Speech recognition

Does speech recogniton add to the GPS experience? I understand that the Garmin 850 and 880 use SR and both have subsequently been discontinued. Are there newer models coming out with SR? Was it just a temporary fling?

8x5

The 855 and 885T are the current models with voice navigation.

I would think SR would add to the experience. I have a 760, which doesn't have SR. I am very happy with the 760, but would like to try an 800 series that does have SR to see for myself.

While I don't have first hand knowledge of the SR GPSrs, Bob Cohen, Redmond, WA ownes one and loves it. He was so kind to write a very interesting article for the GARMIN NUVI TRICKS, TIPS, WORK AROUNDS, HINTS SECRETS AND IDEAS Web site:

YOUR TRIP IS AT YOUR COMMAND
----- Better Spoken Commands For The nüvi 800 Series

[see the article on page 7/8X5 - 02]

in which he suggests even more ways to make the commands operate with additional un-documented commands.

He sez that the instrument is quite intutive and much safer than touching your screen while driving.

See what he has to say about the SR models.

I understand that some States are toying with the idea of legislating for ONLY voice activated SR models to be acceptable. I don't know how they are going to do this but SR only may be the future.

Some New Jersey examples. See

I have and use SR with my 885T and can attest to the fact that it definitely adds to the experience. It's just a matter of training yourself to use it. In the beginnng, I found myslef continuing to tap the screen but after a while, I got used to it and found it to be an asset, not having to look at the screen as much.

Haven't tried it...

...but see the appeal, if it works well. It's definitely the must-have feature for my next GPS upgrade. I often want to change my route, en route, and know it's dangerous to be jiggering with a GPS device while driving. I try to pull off to do it whenever possible, but it isn't always possible.

Yes, I do like the Speech Recognition. and I do have an 855.

But, I'll say the same thing here as on other boards. There's nothing undocumented! Well if you say everything has to be written down yes, but the user manual, and the quick guide, clearly state:

Speak ANY text on the screen
Speak Shortcut commands (and lists them)
Speak the name of a popular place
Speak an address

For the popular places and address they make best guesses, and give you a list.
