Improvements I'd like to see

> Improve user interface, better logic flow and reduced lag
> Separate volume for touch response (beep), not the master volume
> When USB is plugged in, ask user to go into mass storage mode
> Better routing and/or more routing control options
> Longer battery life or option to buy larger battery that still fits in case
> Control for setting track log update time with on/off control
> WAAS available on more (all?) units
> A verbose control on voice output directions
> User settable distance on when to output voice directions
> Optional directional indicator for red light/speed camera POIs.
> NMEA output, serial or USB

Think Garmin will ever read this? smile

Preferances and avoidances.

Avoid or prefer part of, or all of a road.
Normally my Nuvi 765T GPS breaks up a long road by decision points, i.e. highway splits, major turns, etc. There should be a way to request a bypass, or selection, of a section of, or entire road to travel on (or not).

Agreed!!

AGREED!!!!

Option to turn on compass direction

Why can't what this shows be more of an option? There really is no reason why Garmin can't let the user determine more of what information he wants to see when looking at the screen.

WiFi Enabling

I would like to see the unit WiFi enabled so that you could take it into a hot spot and surf. Ipods and Iphones, as well as many other devices will do it. How about the GPS? This could really be handy for those of us who don't have smart phones.

I like the WIFI idea but for

I like the WIFI idea but for a slightly different purpose. If it would allow me to connect my laptop to the GPS to receive NMEA from the device that would be great, also update/upload routes, etc.

And since most (all?) new GPS units come with USB, how about a webcam interface. Could be used as a backup camera, location tagged pictures (either single shot or time lapse), or even video though that will fill the SD card rather fast.

Backup Camera support

FYI - Not sure about the 855, but the 885T is already
backup camera ready (External Video).
And the 885T Test Pages have the following
"Garmin Online" buttons:
"Bluetooth Dialup", "Online Access Mode",
"File Download", "File Upload".

Their external video is not cheap and I don't think its even available anymore. A cheap usb webcam is under $20.

Return to map

on my 760, if you hold the back button a few seconds, it returns you to the main screen.

One Touch Return to Map

I am not sure if I missed it but, it would be nice to have a button to return to the map instead of backing many times to return to the original map.

The biggest improvement...

The biggest improvement to all units should be bug-free firmware code. Beta testing should be done by Garmin using beta testers (both in-house and public) rather than having the unsuspecting public be the guinea pigs.

Amen Brother!
That's my personal pet peeve.

I wonder why it was ever removed.

Their being sued for intellectual property, infringement on three different patients.

Garmin committed a sin, within corporate community, U.S. Patient office as well as the European Office.

If you press the back button down and hold it for a second or two it will go back without touching it many times.

Having chased down the referenced patents I don't think that those patents apply to the feature in question.

Besides, given that Garmin removed the feature in 2008 and the suit was filed at the end of 2009, Kenwood wouldn't have any grounds to sue, since they'd have removed the offending features.

Zip code

Some minor code revisions I would think:

I think that zip code input should be a no-brainer and I am surprised that Garmin hasn't added this an an input feature.

The "pause" option someone mentioned seems like a nice idea. No sense in endless recalculations or having to stop a route and restart it due to a diversion.

An option to choice between the ABCD keyboard and a QWERTY keyboard. I keep reminding myself that the ABCD format should be a no-brainer since I know my alphabet but my fingers always seem to hunt QWERTY style.

RE Not legal in Ontario

Yeah, I know and it reminds me of a time when I got stopped at a RIDE checkpoint one night.

RE Not in VA

True, but is that a case of government going too far? I live in VA where they're illegal, but they're legal in most other states (& provinces).

Maybe I just missed it, but a way to view just the un-categorized favorites. Its a bit of a pain to find a favorite just uploaded from, lets say google maps, by looking through all the favorites saved.

Improvements I'd like to see

Put the whole Google earth inside and live update feature such as Traffic and Weather.
Otherwise I would stick with Magellan RoadMate on my iPhone.
