Garmin 1450 battery - killer or victim?

Just got the new big screen Garmin (and love it... mostly) Read the battery recall posts and this is closely related.

Charged new unit for 6 hrs. Used it for an hour on trip and it began to weaken (bars dropped) so I plugged it into the lighter socket for rejuvenating - 20 seconds later it was black screen - gone. Tried to re-charge at home and it was hopeless. No response.

Sent it back to Garmin. Replaced promptly. Nice people,

BUT THE BIG QUESTION IS....
DID THE CAR KILL THE GARMIN OR DID THE GARMIN DO SOME ELECTRICAL DAMAGE TO THE CAR (JAGUAR!) ?

Anybody else have problems like this?
Which is the cause do you think?
Should I use the new one in the Jag for charging?

PS. Just remembered that I charged the first one in our Jeep and it seemed to do fine... Now what???

.

I doubt either happened. You had a bum unit. However, you might want to put a meter on the alternator to see what it's putting out.

BTW, is this a negative, or positive ground system (NA or UK)?

Nuvi 1450 battery

Jeep, I've had a Nuvi 1450 for about a month, and it's behaved flawlessly. I charged the battery when I first got the unit but now almost always use the cigaret lighter adapter to power it. On one occasion I deliberately operated the 1450 off the internal battery for a couple of hours just to run it down. Then I recharged the battery using an AC adapter and everything is well.

FWIW, as soon as I got the 1450 I installed all the latest software and maps and added several hundred custom POI's. I got the eco- stuff working (Cool. Not of too much use, but cool).

I particularly like the text-to-speech function which in addition to speaking street names also speaks my destination's name. ("Arriving at John Smith on the left.") And one more super cool function is Junction View. Really helpful on those occasions when it pops up.

Anyway, for the cost ($176 at Amazon.com) it's a great unit working perfectly.
