iPhones 3GS, 4GS and Beyond, GPS Applications and other iPhone Topics

Hey,
Apple App Store had been releasing several GPS applications as well as other useful location based applications. This discussion is to enlighten you, myself and others about features and benefits that exists out there in this new era of smart-phone GPS software, and maybe it will help you to make a smarter decision when you shop for your new GPS...!. The market prediction is, GPS standalone units like (Garmin, Magellan,..) will be diminishing in the few next years..

I know one free, that i use

I know one free, that i use for mapping my cycling tours. It's called Sportypal. It's for cycling/running or any type of movement activities eve driving with car. www.sportypal.com
Hope you'll like it.

PoiPoi app for the iPhone

I tried the PoiPoi iPhone app and find it quite convenient, basically I can load all my custom POIs into the iPhone, where I can see them on the map, one at a time, or the whole file.

The program integrates nicely with the google maps application on the iPhone.

It can also make calls to the POIs, when the phone number has been set for the POI.

The csv files that it uses required a little tweaking from what Garmin's POI loader requires, but nothing that a script can't handle. It also uses the custom icons with the same naming convention as the Garmin nuvi.

Because of its integration with google, it requires certain special characters not to be used, and the phone has to be indicated preceded with a greater than symbol. Also, the app has a few bugs and can use some improvement, but I find it useful "as is" to have access to all my custom POIs right from the iPhone.

The only caution is to be aware that to see all entries in the map, the way it works is that sends the entire file to the app server, where the file gets converted to kml format required by google, so for any POIs where privacy or confidentiality is a concern - I would not recommend using this application.

Geocaching

If you're doing geocaching and use geocaching.com to search for and log caches, they have a great companion iPhone app, Geocaching.

It has many features to make geocaching easier. One of my favorites is that you don't have to plan your hunts in advance (getting coordinates and printouts). The iPhone will identify nearby caches, display a map (street or satellite view), description, show cache log, hint, post log, and link to geocaching.com. I still prefer a handheld GPS receiver for final searching, but this app is a great complement.

i like waze

i like waze

Waze not there!

I searched for "waze" on the app store and nothing came up.

Maybe it has been removed, or is there an alternate spelling?

Okia, let me make a try, now

waze doesn't seem available in Canada

Thanks Robert for double-checking.

I think that the application is not available for Canada, so the app store doesn't even show it up here. I checked the app site www.waze.com and the application sure sounds interesting, but we'll have to wait for it up here!

Is there any other iPhone Canadian person that could confirm this please?

I think the droid is going to kill it

Re: droid

It won't kill the iPhone. Just hold people's attention until the rumored Apple "World Phone" hits the streets next year that will work on another popular US carrier's 3G technology and the coming 4G as well.

LSchwabe: For that money you can get

For that money you can get NavigArt, that will find you anything you want and also take you there!

POI search is amazing in this app. Here are some examples of what I found.

Searching for Formula 1 circuits (typing f1 circuits in Advanced Search "Place:" field). I've got results containing website address that can be accessed directly from the app and even phone numbers that can be called also directly from the app.

Searching for top gear's circuit in the same way as above by entering top gear. First result named Top Gear Dog was the location of the circuit!smile

Searching for ME in the same way as above by entering may last name only!
Results contained locations that I've visited so far around the world! shock

Needles to say that also when I'm looking for POI around my location (for restaurants, gas stations, bus station, etc) I get almost everything that is physically there. And all these by just pressing a button.

Ah, almost forgot...the user guide is quite unique. It's simulates and explains application actions.

NavigArt

Now that is cool, I like it...

iphone app for hiking showing topo maps?

I was wondering if anyone has found some that work well, where the detail is great enough to make it practical to use on the phone's screen, and there are a lot of (hopefully free, or inexpensive) topos that can be downloaded, at a scale like 1:24K.

Many of the GPS apps are offered in two flavors, standard and lite or free version. Check the lite version, it might help you find what you looking for.

City Walking?

Any good apps for walking in the city (with or without POIs)? The main problem with my Garmin is that when you get in skyscraper canyons, you lose the signal and are lost. Or are the iPhone apps in the same boat?

Try This one

Looking at various GPS apps, they seem to not work in skyscraper canyons either. For example, Mobile-X says:

"GPS requires a direct "line-of-sight" to communicate with satellites. Your iPhone 3G or 3GS must have a clear view of the sky to locate at least three satellites in order to give accurate position information. If you are indoors, in a wooded area or surrounded by buildings, you may be unable to acquire an accurate signal."

I've been playing around

I've been playing around with Navigon and Tom Tom. Both have great features. I gave my Garmin 255W to my wife for her car as I didn't need it anymore with having the 2 on m phone.

next..

I'd like to see a discount of some sort on the traffic and 3d panoramic view mode. These both would be nice to have, but are a little pricey I think.

Navigon vs Tom Tom

have you made any realistic comparison and preferences yet..?

i made the same buy and im very pleased

I'll chime in

I got the Navigon for my iphone 4 as well. I'm comfortable enough with it that on my last business trip the Garmin 760 stayed in the bag the entire trip except when I needed an address from my favorites list. Would really like a workable solution to hold my phone so I can easily see the screen, but that's not Navigon's fault. Recommended to my friends.

I'm ready to leave my NUVI at home and get the Navigon but I had a few questions.
On the Navigon, can you exclude roads from your route? How much do they want for the yearly map updates?
Does anyone know how the IPhone 4 GPS does without line-of-sight?
How is the route preference? I remember when I owned a Navigon that the route were slightly different than the Garmin route.
Can you add POI's and can you use the Google maps SEND feature?
Thanks in advance!

I am only responding to some of your concerns below

  • Road Exclusion, is limited by Traffic congestion, this means if you had bought the $9.0 Traffic Package, you can exclude roads marked as congested
  • Navigon currently sells with no map update. I haven’t seen options for map update yet..
  • GPS quality is as good as your AT&T service. I am playing with my iphone at building basement where I have only one bar and Navigon is offering a simulated route for the poor signal quality.
  • For your POI concerns, Current Version doesn’t support custom POI
  • Once you planned a route, you can send it to another Navigon user, where they can click on the route name in the e-mail and start using the mobile Navigon immediately.
