POI Question (list on the GPS does not show all locations)

I haven't really used my Nuvi 650 much since I got it. That will change soon when we head south for the winter.

In preparation, I've been loading various custom POI's into my unit. After loading them in, I decided to check and see if they installed correctly.

I selected the extras folder and then loaded in the Flying J file. The file should have around 270 locations in it. However, when selecting the file and scrolling through the results, I can only access locations up to approx. 1700 kilometers (1050 miles) from my current location and then the unit beeps every time I touch the down scroll arrow and does not scroll through any more locations. Thinking it was maybe a problem with that particular file, I chose another file (Shell Stations) and the same happened. I could not scroll through the entire list of locations.

Is this normal?? Does the POIs only show up for a certain default distance?? Will the other locations show up if I am in another part of the country?

The unit only displays about the 50 closest locations regardless of the total distance.

Perhaps the easier way to check to see if they are loaded would be to use Extra_POI_Editor and have it display them on a Google map, but why not just assume if you can see that many, the rest are there as well?

If you count the number of lines in all your poi files you are loading, that number should equal what POILoader tells you when it is done.

Other search options

From the Where To screen you can also press the Near... button and then you have a choice of other search locations:
- Where I am Now
- A Different City
- My Current Route
- My Destination
(The last two are only available if you have a destination programmed in.)

Simulation mode

It has been my experience also that you can only display a finite number of POI either in a circle around you or along a route if it is lengthy.

You might put the unit into simulator mode, change your location to a point in Florida (about as far as you can get from BC) and then ask for this list again. You should then see points that radiate from your new location that weren't in the original list. That will confirm that all the points will be available to you as you travel away from home.
