Favorites must be stored on the device. They cannot be stored on the the SD card. Well, more correctly, you could put them there, but the unit cannot read them from there. Plus, there is dedicated space on the unit for the Favorites.
In addition, there's no way (on the unit itself) to create, edit, or modify Custom POIs. All the modification must be done on the computer and then the location must be loaded to the unit with Garmin's POI loader software.
If you want the locations in your Favorites to be Custom POIs, then you must send them from the unit to software on your computer (both EasyGPS and MapSource will work).
Then save the file as a GPX format and then load THAT file with the rest of your Custom POIs to the unit.
Can't you create a GPX file with the same file name as the favorites file on your unit ( I believe that is custom.gpx) delete the old file from your unit and then place the new file in its place. When you turn on your unit won't the new file load itself into the old favorites file location on your unit? seems like I have done something like this in the past. Maybe not.
