Poiloader frozen in Windows 7

I recently moved from PC w/ XP to PC w/Windows 7.

I d/l Poiloader and attempted to update the POIs in my 680.

I followed the instructions in this post: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/85.

Poiloader freezes at the update step. I researched this site and googled it. No luck.

Any suggestions?

TIA.

I think you and I are few of people having problems with W7. However, I was lucky enough loading POI fine. Beside that, I can't do nothing with it. I have to use my fife notebook and she's not happy smile

The nuvi 855 shouldn't need the sox.exe file. (My 855 doesn't have it for sure, nor does my 750). What is the purpose of using sox on these nuvis? The need for sox on lower grade nuvis is independent of the OS of the computer you're using--as far as I know. But for what it's worth, my 750 was updated with both Vista and Win7 PCs and my 855 is updated via a PC with Win7(64bit) and I have no POILoader issues.

I have not found any hardware or software that hasn't worked

I use both Garmin's POI Loader and Webupdater software on my Windows 7 32bit Desktop and my Windows 7 64bit Laptop and it works fine on both with both of our Garmin units.

You know you have to wait for it to complete. It will sometimes say not responding for a while and appear to be frozen but just wait and it will finish and show how many POI's it loaded.

In fact I have not found any hardware or software that hasn't worked with Windows 7.

I have W7 on my desk/laptop

I have W7 on my desk/laptop since it came out in October last year and am very happy with its performance. However, lately, I have some problems with 1) gps. 2) Playon software, I can't connect to it. With XP, connect no problem.

Thanks JessicaD,

I will check it out.

you may need sox.exe if...

...you make use of you nuvi's mp3 player, and also want mp3 alerts.

this may have been corrected in a subsequent firmware update, (so please jump in if anyone can confirm that), but the mp3 player would cease playing the current track, and jump to the next one whenever an mp3 alert would play.

tolerable perhaps if you are just playing a random playlist of songs, but unacceptable if listening to a series of podcasts or an audiobook.

the workaround was to employ what non mp3 capable users do, and that is to use wav files instead, and therefore would need sox.exe

no issues

I have had no issues with W7. Connecting is A.OK and upgrades are flawless and quick.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

The latest firmware has another broke

I have noticed with my 885 the latest software has a different broke with MP3 alerts.

The unit continues to play an MP3 when giving directions, except at a much reduced level when giving directions. I haven't paid attention when an MP3 alert is given if it has the same effect.

When the unit wants to play an alert and give directions, the alert and direction are mixed together. The unit used to do one then the other, but it also experienced hangs where the only "fix" was a reboot. I haven't experienced the hang yet, but the alert and direction being given at the same time is just bad.

Seems they fixed one problem and introduced two more. I'll have to test now with WAV alerts and no MP3 alerts.

MP3 player pause vs reduced volume.

a_user, my 755 pauses the MP3 when giving navigation prompts. I have only had the 855 for a few weeks and also noticed that unlike the 755 it continues to play at reduced volume when giving navigation prompts. Are you saying the 8x5 units used to pause like the 755 does until recent updates? I wonder why Garmin would make this change? I like it better when it pauses, since I use the MP3 player to listen to audio books.

mine used to pause

My unit used to pause for both alerts (WAV) and directions. You can now hear the music playing softly in the background while Jill is telling me she needs to stop and ask directions. If I have an MP3 alert and a direction that comes up such as "approaching a red light camera" and "Turn right on Snerdly Place" one is played over the top of the other.

I'll spend a little time this evening and convert all my alerts back to WAV and then test to see if playing music stops. I did get directions and WAV alerts at the same time, so I guess it isn't really a new bug - er, undocumented feature.

Too bad they broke it.

I use WAV alerts on both the 755 and 855. The 755 pauses MP3 play for any navigation prompt or alert. The 855 continues playing at reduced volume for both. I had assumed this was just a difference in the software design since the 8x5's are Linux based and the other nuvi's aren't. But it is sad if this feature actually worked at one time on the 8x5 and Garmin has decided to take it away in the newer software upgrades. Like I mentioned, the 855 is new to me, so I have only been thru one software upgrade (4.6 to 4.7) since I bought it. I don't think I tried the MP3 player before upgrading to 4.7.

TIA,

Is this the first time you are using POI Loader? If so, it may not be froze. Depending on the number of POI's you are loading, it can take several minutes. And during this time, it will look like it is froze, and even read "(Not Responding)".

Nope, I used PoiLoader on a XP PC. I'm familiar with the slow load process from PL. I've waited for about 10-15 minutes (which is 2-3 times longer than the XP PC).

I've uninstalled and reinstalled with no success (including rebooting PC).
