE.GCD and copy it to your nuvi drive into the Garmin folder. Follow the prompts on the nuvi and the rest is automatic.

thanks, however...

what you said is great, and will work for GCD files, however, I was hoping you could help me with a rgn file.

I was needing the rgn file, instead of a GCD. Is there a way to convert one to the other? It seems that modding the GCD via symbolextractor outputs only a RGN file. When I install this file, I get "system software missing" after it reports success through updater.exe

I was thinking that there is some reason the GCD file doesn't have 100% of the boot data that is in a rgn?

For anyone reading this that needs a GCD file: You can go to the downloads section of Garmin, and on the webupdate page, click your browser setting to "view page source," and the hidden message of how to D/L it will appear.

Thanks for the great advice, Bandaid, I know it will help others, but just not me. Do you have any other advice for me?

Which Page?

Is there a specific URL. So far I have found two Webupdater pages and neither appears to have anything in the source code. I was trying to find the specific 765T updater page but need to spend more time with it.

Here ya go, the full list compiled by myself. To get the link to the .gcd file from the specific unit page, view the page source using your browser.

how to get the GCD

D/L and run the webupdater like you normally would. Even attach your Garmin like you would normally do. Then let it find the available updates, and when it finds them, you will see a link appear in the updater software dialog: "addititional info: View Webpage" click it. A web page will pop up. in firefox, press "CTRL+U" to view the easter egg telling you how to get just the file and not install it now. You have to use a greater than sign from the dos prompt to make it install when you choose to. It shows it, it just doesn't stress it. I'm not sure why the >webupdater command is different than webupdater command, but it makes a difference when I do it.

Has anyone figured out how to get the RGN, though? I'm going nuts!

RGN

Thanks Jake88, but...

The link you posted is referring to a few cure RGN and stuff for some of the older, ver 3.00 and ver 5.00 firmware. I was looking for a .rgn of ver 6.4, the latest. Thanks for your help, though.

PS: if anyone needs cure firmware, the above link refers to a browsable directory, http://www.pouchx.com/customers/CURE/ that has many cure files and rgn files for older versions.

RGN=GCD

Except for the update method, the RGN files are exactly the same as the GCD files.

I have also wrote a tool to convert from GCD to RGN. Trust me.

I can share if you want it.

GCD to RGN Converter

This is a symbol extractor, but if you do not modify anything, you can save the original GCD to RGN.

Here's the link:

http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/SymbolExtractor

1- Unzip top a folder
2- Start program SymbolExtractor.exe
3- Open your GCD file
4- wait until symbol scanning is done
5- Save to RGN
6- Exit

I already knew this tool,

I already knew this tool, but version 1.20 was missing one byte after the conversion, so I asked.
Very thank you for updating on your site.
Great work. Great tool!!!

yes, got it fixed

Yes, v1.20 was half bugged smile

When working in the VB environment, all was fine which explains why I could not see the problem. Once compiled to an EXE file, there was one 00 byte too many after the boot.

Pretty weird, but fixed in latest version.

Acleite,
Could you pls give this gupdate.gcd a try? This is a Japanese Zumo550 v3.30 GCD file.
I'm trying to generate the RGN file from it so that I can try to update my US Zumo550 so that it can display the Japanese NT map.

Still working on it. I will make a beta and let you try (at your own risk - of course).
