Mapsource Issues - creating routes

Is it just me or is the mapsource program extremely counter intuitive? I have been playing around with it for a few weeks now and, for the life of me, cannot get it to create a route that I tell it to create. Is there an EASY set of directions somewhere because the manual is of little use to me.

TIA, Ted

You need to use waypoints.

You need to use waypoints. Once you have 2 more waypoints right click and pick "Create Route with Selected Wapoints". I find MapSource a little awkward but once you know the tricks it pretty nice.

I figured that out>>>

the problem is I want to do a custom route, using waypoints, and it keeps sending me a way I do not want to go...real odd...I will keep at it for now smile

Route Helpers

I just keep adding waypoints I call Route Helpers. If I want to pass along a particular stretch of road I insert waypoints between appropriate points in the existing route at the start and finish of the desired stretch of road until I get something I like.

Change your Preferences

TMK, I have found that MapSource trys to anticipate what you want. When in a car, that is easy, when on a bike, it may not know you want to take a road less traveled. Go to Edit then Preferences. Click on the routing tab (top right) and adjust your road selection to the type of roads you want to travel. Depending on the route I am setting up, I may have it adusted one way to get me to the area and another to keep me smiling through the turns. You can also set up average driving speeds etc. As noted, you may also need to insert a few waypoints to keep you on track.

Thanks for that tip!

I will try adjusting prefences and see how that works smile

Another trick is to put the

Another trick is to put the points directly on the intersections through which you want to pass. But as others have said the real trick to keep MapSource from deciding where to send you is lots of waypoints. Then the route will be "forced" to do down those roads.

mapsource hint

I found that if the route set by mapsource is not the road I want, I use the selection tool that looks like an arrow and left click on the set route and then pull the rubber band to the road I want and click again. The route will recalculate using the new road you selected.

Hope this helps.

frequently force routes

I frequently force routes to be what I want - avoid known traffic areas, use short-cuts that I know work better. I start in mapsource with the origin and destination - I look at the route, and if I don't like it, I select this new route (it shows in yellow after this) and then I use the "selection tool", an arrow looking icon on the toolbar to click on the yellow route - this "activates" the route and I can then "drag" the route to go through an intersection I want by pointing to it and clicking. After doing so the route has been adjusted to go through this waypoint, intersection. I do that repeatedly until I am happy with the route - then I download it to my 2720.

Of course I have to repeat for the return trip - usually I can copy the route and manually reverse it, but then have to move some points that are on divided highways so the route makes sense.
