MSN Direct Receiver GDB 50 Reset

Just a heads-up to MSN Direct subscribers using receiver GDB 50. I noticed my MSN Direct hung up for a couple of days giving me no service even though the subscription status screen said 'subsciption active', battery indicator 'full', and it displayed 2 of 3 green signal level bars.
I had the MSN Direct people send a reset which did not work. Then they said I was in a different service area and resent another reset for that service area. Still no joy.
Next, with GPS off, I unplugged charger/receiver from 12v power and poked a paper clip into RESET hole; a tiny hole located on the charger/receiver. Press and hold for 5 seconds then plug back in and turn on GPS.
Bingo! That did it. Service was restored and now all 3 green signal bars are displayed. I hope this helps someone avoid the frustration of no service.
Lesson learned: If not receiving MSN Direct, try manual reset first.

Thank you for your insight. But some, like myself, may have received their units without the receiver manual, which can be downloaded from Garmin. And even it only mentions the reset button in a footnote like warning that says pressing it will delete stored data. At any rate the manual can be downloaded at: http://www.garmin.com/manuals/2352_MSNDirectOwnersManualSupp...

I find myself using the "reset" button far too often. Maybe once every couple weeks. I keep a pushpin in my car so I can push the reset button. Might not be as safe as a paper clip. Although, I do not unplug the GPS from the adaptor, nor do I power off the GPS when I push the reset button.

I noticed my traffic was acting kind of funny yesterday and every time I checked the MSN service status it would show "Scanning" rather than a particular radio station. Then at 11 PM last night, while the unit had been sitting still for nearly 30 minutes, I went to change screens and a message popped up to the effect of "Additional new features are available from MSN Direct. Run Web Updater to update your receiver".

I did - nothing changed. So I tried My Dashboard the 'other way' via MyGarmin.com. Nothing changed that way either. I haven't seen the message since and the traffic receiver is locked on it's usual FM frequency for my area today.

I'm beginning to think this message is pre-programmed to display every few months or so, regardless of whether or not there is actually an update. The last time it displayed, I checked and no update was available then either.

When I got that message I had my Zumo 660 plugged in.

I did the download and presto; I now have the weather maps and flight arrival times!!

No problems for a year

I had no problems for over a year. When the problem did arise, it gave me a good signal indication as well as good 'subscription active' prompt. You'd think the receiver was working but not activated. Also, you would'nt know the reset button even exists if you didn't closely scrutinize the receiver and see the fine print. When one of my co-workers, who also has the same unit, said he didn't notice it either, that's what prompted me to post this thread.
