mounting solution

Just found this on another site: "I have a Garmin NUVI 350 and learned early on not to mount it by sticking it to the windshield. I found a very useful and acceptable solution was to place the mounting base in an open ashtray on my dashboard. Just open the ashtray, place the mounting base in it then close it to make it a snug fit. Reverse the precedure to remove the unit. No muss, no fuss." Mounting any of my units has been a porblem. I found the only solution has been the bean bag mount, but thought this had merit. Thanks you amon. Wish he would come to our group. I think ill invite him.

My Mounting Solution

Here are photos of my setup ... I have a 2007 Grand Caravan and am using the ProClip. It is very secure, does not affect the vents (but does sit in front of the vents), and is in a good position for both passenger and driver.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v700/Lipscombe/Car/GPS2.jp...
Snapshot of my setup

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v700/Lipscombe/Car/GPS1.jp...
A little closer. I purposely ran the wire like that For slack. The passenger can tilte the GPS towards them, and you can't see the wire when the GPS is in its place.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v700/Lipscombe/Car/GPS3.jp...
The wire runs in behind the dash to an accessory power outlet that I installed. The left side of the dash is cushy, so it is not crushing the wire.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v700/Lipscombe/Car/GPS4.jp...
And it all set up and ready to go. Easy to reach for the driver and passenger, you don't have to take your eyes too far off the road to look at it, and it causes no glare on the windshield.

mounting solution

I am using the floor mount from Mountguys and it does a great job of keeping the sun off my nuiv 350 and it keeps it out of sight. The only drawback is it's a little tight if you have a passenger.

mounting

all i got to say i keep it low and out of sight ,so what if you cant see it as well as if on the windsheild,it tells you where to go anyway.plus it keeps it out of the heat,it may be only 60 and sunny out but direct sun is a torture on any equipment!

Suction Cup mount

I mainly use a Navigon now, its Suction mount is awesome never ever drops off. The Navigon is small enough to mount the unit above the mirror with a quick detach from the mount and into my pocket. So basically
it's never in the car without me our my wife. And the mount is in the dark trim of the windshield and not seen from outside the car or a casual look into the car.

Suction Mount

I've had my Nuvi 200W for over a month now. I've yet to have a problem with the suction mount. I travel a lot and have mounted it in many renatl cars in different temperatures (hot and cold) and it hasn't fallen off.
In my personal vehicle I mount it to the tach, since I never really look at that, it doesn't matter to me the GPS is blocking it. It has a plastic window and it stays securely in place.

So I was just wondering why everyone is having problems with the suction mount?
Is the one I have different than everyone elses, being that I purchased my GPS recently? (lever type)

Mounting with the Disk...

This is what I did....
I have a new Toyota Highlander. I took the large black disk that came with my 550 and cut off about 1/3 of the disk. I left enough of the disk so the suction cup has room to mount on the disk. I purchased some double sided tape (3/8) the stuff that has some kind of foam between the sticky tape.
I put the tape around the top and sides of the vent next to the radio. This gives me a good view of the GPS.
If you try this besure the GPS won't interfer with the windshield wiper arm. Mine work fine.
When I remove the GPS unit I have a post-it-note that says "pick up laundry". The note covers the disk. Anybody looking in my car thinks I may have a bad memory...

The most stable solution I

The most stable solution I have found is the bean bag mount - hands down. It does not slide around when taking sharp corners or during hard braking. The suction mount simply does not hold up all that well. During the hot summer months in Southern California, the mount will simply lose suction.

Well, there are a few issues with a suction mount, that some people don't like:

(1) It does not stay in place for everybody all the time. I have had mine fall off the windshield after being on for over a month while travelling down the freeway. Caused a scratch to my screen (an on old Quest gps).

(2) The current Garmin mounts had (may have been corrected now) a problem where if it was left on the windshield too long, especially in warm weather, the rubber of the suction cup melted to the windshield leaving a rubber deposit on the windshield. Garmin had to send me a new mount because of that issue.

(3) Window mounts illegal in some areas.

(4) The GPS can cause quite a glare when mounted on the window or using a bean bag mount in some vehicles, especially at night.

(5) I personally like my gps to look as factory installed as possible. I don't like wires hanging around.

I have a second suction cup mount, so if I travel in another vehicle (such as a work car or rental) I can use the suction mount and battery power. Or if I need more power, I can pick up another power adapter too. I don't subscribe to FM Traffic, so I would not need one of the expensive ones. So even though I have a vent mount, I am not limited to just one vehicle.

Yeap

I can't remember how many threads we have about mounting! I just don't get it, for me the suction mount is great. The older ones would stick to the window (the infamous black ring), but the new ones are great. Cleaned my window with rubbing alcohol as well as the suction cup and it NEVER comes off. If you have issues with it coming off vasaline works great wonders.

mounting solution

I agree. I have Ford Windstar that has a pull out triangular tray with cup holders on the sides. I have found that putting the mounting base in that triangular tray is pretty satisfactory. I usually mount it to the windshield though. I have found that cleaning the windshield area and the suction portion of the base and then mounting it with the fastening clip facing down greatly reduces the unit's falling off. It stayed on the windshield for over a month without coming off, then we had a number of radical temperature changes and it fell off.

For me

asianfire wrote:

...I just don't get it, for me the suction mount is great

I am one of these people that if I am in my car, the GPS is on.

For me, it is simply that I don't like wires hanging around, I don't want the GPS to fall off the windshield when I am driving down the freeway, I don't like the glare on the windshield at night, and in my vehicle, if it is on the windshield, it is hard to reach if needed ... and my wife likes to have access to the GPS while she is a passenger as well.

Also, my vent mount is quick ... no fuss no muss ... time to install GPS when getting into car is about 1/2 second.

Aconite wrote:

That depends on the car, on mine it is very easy to reach, but I have had rentals where I had to place it high or I wouldn't be able to reach it.

Bean Bag for Sure

I use a generic bean bag mount and I think it's great. There's this one particular traffic circle (althought my Garmin insists on calling it a "roundabout")where my wife predicts I'm gonna roll the car someday. Yet the mount stays right where I put it! No sliding at all. Amazing!

I like having the GPS where I can see it easily. If I'm driving at night on a road I don't know, I like how I can get some idea of the curve(s) coming up by looking at the screen.

Beanbag rocks!

I used the supplied suction mount that came with my Garmin but the recent cold weather caused it to keep popping off the windshield. Also being mounted on the windshield I really had to lean forward to work the screen.

Reading the posts here I bought the beanbag and it rocks! Doesn't move around and I take corners a bit too quick sometimes and it is rock solid. It's also so much closer and easier to operate - much better than the suction mount in my opinion.

Dash Mount

I have a new 2008 Accord and because of the design on the int. I'm able to use the disc in an area that is not on top of the car's dash where people could see it, but on a small shelve above the heat buttons. It's right on sight for me but no one else could see it and I get great line of sight for the sats.

Hard to explain this, but it's a great location.

Great!

Great idea! Wish my lighter socket was in a good spot.

Not bad

Yes, that is a great design. Some vehicles won't be able to take advantage of that design if their power sockets are too low .... I have a Grand Caravan and the power sockets are almost ankle level. But for the vehicles that it will work with, looks like a very easy, mess free way to do it. I like it. Now ProClip or RamMount are going to steel your idea! smile

nuvi 760 mounting

i found the best way to mount my nuvi 760 in my Maxima: i used the temp. adhesive disc with the lock mounting unit, secured on top of the middle airvent flat area.

http://render1.snapfish.com/render2/is=Yup6l0n%7C%3Dup6RKKt%...

i used the flexible clear plastic (from a safty pack) and cut out long tabs including the rounded portion to give me a J-shaped clip which i wedged into the dash seams to secure the power wire in place and make it look neat
i hope this helps some of you to secure your GPS

Dash Mount

In my opinon I like My GPS up on the Dash. This way it is more eye level, because some of us may look at it for some reasons this way our eye balls are not completly taken off the road while driving.
For those whom have your GPS below eye level of the Dash, more likely to rear end some one in a split second.
I have the Dash mount GPS,weighed rubber pads, does not move at all.
I do listen to the direction voice, but I have a force of habit I find my self looking at the GPS too,not all the times, but can see the road too at the same time.
Before I got the Dash mount type had it on my windshield, but CA. does not allow it.I started putting it in my cup holder, but when I looked down, almost kissed some one's rear end of their car.
That did that got the Dash mount type,no problems now.Had dash mount 3 months now.

SAVE parts.
My new dash mount took a nose dive.Plugged it in yesterday to charge from lighter, started to make connection then GPS said lost connection on Power.
I saved my suction cup holder assy.Swaped parts, now Okay.Good thing I save electronic parts.

I think I found the perfect place. If you screw the unit to the back of the back seat (inside the trunk), you eliminate tickets for obstructing the windshield, most instances of theft, rings on dash or windshield and ugly cable clutter. True that reception could be better and audio is a bit muffled, but this thread proves that there are an infinite number of "perfect" solutions. wink

Garmin Mounting

Depending on your vehicle, the glove box door can be a perfect mounting spot. I open the door and it lays flat, so I mounted the gps on the door. When I stop I just shut the door and it's concealed. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to route the power cord, but didn't need to drill anything.

Mounting solution

I wasn't happy with the TT windshield mount, from what people were saying it would come loose in hot weather, not an ideal situation. I did some lookinig online and found Ram Mount, great product, very durable, but they don't make the right bracket for my TT go930. The next place I tried is Mount Guys

www.mountguys.com

They make a great little windshield mount for $12.98 for my TT. There are two things about their mount, the suction cup has a mechanical part to increase the mounting vacuum, so it doesn't come loose. The other thing I like about this mount...when I buy a new GPS all I have to do is order the part that attaches to the back of the GPS for about $4.00. All I'll have to do is remove the clip for the TT and replace it with the clip for the new GPS. I would recommend these people to anyone.

I'm renting a Chevy HHR this week that has a perfect solution for my c320.

In the center top of the dash, there's a shallow storage compartment.

http://www.chevrolet.com/i/pic/hhr/2007/photogallery/int_gal...

With the cover flipped up, it's just shallow enough to hold the c320 in place just by sitting it there. The compartment's cover shields the screen so there's no glare and the sun can't bake the unit. The best part is that all I have to do is power off the until, close the compartment lid, and there's no indication that there was ever a GPS in the car.

The only problem is that, since I only have the suction cup mount, I have to run the unit off of batteries. I guess if I owned this car, I'd put some more effort into how to mount this with power.

It's a very strange looking vehicle but what a really convenient place for a GPS.

Thanks cool! I just bought a Dodge Journey and it too have the same compartment. I will try to mount my Nuvi in there and see how it works.

Any one had trouble finding the right beanbag?

The first two beanbags we bought were from Amazon. From the descriptions, "for Nuvi", it looked like they'd work but found out they were only made for early models. Finaly (you'd think I'd check after the first one didn't work) went to the Garmin site, found the specific model needed, and ordered. Hopefully this one will be OK.

marnoldi,

That's a cool idea, in theory. But consider this: I bought my car used a couple years ago, and it came with a gash in the console right under the stereo controls. I think it's a leftover from one of these mounts (it's in the gap between the molding and console).
