custom sounds not occuring on 1490T

Dear Friends,
I just replaced my 650 with a 1490T. After I loaded the Custom POIs, a little balloon opened with the message and I only heard the default bong -- it did not play the custom sound. I had not changed anything from the way in which I loaded the Custom POIs into my 650. Does anyone have a solution, please?

I've got a 765t so this is just an idea.
If you go to the Custom POI section there is an option to use custom sounds that can be checked or unchecked. Maybe that's unchecked? Good luck.

MP3 or WAV?

I believe all 1xxx units do not have MP3 so you need SOX and WAV files.

Nüvi 2XX and Nüvi 1XXX units require WAV sound files. WAV files require you to install a sound conversion program called SOX. SOX.EXE can be downloaded from http://rapidshare.com:80/files/139638423/sox.zip. Unzip the folder containing the program SOX.EXE. Select the SOX.EXE file, right click and select COPY.

Using Windows Explorer, go to C:\Garmin. This must be the same folder that has the program POI Loader.exe. Right click on any BLANK space in this folder. Select PASTE. SOX.EXE should now be copied to the folder. Check and be certain the folder contains BOTH POI Loader.EXE and SOX.EXE. If SOX.EXE is not copied to this folder, WAV sounds will not play.

If you go to Soundforge and download Audacity, you can convert the MP3 files you have to WAV rather than downloading them POI-Factory. That wat you've got the exact filed you are used to hearing.

No MP3 Player

Yup, a_user is correct. I just looked at the 1490T specs on the Garmin website and it doesn't have an mp3 player.

Looks like you'll have to try the SOX/WAV combination as he explained to see if that works.

As a

As a 1490T owner I can confirm that the installing Sox.exe and using wav files instead of MP3 will allow you to hear your custom sounds.

Dear A User,
I think I did each thing exactly as instructed. I converted all the mp3 files into wav files. I then removed the mp3 files from the directory. I downloaded the SOX file from the venue indicated and placed it in the GARMIN directory, where the POI LOADER file is also located. The SOX file is 1.63MB in size and is dated 1/29/2008. I then used POI LOADER to removed all files from the GPSr and then re-opened POI LOADER to load the Custom POIs.
Unfortunately it still is not playing the custom sounds for the Custom POIs. I am confused.

"Single Tone" versus "Continuous Tone"

Dear JPG,

The only choice I found under "AUDIO" was between "Single Tone" and "Continuous Tone". In the previous menu to that one there is a check mark next to "Custom POIs" and I did not think I should remove that check mark.

When using the conversion it

When using the conversion it must be saved as PCM, 44.100 kHZ., 16 bit, Mono.

Good Point

You are right, Charles. I forgot about that a while back, converted an mp3, made sure the name was the same with no double extensions and sucker still wouldn't play. Turns out I had converted it at too high a bit rate. redface

Once I re-converted the mp3 file to a lower bit rate, it played fine.

44100 instead of 6000

Thank you for the help. I have converted them again -- now at 44100. The first time I used the default in my software, which was actually lower, 6000 (also 16 bit mono). I hope all will work now and shall let you know.

Thanks again.

Wav files

They should work. You did check for double extensions and double checking the files named the same except for the extensions? The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click ok.Here is the outlined I have for the process http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 but it sounds like you done everything correct.

Thank you, Charles. I am trying again. This time I have used your links to download the latest version of POI Loader and installed it. I also used your link to download the SOX file. When I replaced the existing SOX file in the GARMIN directory, it was the same size and had the same date on it. I shall cross my fingers and hope for the best. The only real change will be the newer version of my POI Loader unless the WEB-UPDATER had already upgraded my POI-Loader.

Thanks again for your kind help.

Good luck.Sure you have already done this. The location of the sox.exe has to be same location as poiloader. On xp I go to my computer,Local Disk(c) ,click on garmin folder and paste copy of sox.exe where you see poiloader ,mapsource exe etc.

Dear Charles,

Thank you. I am grateful for the help. I had done that and was wondering whether I might need to also copy SOX to all the POI sub-directories in which my Custom POIs are located along with their icons and sounds.

No you only need it in that one location where poiloader.exe. is located.

If that doesn't work it has

If that doesn't work it has to be the double extensions or not the same name except the extension.I once loaded a file and my alarm wouldn't go off. After looking very closely at the file I noticed the wav file had a space between the period that the others didn't.First look it was easy to miss.

I shall look at that.

Dear Charles,

I shall look at that. I did notice however that the new version of POI Loader was slightly different as it gave me the option of saving to the GARMIN device or something called Custom. Perhaps the fact that I am now using the latest POI Loader will solve the problem.

I forgot the 1450 dont play

I forgot the 1450 dont play mp3 files, so i am going to get some .wav files going but also, Some one mentioned to get this file from Soundforge and download Audacity, and i am wondering is it necessary or is it just to make your own .wav files, I got the sox.exe file ok but hadnt messed with any of it yet.

You can make your own wav

You can make your own wav files by going to http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php and typing in what you want it to say .Plenty on the site to download .BobDee converted a lot of the mp3's to wav's a while back.
