Nuvi 265WT - Can't delete custom POI's

I have been using my Nuvi 265Wt for about 3 weeks now and have been loading custom poi's with the poi loader from Garmin. I use it to geocache and load geocache files through GSAK. Until yesterday everything was working fine. i would load the file go out and cache and then come back and delete the file, no problem. Yesterday, I went to delete the file and even though there is not custom poi file on the unit (poi.gpi under the Poi directory) the custom poi's show up on my unit. I have used poi loader to delete the files as well as deleting the files in the mass storage unit mode. I have even deleted the entire poi directory and booted the unit up and they still show up. I did a master reset, reloaded the files that came with the unit when I first bought it (i.e. I did a backup of the files when I first got the unit) and they still show up. Any ideas on how to get rid of them?

It is the same way...

It is the same way...as you would install new POIs, but select REMOVE POIs when prompted.

Connect your Garmin to your computer and follow these Steps:
1. Run POILoader.exe
2. Please select where you would like to save your Points of Interest to: Save Options (Garmin Device)
3. Select the device. If not found click "Find Device"
4. Please choose whether you would like to override the custom POI's on your device with new ones or if you would like to remove all custom POI's from your device. "Select Remove all previously installed custome POI's from your device".
5. Next...

Hope this helps...

Where do the "Custom POIs" show up?

Good for you for doing the initial backup.

I find it hard to believe that - after having reloaded the original files - the unit is in anything other than factory fresh mode. So, I have to first ask whether or not you have an SD inserted.

Assuming that is not the case, exactly where do you see that your geocache files show up?

On my unit I do "Where to" > Extras > Custom POIs (and that is the same thing you would do, I think). If you had really done a complete reload, you would not have any custom POIs.

So there must be something else going on. Try this, connect your GPS to your computer and inspect the dates of the files on the device itself. Compare those dates with the dates of the files on your backup and let us know.

Wish it would....

Yup, already tried that and does not work. I even deleted the entire poi folder and restarted and the pois show up under extras. the only thing I did different on the last time that started this mess is putting alerts on the pois.

Are you using a Muc?

Mac users have to empty the trash in order to get some files to actually delete. Check if there is a trash folder on the unit, and then search the unit for all files ending in .gpi

finally Fixed

Okay, an hour with the Garmin staff got it fixed. Not sure exactly what were the steps but we went through 3 separate departments with remote access as well. What I found out was that the Nuvi units (at least mine) has a file protection scheme that automatically puts a deleted file in hidden memory on the unit until you delete it from your computer's recycle bin. I use Windows XP and was removing the poi.gpi file manually through the mass usb storage mode. What must have happened was that in one of the deletes it got hung up. So somehow when we did the delete of the recycle bin it worked. they say that the poi loader is a cleaner way of removing the custom pois than just deleting the file.

Thanks for the feedback from the group.

The same problem as in Allyn56, nothing helps, the Windows Recycle Bin is empty. And I just can not remove the POI. Help!

a phone call is in order. That's how the last user having the problem reported it had to be fixed.

Where do the POIs show up.

The question was asked before by tell us again where the POIs show up.

Remember that you have "recently found" and "favorites" that might comtain a reference to a POI that you have recently looked at.

A Favorite may be deleted - you have to first select it and then edit it to get to the delete choice.

Recently found entries can be "cleared" but it gets all of them.

picks garmin gpi files, even if they are not in the folder POI!!!
In my case, I created a temporary folder "delirium 123" and there were these files, and Garmin took the files from there. Once deleted all the files *. gpi from all folders, all at once disappeared (:

Thanks for the update

Thanks for the update - just wondering why you had the separate folder and why that particular folder name.

Always make a backup to

Always make a backup to another folder, I do not think that Garmin can read files *. gpi to any folder. The folder name can be absolutely anyone, "delirium 123" - called simply so)) Thank you all and good luck on the road!

another folder?

Based on what you said i was wondering where I could put a 'gpi file, I tried putting it in the root folder and it did not show up in my extras.

Where exactly did you create the folder "delirium 123"?

Knowing where the GPS will read a .gpi file and where it will not seems to be important information.

Use POILoader to put a POI file on your GPS. Then look at your GPS with Windows Explorer and you can see where the POI file is located. Now you know where to put your gpi files.

Same routine if you have a memory card in your GPS.

If you create the POI files and keep them on your computer, you can just copy them over to the correct location in either the GPS or the memory card in the GPS. This is what I do. It's an extra step if you have just one nuvi. But if you have more than one and want to share the custom POIs, this seems the way to easily do it.

IMO, loading GPI's are a PITA. I use EPE, and then the loader. 60 seconds and done!

Simplification rules the day.

Seriously, what's the point?

Because at least for me, I still have much to learn about the POI process. I'll figure out what's important and what's not, but I have to sort through it first.

I haven't used EPE yet. Looks like I need to learn it.

Let me try again.

I know that POI loader creates a file called poi.gpi in the Garmin...\:Garmin\POI\ folder of my unit.

Sometime we get so far down into a thread that the original question has been obscured.

The OP reported, I thought, that the poi.gpi FILE was moved to a newly created FOLDER called "delerium 123" and that he had forgotten that it existed. The fact that this folder existed and that the GPS was reading POI files from it made it seem to the OP that he could not delete POI files using POI loader.

The intent of my question was to determine exactly where the new FOLDER was located. Was it under the Garmin...\:Garmin\POI\ folder or somewhere else.

I think we need to know this because it might turn out to have some unintended "helpful" uses.

It is easier to show than to

It is easier to show than to explain:) Here is how it looks in Windows Explorer:

but the result on the Garmin Nuvi 250w:

In this regard, I realized that you can create a folder and throw back *. gpi and this folder is empty POI

Very Impressive

Great way to visualize - even annotation.

What I see is a "G:\Garmin\delerium 123\" folder with 2 entries and a g:\Garmin\pOison\Poi" folder.

Little confused about the difference in capitalization of the "G" versus the "g" in Total Commander and the "pOison" folder.

Are these folders on two different GPS units?

Bear with me. I am trying to understand.

I thought the screenshots

I thought the screenshots will be clear, I will try to comment on:
all this on one computer, large and small drive letter "G" plays no role, because physically this is one device - Garmin. In Windows Explorer shows the directory structure Garmin, which is present in the root of the standard folder "POI" (G:\Garmin\Poi), and the folder I created "delerium 123" (G:\Garmin\delerium 123). In the Total Commander on the left panel shows that to be in the folder created by me "delerium 123" (G:\Garmin\delerium 123), there are files *. gpi. In the right panel shows that in a folder "POI" (G:\Garmin\Poi), it is empty. When the Garmin picks up files that are in the folder "delerium 123", that was my mistake, I do not know what it will look gpi in other folders than the path G:\Garmin\Poi. I hope will explain:)
p.s. in the screenshot never shown the path "g:\Garmin\pOison\Poi", you may be confused by tabs in Total Commander.

Thanks for the feedback.

I guess the takeaway is that one can have .gpi files in a folder at the same level as the POI folder and the GPS will find a GPI file.

This might have some benefit. I know that files with names that Garmin does not expect are just ignored. I tried this just to make sure. For example, I stored a .csv file on the GPS in a folder named "User" and then used "User" as the source for POI Loader. It worked

The nuvi 500

will suck in any .gpi file from any location in the directory structure. It don't give a hoot what it's called... (So much for putting my backup .gpi files on the sd memory sad)
