Uploading POI's Procedures

I've been working for 4 hours trying to figure out what I may have done that I can't upload POI's to my Garmin 650. I'm 70 and not real good at computers, but I have uploaded POI"s in the past. I keep getting the following message - (Unable to read from the device "G:\Chapel.jpg", please verify the devise is connected and try again). The Garmin is connected. I've tried all the help information from Garmin and I'm obviusly not getting something.

Thanks for any help.

POI Loader is asking you to point to the FOLDER that contains the POI files you downloaded from POI-Factory. Sounds like you are directing the program to a picture of a chapel.

Tarheel...

It sounds as if you have downloaded the files into a folder that is ready for upload. Couple of questions -
1. You are using POILoader to load the files to the Garmin?

2. You are certain you have the latest version of POILoader.

3. When you start POI loader, it should show the Garmin device you are sending the files to. Does it show the Garmin as in G:\Nuvi?

Where are you seeing the error message -- on the computer screen or the GPS? Are you using a picture of a chapel as your splash screen on the GPS?

I downloaded the latest

I downloaded the latest revisions to the POIloader before I began. When I plug my Garmin in, it shows it as GARMIN (K:\).

The error message shows on

The error message shows on the POIloader. I haven't seen a picture of a chapel on anything on my computer. My nuvi doesn't show anything on it's screen at anytime except it's connection to the computer.

Try to delete all the POI in the Garmin. It is an option on the opening screens of POI loader.

You aren't using a MAC by any chance are you?

One of the first things I

One of the first things I did was to delete all of the POI's during the first attempt and then began trying to load all the new ones when this issue started. Not using a MAC, using Windows HP. I'm going to try deleting POI and reload it and see what happens.

I reloaded POIloader and had

I reloaded POIloader and had the same thing happened, but this time it states (unable to read from the device "G:/Mt. Moran.jpg", please verify the devise is connected and try again). Obviously I have something going on in the computer, but don't have a clue.

PoiLoader

OK Tarheel -

When you open POILoader, the second screen should show 3 save options. The first, Garmin Device should be "lit."

Clicking Next, you should see the name of the device. Verify it is the device and only the device. (You said it does, but humor me.)

Click Next again and it should ask if you want to install or remove POI. Again, the top button should be lit - install POI. The next screen is .

It starts out with the location of the Source directory (folder). Be certain it points to the folder by clicking Browse and reselecting.

The next line asks you to select distance and speed. Make the appropriate selection - normally Feet and MPH in the States.

The next line asks what settings - the default is Express (Recommended) which works unless you want to specify alert distances. I will assume you are working in the Express mode.

Clicking Next should start the transfer. If this is where you are getting your error message, then we'll dig a little deeper. You may need to do some file repair on the 650.

I agree

Is the GPS your G: drive? If not, what is the G: drive? Do the jpg's, Chapel.jpg and Mt Moran.jpg really exist; these are locations in Grand Tetons National Park. Do you have another program running? Have you re-booted the computer?

You said the Garmin is in drive K:
You need to make sure POI loader is directed to K:

I performed everything you asked in that order and when the transfer begins, that's when the message appears. After I reloaded POIloader, that is when the message changed to the second one.

After I downloaded POIloader

After I downloaded POIloader again, my nuvi now comes up as "nuvi with the serial number". I'm going to try some of the suggestions and see what happens.

Thanks to a-user my problem

Thanks to a-user my problem is solved. He sent me an email to call him and guided me through the process. Bottom line was that I had disconnected by Garmin without clicking eject and it had corrupted the process.

Thanks Bill, you saved the day!

Any Lengths

Talk about going to any length! Nice job a_user. That was certainly going above and beyond to help someone.

Don't you wish all tech support phone calls went like that!!

Well done! I'm sure Tarheel really appreciated your help.

Another example of the great people you find here at the factory.

The hardest part was diagnosing the problem

Over the phone diagnosing is hard, no doubt!

Actually you provided one of the clues when you noted the Nuvi was device K: and the error was device G:.

And to answer Tampa, I carried a toolbag for almost 20 years between performing customer service and technical support. "Look at the keys at the bottom of the front panel of the computer. Key 0 should be down, keys 1 - 8 should be up..."

And, "Is It Plugged In?"

Come on guys, a little humor please

Everybody needs a little help now and then. mrgreen

◦Tech Support: "Ok, ma'am, I need you to do a ctrl-alt-del."
◦Customer: "How do I do that?"
◦Tech Support: "Push and hold 'ctrl' and 'alt' at the same time, and then hit 'delete'."
◦Customer: "Where are those?"
◦Tech Support: (explains the location of the keys)
◦Customer: "Nothing happened."
◦Tech Support: "Try again."
◦Customer: "Still nothing."
A minute or two later....

◦Customer: "Should I turn my computer on? Would that help?"
◦Tech Support: "Yeah, it might."

When you have nothing better to do, spend some time here. razz

I have spent my time on the phone doing tech support. It simply amazes me how some people can do it and make it look so easy. My ear usually feels like a piece of cauliflower. rolleyes
