Cigarette lighter Plug

Im starting to have trouble with my Cigarette Plug Adpt for the 660. When I plug it in it works just fine, but as I drive the plug will loose power. I checked the Lighter it works ok with other items. How long is the warranty. Anybody else have this problem..

Maybe the end is coming loose

Try screwing the end in tight..

Plug adpt.

I had the same problem, I took a small flat head screwdrive and very carefully open the two metal ears on either side out a little more than they were. For me, this did the trick.

Cigarette lighter Plug

Call Garmin

They are very good resolving problems, they will probably send you a new one...

Did you try both suggestions, or only one?

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Cigarette lighter Plug

yes both.

Plug

Do you have a 12 volt plug for your cell Phone? If you do, try tapping it and see if cuts out. Then you will know if it is the Garmin Plug or your lighter wiring.

Cigarette lighter Plug

yes I tried that and there is no problem only with the gps

Cigar Plug

I also have the same problem with my 760, I would be most interested in your results from Garmin. I tried different Cigar plugs in the truck and bending the ground tabs with the same result, I have not tried Garmin yet.

12 Volt Plug

Call Garmin and tell them what is going on and how you have tried other plugs and only the Garmin has failed. By the way how old is your 660? The warrant is for 1 year, but they are very flexable.

Don't let it get too loose

Whatever you do, don't let it get so loose that it comes apart. I had a cellphone car charger that came loose and shorted out the cigarette lighter in one of my cars.

loose?

Are you sure it is the plug that is loose or do you have a break in the wire somewhere? Plug it in and move the wire around in different areas to see if it cuts out. If it is the wire, you can cut it and then resplice it at the break.

Slight mod.

If it's just a slack fit in the cig. lighter socket, you could try increasing the pressure exerted by the 'springy' contacts. Rather than bending them, you can re-position the ends, so they are outside the plastic case, rather than inside.

A picture's worth a thousand words smile

Note: this may make it a very tight fit - not conducive to being removed on a regular basis!

does yours have a fuse?

The instructions with mine mention a built-in fuse right behind the plug-in tip. I think it said it is changeable by unscrewing it from the end. Maybe something's going on there??

nice photo!

Very kind of you to pull one apart. A picture is definitely worth a 1000 words!

I hope it went back together as easily.

charger

I have the same problem with my 760 and I also had it with my 660 and as someone said on another post make sure that the end is screwed on tight.

Mind came apart twice and the parts went into the inside of tray below plug. Had to take everything apart to get the parts.

I think that the tip that makes contact may not be long enough and not making good contact.

Same with 350

I have had a 350 for years and have struggled with the same issue I have to rotate to find a position where the unit will stay on, and even then any slight bump will knock out the power. Weird thing is it does not happen on all vehicles (personal or rental), and the personal one that does have the most issues works fine with everything else.

We just learned to live with it. sad

You can always contact

You can always contact Garmin, if it's less that a year old it will covered by warranty.

lighter plug

I haven't even tried mine yet for the 660--sounds like it's a known issue? Doesn't that plug double as a traffic receiver?

I've actually used the ac adapter for the nuvi 660 in the car by plugging it into a power inverter...amazing how cheap these have become, and useful too. They double as a USB port charger, FM transmitter for iPod, AC outlet, etc. All for $25!

I'd second..

I second the idea of just taking a flat head screw driver and epanding the recipricals to touch the outer wall of the lighter to charge.

660 plug

Same problem here. I've tried everything. I'm contacting garmin today. my unit is 9 m0nths old.

Add me to the list of those

Add me to the list of those that have had this problem. Just happened this past week. I'll probably contact Garmin.

Lighter connection

I have 2 outlets in my SUV, if I plug into the one on the right I have your problem. The other one next to it works fine. I notice there's more play with the lighter on the right, means spring tension is gone.

The first time I dismantled one, I accidentally got the spring contacts on the outside of the plug - which is how I know it's a possibility smile

I don't think that will work - unless you apply enough force to snap the pins inside the plug, that hold the contacts captive.

Fix

Just took one of my dc charger for a phone. Took out the center contact it is a little longer and put it in my GPS charging/trans and it works great. No loose of contact when I wiggle it now.

Cigarette lighter Plug

I just called Garmin, The unit is less than a year so they are going to send me another one as soon as they get this one, they are also sending me a plain 12 volt plug so I can keep using the gps and I can keep it.

cigarett plug

the in-line fuse caused me a problem with mine and it was due to the fuse moving off the contact points. fixed it with a little cellotape around the outside of the fues to make if fit tighter. You might try that.

My other solution for another cig plug was to put a small piece of al foil on the top of the in-line fues to provide more bulk. That worked for the plug in question.

There, two solutions.....btw....I simply cut off the plug and rewired it to a new one from the auto store....this also works well.

plug

I contacted garmin through thier site and told them of my problem with the plug on my 660. They responded within an hour " send it back and we'll send you a replacement". I mailed it out per their instructions today. I'd call that excellent service from garmin.

plug probs

I had the end screw come loose on my 650 car charger, never found the guts.... Had to cannibalize two other generic charger cords to fix it, it still isn't fixed right. One of these days I'll buy another cord.

KEEP THAT SCREW TIGHT!

Plug

They told me to wait till they send me a plain 12 volt cord then send mine back. They also told me to keep the cord.

Plain cord????

Are they(garmin)sending you two cords, a plain one to use now and then a orignal 12 volt cord when you send back the broken one? Then you can keep both of them. I just don't know what a plain cord is.

--
Paul..... Nuvi 765T

Plain Cord

I have the 660 that came with a Traffic Receiver in the cord. They told me to wait till I get a Plain 12 volt cord from them, then send mine back to them that way I will still be able to use the GPS.

Thanks

I have a 260. I am unfamiliar with all the other Nuvis that have things that I don't have. Thanks for bringing me up to speed about 660 Traffic Receiver in the 12 volt cord.

Cigarette lighter Plug

Just received New Power Cable at no charge. Now the only thing is I will be without any traffic reports .

660 plug problem

As stated above, I sent my lighter plug back to garmin. Yesterday, after one week, I received a new plug. I have to commend garmin on there response and service. no questions asked.

Does the 760 cable have a fuse in it as the others say their models have?

Cigarette lighter plug

My 760 charger quit working and I read all the posts on troubleshooting. Many references to blown fuses. I took the unit apart to see about a blown fuse....Guess what...no fuse!!!!

Anyone else have this problem with the 760? Did you have a fuse in the plug?

JBC

Fuse

Yes, there should be a fuse. Without it, it will never charge your 760.

If it worked before and then

If it worked before and then stopped, there must be a fuse. Are you sure you are looking in the right place? The fuse holds the center tip up, so it is a required piece of the unit.

Did you remove (unscrew) the plastic tip that surrounds the metal tip?

My 360 plug cuts off too

Seems my story is the same with my 360. I have had it about 2 years now, so no warranty I assume. I am going to risk taking it apart. If I fail, I have to buy a new one anyway...

Success!

I took the plug apart and there it was. The black wire broke off the side pin of the plug. Little solder and 5 minutes, like new again.

I have the same problem.

I have the same problem. I've checked the fuse and the wires and they look OK. What's weird is if I plug it into the cigarette lighter in my wife's car, it works without any problem. The lighter in my car works fine with my cell phone, so I don't think that's the problem. I guess I will call Garmin.

The Center contact to short

The Center contact pin is to short. I had problems with mine. In one plug it would work and in the other I had trouble. If I would move it a little it would lose contact so I took the center contact out and replaced it with one from another charger I had that the contact was a little longer. Fix the problem.
