POI altert mingled question

My poi alerts worked fine. I then created master folders and mixed poi's of the same type in one folder. In that folder I placed each poi file, the icon, and the alert file. Now none of the alerts work. Do I have to segregate them into their own folders again?

I have a main file with all

I have a main file with all the poi's in it. Within that folder is a subfile for each poi that I want to asscociate a picture/icon or sound with. Naturally each file within the sub folder has to have the same name or the sounds/icons won't show up. If I don't have the individual file tied to an icon or sound it is just within the main file.
I don't put 2 poi files within the same sub folder.

This should not be a problem

I am assuming you originally had put all of your POI files into a single folder and ran POI Loader against that and now you grouped similar POI into sub-folders.

Old way
\MY POI
cracker barrel.csv
mcdonalds.csv
Loves.gpx
Loves.bmp
Redlights.csv
Loves.wav
etc

New way
\MY POI
\Restaurants
cracker barrel.csv
mcdonalds.csv
\Fuel
Loves.gpx
Loves.bmp
Loves.wav
\Safety
Redlights.csv

This will work. 2 things to note: You can have only one sub-layer of folders. As you also mentioned, all related files (poi, icon, and alert) must be in the same folder and their spelling must be exact. You still run POI Loader against the higher level folder (e.g. MY POI) and it will find anything in that folder and the 1 layer of sub-folders.

My structure is like the "New way" example and the alerts all work correctly.

I am using a Garmin 7200

I am using a Garmin 7200 which will use mp3. This is how they are loaded. The only one that works is the Redlights.

New way
\MY POI
\Restaurants
cracker barrel.csv
mcdonalds.csv
\Fuel
Loves.gpx
Loves.bmp
Loves.mp3
Flying J.gpx
Flying J.bmp
Flying J.mp3
\Redlights
Redlights.csv
Redlights.mp3

It's a matter of choice

You can, and it has certain advantages. For example, if you create a folder for gas stations and then put all the various fuel stops in that folder you will have some flexibility. When you open Extras - Custom POI, in the list you will see Gas Stations. Within that you will see All Categories, Flying-J, Loves, Pilot, T/A, etc. - Whatever you had copied into that folder. If the icon and sound files were named properly, they will work just as well in either structure.

If you are specifically looking for a Loves along your route, select Loves, but if you are interested in any, select All Categories and you will get a list in increasing distance of all in the Gas Stations list, not just the Loves.

Of course this is a personal preference matter. The nüvi offers this level of flexibility but it is important to remember that only one level of sub-folders will work. Other sub-folders if nested within them are ignored.

Do you have alerts set for the other files you want alert for?

Redlights (abbreviated here for convenience) is a special type of file. I think because each entry has rlc as part of the name it triggers the alert. Including the word TourGuide in the file name will also trigger a different type of proximity alert. If a number is in a file name or in a name field within a poi file, it will trigger a speed alert.

You can also set an alert for a particular poi file by loading the files in manual mode and then setting a distance or speed value for each file that you want an alert. Be aware, the next time you run POI Loader, you will have to repeat those steps for those files, else the alert is lost. You can also use Extra_POI_Editor to set an alert and save the file as a gpx and then you can load the files in normal mode. But then if you grab a new Loves file, and you desire an alert for it, you have to remember to edit it and save it as a gpx again.

This function is built into the red light camera files, so no fuss needed for them.

There is a lot of detail on this in the FAQ here.

Now you have me thinking I did all of that but went one step further. After I set the alerts using Extra_Poi_Editor, I converted the files to csv files. Maybe that is what is causing me the problem. Since I converted them, I would have to reset the alerts manually.

Once you converted them back

Once you converted them back to csv you lost the built in alert.Best to leave them as Gpx and build the alarms in using Extra Poi Editor so you will not have to use the manual mode.

If you set proximity and or speed alerts using EPE in a GPX file, then you have to set the alerts manually in POILoader when converting to a CSV as you cannot carry proximity or speed information over to a CSV. As a note, I convert almost all my files to GPX so I can set an alert easily. I convert the red light file to a GPX and set a 650 foot distance alert using proximity. For the speed cameras, I rename the file to Speed Cameras 25 and leave it as a CSV. This sets a default speed of 25 with those cameras having speed info setting their own alert speed.

The other reason I convert files is to use Bluetooth. The Bluetooth won't dial a phone number from a CSV while it will from a GPX. Once my files are updated and converted, everything is loaded using Express.

Thanks to all of you who

Thanks to all of you who replied. I will reset the ones I want to have alerts as GPX files.

In the Edit menu, use the function "Replace Field"

In the Edit menu, use the function "Replace Field" to replace all POI proximity or speed in a single operation. No need to do this POI per POI.

Just what

This discussion was just what I was looking for on how to work with POI files. Thanks

I use the built in alerts to keep from using the manual mode for poiloader. Here is some information that may help if just starting out on using Extra Poi Editor for built in alerts.

You can download Extra Poi Editor at http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and build the alert in. Once you download the program
you will need to set up the preferences you want first. Under options click on preferences. For example using ft for input. Under units you will see editor, select Imperial/US. For Field Read and Field save select Metric. After setting your preferences click on file and click open to select from your computer the file you want to build the alerts for. Then go to edit and click on replace field. Once the next screen comes up use the down arrow for Field name and pick proximity. Under new field value put in the distance you want for the alert. Then click replace all. You now have alert set for each custom poi. Then save the gpx file.

Is ver 4.22 considered to be out of beta test now? I thought I remember reading that there were some bugs or maybe it was just some untested features that have now been tested.

beta is v4.31

Yes, v4.31 is a beta. Everything works fine except the "View All POIs on Map". Otherwise, it's good.
