A police officer's perspective on red light cameras

One interesting point I extrapolated from the below article was that as a consequence of fewer traffic stops due to red light running, it would be somewhat easier to get away with DUI.

Yep, if they're sober enough

Yep, if they're sober enough to read the GPS and respond accordingly.

Chicago already has the

Chicago already has the highest sales tax in the US. It also has the highest price of gasoline in the US. Soon it will have the highest number of cameras of any city in the US.

After 35 years as a Chicago Police Officer, I've had enough and on July 6th I'll become a resident of Tennessee.

Thats funny

We dont have any Red Light cameras yet here. Tennessee. I hear its a nice place where life is slower. Alot of horses. Good for you. Enjoy the new location. Really.

I don't think there is any better time than now to leave the CPD!! You get no respect, and worse, no support from the city.

Thanks for protecting us for the past 35 years!!!

No. They'll get a ticket or three if they run lights. But they won't be charged for driving under the influence.

That's because simply taking a picture of the offender isn't going to prove his Blood Alcohol level or whether he was weaving all over the place.

That requires a live human being.

A high blood alcohol level will show up in the hospital emergency room.

thoughts

Personally, I don't want to get a ticket and try not to run lights. I am a bit nervous when I am the last car to go through a yellow where there is a camera. But I have never gotten a ticket yet.

I got pulled over for speeding more than double the speed limit, which was 25. The officer was nice, and even told me to go to court. He said this three times and so I did. Instead of 5 pts., they gave me 0 points, and reduced the fine by $57. A red light camera cannot do that. So there are pros and cons of each.

In the former, the outcome could have been a 40% surcharge to insurance, which has far reaching consequences as the entire family suffers. With a red light camera, there is no possibility of an insurance surcharge.

The long story short is we have these measures in place because we are a society with rules. I sped but not because I am a bad person, I was in a hurry. No excuse, but that's what happened. Had not been pulled over in over 10 years so it was a wake-up call.

NYC..tons of Red Light camera already..

I was born raised NYC. Still love the city to a degree but moved out to live in Florida seven years ago on Government job transfer.

Anyway, two years ago I buy my first GPS then later I find this website upgrade it with POI's including the subscribed portion for red light camera's. I thought nothing of it. I'm a long distance driver and go back to NYC to attend a special family event.

Of course, I got my GPS in tow but as soon as I crossed the George Washington Bridge into NYC...BAM ! Almost every corner in Manhattan has a camera. I was going to Queens. Worse..LOL ! Even more and my GPS was literally lighting up like a christmas tree warning me where all the cameras were.

Sooo...if you think Chicago is bad, try driving in the NYC area and you will see what I mean.

Chicago is not the only city being hard up looking for more revenue. The present Mayor of New York City has already driven out 75% of the major corporations because of that fact despite how high he can jump so they can stay. Being greedy will eventually take its toll.

Happy safety Driving ! cool
