Map Update

My 'Lifetime' map update card came today from Amazon.com. Here's a few observations.

The instructions with the card leave a little to be desired. A website address....that's all.

I had to download an update for Garmin's Download Manager, or maybe not. After I downloaded and installed the update, Garmin said that it couldn't detect the Download Manager. Another download and install. This time I plugged in the 750 and Garmin saw the Manager. hmmmmm....nothing about needing to have the GPS plugged into the computer at this stage so maybe, maybe not.

The Download Manager must not do any error checking on the downloaded file. It took about 1 1/2 hour to download the file. After clicking on the file, it started to unpack and made it all the way to 10% and then errored out with a corrupt file. A second download, another 1 1/2 hour and this one unpacked error free.

I started the update procedure and it downloaded and installed a firmware update without asking. I had already tried v4.9 and rolled back to v4.8 because of lockups with 4.9. I didn't see anyway to abort the firmware upgrade. So I guess I'll have to deal with either lockups or rolling back the firmware every time I update the maps.

Maybe I'm too picky but it would seem to me that the procedure could be a little better thought out.

Thanks for the update!

Been thinking about getting the 'Lifetime' map update card from Amazon.com. Now I'm concerned about some of the items you mentioned. Please post after using the update on the system and let us know how things are running.

a solution

Hi Jack

The same thing happened to me updating to 2010.30 maps, the first download for some reason wasn't good and I had to download a second time. Sh*t happens sad

Now for the trick to avoid the forced firmware update.

The very first thing you should do is the following:

DorkusNimrod wrote:

Right-click on the file named GarminDevice.xml on the nuvi drive located in x:/Garmin and select "Open With" and choose Notepad. Look for the following line approx 6 lines down from the top:

< SoftwareVersion >320< /SoftwareVersion >

The current software version on the unit is listed here. Mine says 320 but yours will be likely be 230 since you stated that your unit came with that version. Change the 230 (or whatever other version number it is) to 420 (this is the current Garmin version available). Make no other changes.

*Note that I had to add spaces in the example line above so the forum would not interpret the line as valid html code. Don't add the spaces that I added above.

After doing so, save the file (file/save). Don't unplug or power off the unit...keep it connected to the PC.

Editing the GarminDevice.xml file simply fools WebUpdater and/or the registration process into thinking that the most current software verison is already installed on the unit. After the nuvi is power cycled & GarminDevice.xml is regenerated, the software version listed in the file will again list the older version that is currently on the unit.

(Editing the GarminDevice.xml file simply fools WebUpdater and/or the registration process AND when downloading a map update)

Now after having done this you can proceed in downloading the map and avoid the forced firmware update. I've done it several times and it works like a charm. Less hassle than having the unit upgrade and then having to roll it back.

It might sound a little complicated at first but it's relatively simple to do.

Good luck !

Update.

Thanks Canuk, I've made a note of that procedure and I'll do it next time I update the map.

The update on the maps went well after I got good files but it did take a while, about 2 hours.

After activating my lifetime

After activating my lifetime card from Amazon, it took well over 1 hr to download & install the update.
