Kansas City Courts Overwhelmed By People Protesting Redlight Camera Tickets

Quote:

Kansas City's courts are apparently overwhelmed with people protesting redlight camera tickets. In fact, the system is so overwhelmed that they're installing computers outside the courtroom where people can review the video that resulted in their ticket. The hope is that people will realize how clearly the evidence stacks up against them and will drop their complaint. However, some other reports point out that some ticket recipients have been able to get out of the tickets after showing that the yellow light was too short, or that they had made a perfectly legal right turn on red. Of course, what's troubling is that while the judge let the person off due to the "too short yellow," it was only that one person. Given how many cities have been caught lowering the yellow light times below the legal limit, it would seem that having it happen in one case deserves at least a deeper investigation, rather than just dumping one person's ticket. In the meantime, for municipalities thinking about adding such cameras, it's worth pointing out that bureaucratic (and potentially technology) overhead you may be adding to your court system...

Just maybe...

Maybe if everyone protest the ticket, the city would find it more costly to use the RLC and junk it. I am not a big fan, but then again, with 200+ RLC in the Chicago area, I never received one.

.

If the yellow is too short for one driver, then it is too short for ALL of them and the judge should probably invalidate ALL of the tickets.

Even if you enter the intersection 3 seconds late, the argument remains valid. Because 'too short' is too short by how much?

It's called 'entrapment'.

Keep the courts overloaded, then compain that you can't get fair treatment and have the program declared unconstitutional . . . . . .

Everything's Up To Date In Kansas City

I really believe that the politicians can't grasp why people are so pissed off about these tickets.

Perhaps politicians should be questioned during election season as to their stance on redlight & speed cameras. THAT should be made public. It might put a twist in their shorts.

Fred

Is a Class Action Suit Possible?

If a judge rules that a particular ticket is invalid because the a yellow light time was too short, wonder if ticketed folks could then file a class action suit against the city?? That would probably make them correct the yellow light or maybe get rid of the cameras.

Not that easy

It's really not that easy. Read the article from the U.S. House of representatives at http://www.thenewspaper.com/rlc/reports/rlcreport5.asp and you will see a different prospective.
