TOM TOM 920 - complete garbage, and expensive too!

I'm really sorry to be Debbie Downer here, but I'm feeling really, really burned by TomTom. I thought I'd share my experience here, and the fact that I am now a 100% convert to Garmin.

I currently own a 265T, which I purchased after being bitterly disappointed and frustrated with a very expensive mistake called a TOM TOM 920.

Like others, whose posts I discovered far and wide throughout Al Gore's Internet, I had a T/T 920 whose battery lasted about 30 minutes, when not plugged in.

The real rub was that T/T had no interest in standing behind what they sold. Like others before me, I cut bait and walked away on a piece of hardware that clearly had a known issue in the electrical design; an issue that caused it to chew through the rechargeable battery far too quickly for it to be an intentional design sacrifice.

I think it's way too interesting that RadioShack sells a replacement battery for this very unit. I was tempted to try it, but upon reading posts from others who had, it was clear that the new battery didn't address the issue at all.

I switched to Garmin, and I love my nuvi 265WT. It's more basic than the T/T 920, but I'll never go back to T/T, and I encourage everyone who'll listen to avoid T/T at all costs.

In fact, recently a colleague won a T/T at a conference event, and it was all I could do to bite my tongue and not bad-mouth is coveted prize.

Again, sorry to be Debbie Downer, but T/T really burned me.

You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.

Point taken...I guess I'm just a little emotional

redface Good point. I'll calm down now. I posted it in both forums because I wanted both Garmin and TOMTOM readers to see it.

I feel better now. mrgreen

Good, now pour some wine and relax....

That Is Unfortunate

I'm not sure why your battery only lasted 30 minutes, it should run for about 2 hours when fully charged. However, it is really meant to be operated plugged in to your car battery.

You have chosen to go with a Garmin 265WT, that is a good unit, but as you mentioned, it has fewer features than the GO 920.

That said, I personally don't share your feelings about TomTom, because my GO 930 has been working fine for almost two years now. Both Garmin and TomTom make good GPSrs. Like any electronic product, individual pieces may from time to time, not work as advertised. That does not make the entire product line bad.

I don't believe that is the problem

I don't think it was so much as the product as much as the manufacture not standing behind the product. Now whether the proper channels were gone through to remedy the problem is another story.

GO 720

No problems & no complaints for My 2 year old GO 720.

TomTom 920

I am using a 920 and keepmit plugged in when i am travelling. When out of vehicle it last for about 2 hrs before it shows low battery

In my experience TomTom

In my experience TomTom units really have crappy battery life.

My TT125's battery lasts for about 30-45 minutes if it's fully charged. My TT140 battery lasts about 20-30 minutes if it's fully charged.

The TT batteries also do not hold their charge over time, they run down even when completely shut down.

The Garmin units have superb batteries and battery life. My Nuvi 200 / 205 batteries will last 3-4 hours, and my Garmin C320 that is 4 years old will still last 2-3 hours.
