Communicator - Snow Leopard - OSX 10.6

The Garmin Communicator is not recognized in Safari - OSX 10.6.
I am awaiting Garmin's response to see when an update is to be released.

Safari in Snow Leopard runs in 64 bit mode...

In 10.5.x, Safari runs in 32 bit mode.

But with Snow Leopard, Safari starts up in 64-bit mode, which confuses a number of add-ons.

You can set Safari to open/run in 32 bit mode, and the old add-ins work just fine. Or use Firefox.

Check out for example:

http://www.macintouch.com/

and go to their Snow Leopard forum or the compatibility list -- you'll see instructions for setting Safari to open in 32 bit mode.

(You might send this info along to Garmin -- I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't seen it.)

Leopard forgotten

I am just not happy that Apple has forgotten the non intel Mac users!

The G5 now lives in the closet...

We've been working with Snow Leopard at work for a while. I replaced my dual g5 with a quad intel box, and moved the g5 into the closet as a server.

Obsoleting old gear is always a difficult decision -- apple have been there before with the 68k (and do you remember all the troubles going from 24 bit to 32 bit clean 68k code?).

Your old g4 and g5 machines still make good servers -- it's about shoveling data around.

Thanks for the info. I

Thanks for the info. I installed SL yesterday, and had to delete my printer and then added again to get it to work.

Wait

If you have a lot of added hardware it is always best to wait awhile after an OS update to let the hardware support catch up. If it isn't broken don't fix it.

You're not forgotten, just not wanted

The last PPC Mac was made in 2006; ancient history in personal computing. Apple will probably issue security updates for Leopard for a couple of years and then will announce the end of support, just as they have done for System 8, 9, and pre-Tiger OS Xs.

At least with the Garmin software PPC users are spared the 64/32-bit hassles.

re-use, re-purpose

my wife's old G4 iBook (replaced by a macbook) is going to become a friend's e-mail and net puttering box for their mountain cabin. the old dual G5 desktop (replaced by a mac pro) moves to the closet to replace the older G4MDD as the server.

The old machines still work and still offer value!

Does other Garmin software work on Snow Leopard?

I'm still waiting for my copy of SN. Has any one tried Road Trip or any other Mac software from Garmin to see if it works?

Using Firefox instead of Safari

Or use Firefox.

That may be the best advice until Garmin updates Communicator plug-in. I assume there is still the Flip4Mac incompatability. I hope Garmin can resolve these two issues soon. In the meantime, I am using Firefox for updates.

Nothing yet....

The response from the support desk is ....

"On Snow Leopard, OS 10.6, the Garmin Communicator will not load in Safari with the default 64-bit mode.
This problem will be fixed with a new release of the Garmin Communicator, coming soon."

Older intels only start in 32 bit anyways

I assume then if you start in 32 bit mode all is well? I know my 24" iMac will only start in 32 bit mode so I should be OK if I ever get SL.

Communicator - Snow Leopard

FPichon,

I confirmed Garmin Communicator isn't recognized in Safari-OSX 10.6.
I'm running Snow Leopard on my new Mac Pro Quad-Core. However, the suite of Garman applications, Road Trip, etc., seem to run fine.

Keep on Mac'n,
Bill

Re: Communicator - Snow Leopard...

Hi Bill,

I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro and ran it for 2 days and decided to uninstall it and wait for a while, until 3rd party apps get up to speed, with the new OS. Do you know if Garmin Communicator works in Firefox, with Snow Leopard?

BTW, I absolutely loved the vast improvement in the startup time...

so far so good

I've checked for updates (web updater), updated POIs (POI loader) and sent goodies to my garmin (web communicator plugin) on Snow Leopard. I've updated both my MacPro and my MacBook.

.

I bought a new mac and it shipped with 10.6 pre-installed. I called three times to make sure it would come with 10.5. Oh well, I ordered built-to-order and the delay put me past the 10.5/10.6 change. At least I got and iPod Classic for $20.

OS X 10.6.1

Has anybody tried OS X 10.6.1? I downloaded it and it really messed-up my Mac. Couldn't access the internet and applications ran very slow. Thanks in advance.

So far no issues...

No issues with OSX 10.6.1 - I always start with a clean installation to avoid baggage from older apps and updates. Also glad to see the HP driver updates.

SL works great

Had it on 2 machines = one an early 24" iMac and the other late 2008 MacBook- for 2 weeks now. The iMac won't boot into 64 bit, the MacBook does. Both machines are working great, especially since we got the HP printers in the update.

Problems with Safari 4.0 - not just OSX 10.6

I just got my Snow Leopard DVD and haven't installed it yet, but I haven't been able to send POIs to my Nuvi since upgrading to Safari 4.

I've reinstalled the Garmin Communicator plug-in a couple times. I just have to remember to fire up Firefox when I want to talk to the GPS.

Really Annoying!

10.6.1 No problems here.

Be sure you have the latest versions PLUS no Flip4Mac

All seems to work OK if you have the latest versions of the plug-in, Safari, and 10.6.1. Also be sure to check if Flip4Mac is in either your Home>Library>Internet Plug-Ins or your Computer>Library>Internet Plug-Ins folder. Sometimes plug-ins end up getting installed in one or the other, or both over time.

If you find Flip4Mac just pull it out to the desktop, restart Safari, and then try the nüvi again.

Newest Communicator Plugin 282

I'm running OS x 10.6.1 Snow Leopard and since I have one of the first 24" iMacs, it only starts in 32 bit. So I just downloaded the newest Communicator plugin for Mac. I find it will work with Firefox and the test page recognizes the plugin but it will not work with Safari. The test page says the plugin isn't recognized. It seems from this thread some of you find it to work OK. What's the scoop. I see a reference to Flip4Mac. Are you telling me there's a conflict there? Do I have to uninstall it? Then I wonder if Communicator is worth it. This thing I downloaded said it was for Snow Leopard but what goes on? I only use Firefox for emergencies and I'm not sure this qualifies. Thanks

Hi TnPapa,

Here's a link that will help all Mac users, contemplating the upgrade to Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6).

http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/

Scroll down the page to see which applications are Snow Leopard compatible, or not. You may also need to scroll to the right, to be able to see the "status" column.

10.6.2

The 10.6.2 update came out today. I haven't tried it with my Nuvi to see if all is well. Just a heads up.

Or run your software update.

Apple plan

Apple has never given much consideration to older technology. They cut loose the floppy drive. They did that way early but you don't see floppy drives on too many new machines do you? The software that is being written will sooner or later fail to work on older machines and even if it was tweeked to work it would be way too slow. Apple wants you to upgrade and sooner or later you will be forced to unless you don't install anything new.
