Put-in and Take-out locations for kayaking and canoeing in IL/WI

Hi. I'm a paddler (kayak and canoe). I'm considering developing a POI file consisting of put-in and take-out locations in IL/WI. I have seen this type of information on a website and thought it would be great to get it transferred to my GPS(s). Sometimes finding the meeting location at the put-in is half the battle.

I've already searched the POIs and I saw nothing like this presently available. Has anyone else started this type of a project?

Does anyone else have interest in a project like this?

I'm on vacation for the next several days. But, I'll check this post occassionally.

very cool project

This sounds like a very interesting project. Here is a link that will get you started: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6664

I am looking forward to posting this project.

I'll contact the owner of the website I saw with this information. Perhaps the two of us can create some synergy for each other's projects. I'll let you all know when I've made some progress on this.

If you used just the first six words of Pooks subject line

I'll bet Tiger Woods would download this file:)

You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.

Theres an annual canoe race on the Fox River in Illinois between South Elgin and Aurora usually in the spring. I Know there are portages around the dams, but I don't know exactly where they are.

Kayaking and Canoeing In IL/WI

I think this is a very desirable project. Although I am in Minnesota, I have canoed a number of times on the Saint Croix River between Minnesota and Wisconsin. (I have also tubed a number of times on the Apple River!) Here is a URL for the Park Service.
http://www.nps.gov/sacn/planyourvisit/upload/St.%20Croix%20R... The Park Service maps have river mile markers, but what you need is coordinates. I know when I was looking at coordinates for river mile markers in the past the Unites States Army Corps of Engineers had a wealth of information available, much of it online. I think they had maps showing the River Mile Markers, but a narrative list showing the coordinates for each mile marker. I know that when I have canoed I have often thought it would be handy to have a Garmin Nuvi or Garmin Nuvifone G60 with me with River Mile Markers as Custom POIs. I know that anytime I have traveled for any length of time away from the usual roadways it can be a challenge to get the needed data. As an aside, I like to go ATVing and it has its own challenges when on state trails.

Here is a link to some discussion we had a few years back on this http://www.poi-factory.com/node/2238

I'm doing this kind of kayak put-in file in NC...

...(as part of the NC recreation file I created) and have no idea if anyone else finds it useful. I use my own poi files to get back to places when I visit them again after a long absence, and I think they're great to have. I also share the GPS coordinates with non-POI factory folks. So, my 2 cents is go ahead and do it. I'm sure it won't have the volume of downloads that Walmart et al get, but if it serves your needs and a few others, it's for a good cause, right?
