Driving through the Detroit tunnel today, WOW!!

WOW, I can't believe what happened today going through the Detroit tunnel. I live across the river from Detroit and have made this trip many times with my Nuvi 350 . All other times after entering the tunnel, within a few seconds I get a warning that the Nuvi has lost sat. reception and a question mark appears on the vehicle and have to wait until I get to the other side before it continues with my route. Today as I enter the tunnel no such thing happened, it just showed me going through the tunnel just the same way it would when tracking my movements in open space. The car on the screen just moved along while in the tunnel with no warns at all. I couldn't believe my eyes when this happened on the way to Detroit and back. This happened only after updating to F.W.version 4.4 and can only guess it has something to do with this update. Did anyone else notice this happening?

It's nice feature if the tunnel is straight. Most tunnels are. I saw this with the 4.3 version of the firmware. See the Garmin firmware website with a list of changes for each level of firmware.

Changes made from version 4.20 to 4.30:

* Fixed problem where a speed of zero could be reported when entering tunnels

When I had the last update

When I had the last update it still showed on the screen as lost reception when entering the tunnel. Don't know why it doesn't do it now.

Driving through the Detroit tunnel today, WOW!!

I haven't tried a long tunnel yet. We did have one here in Edmonton that we called the Rat Hole. It was replaced years ago now. Perhaps the software update now extrapolates travel through tunnels. If your last speed was 30 mph then they might have a little bit of programming to compensate for this.

Yeah mine did same

Yeah mine did the same when I drove on the Brooklyn Battery tunnel once "Lost satelite reception" until I got the update it's better now, I think It records your vehicle speed and correlates that data to the unit if you ask me. The units can be compared to the signal on your cellphone when traveling somewhat underground or enclosed somewhere

Tunnels

Experience this also but believe they just set the timeout longer because I see streets in the tunnel that are actually above the tunnel

wondering

I had inquired about this a while back. Not sure which update it occured with, but I noticed it as well. I agree that they may have increased the timeout before the unit will report loss of satellite. I have gone through long tunnels in both NY and Boston and my Nuvi has at not reported losing signal. I have noticed the speed will remain the same as when you entered the tunnel and actual signal was lost. I have been able to leave the tunnel before my Nuvi expects me too, but it reaquires almost immediately and updates my position.
I think I saw one site refer to it as the "poor man's dead reckoning" offered by more expensive GPS
