Nuvi 765 locked up with black screen

I was driving home today and heard a beep. I looked up and saw that the message on the screen said something like GPS updated. I pressed ok, and it went about searching for satalites. It then poped up again GPS updated. I pressed ok once again and left it alone. The screen then went black and that's all it does now. It sits there as if turned off and will not come back up. resettling it back into it's cradle does nothing. Taking it home and hooking the USB from the computer to it does nothing. I have even tried holding the power slide to the left for 20 seconds to try to reset the device (on power with USB and off) and that seems to do nothing either. Help...

Change them back or you will get a false "GPS chipset Type M update available" message from WebUpdater. There has been NO GPS Chipset update for months now. If you see WebUpdater reporting it, you know why.

Thanks man I was guessing that would be the case.

Hereeeeeeee I go. BTW, I left mine down after reading about this here!!

Maybe not really strange - probably when the screen went black it was not really off.

so maybe this will help others

After disconnect battery and reconnect if it does not turn back on battery probbaly dead. either connect it to computer or put on charging craddle for bit to charge battery then do update. You do not want to do with dead battery as after you update you need to unplug so update can be installed on Nuvi.

Hope this helps! I'm sure if you send in all tehy will do is disconnect battery reconnect and install update. I'm in Illinois suburbs of Chicago if anyone needs help!

Seems to have worked

No error messages aquired the satellites like now, in the house. Will take a long rde tomorrow to verify!

My 885T died today

Spoke to Garmin and they stated that a patch is being worked on for the 885T.
It will not be ready until next Monday or Tuesday, now I have to sit and watch a non-working unit for I hope a few days.
Anyone has any ideas of how to turn it sideways to make it function as a coaster for my cold drink at least until the patch is done?
I would attempt the update patch that is being touted in this string, but it is stated for the 700 series units.
Any suggestions?
It seems that persons on this board have more abilities than those at Garmin in getting things done promptly.

Another Dead Garmin 785T

While using my Garmin tonight on the road, I experienced the "GPS Update" problem, kept telling me it was complete. After I restarted it, it wouldn't come on. When I returned home an hour later, I had an email from Garmin recommending a critical software update to fix an issue with the firmware! Just a few hours too late, now I have to send in the unit...again! Did I mention this was my 3rd 785T unit since January 2010? Looks like #4 will be on it way soon.

My died today too...and is alive again!!!

My 765t died today coplely too. I opened gps disconnected battery for 15 sec. reconnected, plugged to USB on my computer, started web updater, downloaded udate to ver. 3.6, unplugged, waited untill GPS updated itself and voila!!! it works again and even better than before, because I noticed the screen respond is more accurate. It took me 20 minutes and I am in business again!!!

Pulled harder on back cover

I opened up my 765 with the smallest flathead screwdriver in my jeweler's set (I think it's the same one I use to tighten up my sunglasses with). Unplugged the battery for a few seconds. Closed it back up. Plugged it into the pc and ran web updater. There's nothing wrong with it now. Garmin lost some major points with me over the last few days. I'm on vacation right now.

I really don't think Garmin can approve (or ever will) a procedure to instruct users how to open the unit for what is, yes, a very simple procedure. Doing so would be instructing users how to void their own warranty no matter how simple it is (or isn't)

Torx Size?

What size of Torx driver did you use for the 785T? I saw the UTube video using a T-4 and someone else posted here using a T-5. I guess I could take the Garmin with me when I go.

no more chance for GARMIN!!!

luckily mine never updated.

luckily mine never updated. but starting two days ago the satellite reception was very flaky. working for a minute then losing it. I had to restart it to work for a another minute before stopping. then after rebooting, it wouldn't start. this was on battery btw, off the cradle. fortunately after hooking it to the pc, it was detected and turned back on. i did the update and now it seems to be functioning correctly..will try it again tomorrow.

I did it too

I was going to take it to Battery Plus to have them pull the battery connection for me. I decided instead I could probably do it. Now I'm no tool guy and I'm clumsy as heck. But it was really rather easy. I go the #5 driver from Home Depot and used my thumb nail to split open the case.

I was easily able to disconnect the battery cable and counted slowly to 20. Hooked it back up and snapped the halves back together. (Actually that took a little patentice but it snapped tight finally)

Hooked up the usb cable and it went right to the normal computer hook up. Launched the updater and wooo hooo it worked. grin

I hope this is the fix that Garmin would have done and that this fixes it for good. But at least I got it to restart and acquire the sats. and most importantly I didn't breake it. I hooked up in the truck and took it for a spin. So far so good!

OH BTW it was a complete brick due to this problem before I did this.

Hated products.

Possible fix for some problems

Just received this from garmin - it may help some if these problems.

Mandatory Software Update

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, Garmin released a free, mandatory GPS software update to correct a software issue that has been discovered to cause the nuvi 7x5 devices to repeatedly attempt to update GPS firmware, and then either shut down or no longer acquire GPS satellite signals.

Garmin nüvi 7x5 series products that are no longer able to acquire a GPS satellite signal may download a firmware update immediately that will correct the software issue. This firmware update may be downloaded using Garmin's WebUpdater program.

Garmin nüvi 7x5 customers who are no longer able to power on their GPS device will need to visit www.garmin.com/support, and select the first FAQ titled "My nüvi 755T, 765T, 775T or 785T is giving me the message 'Updating GPS Firmware' or will no longer power on..." Customers will then need to follow the instructions to request a return authorization so that the device may be repaired under warranty.

We know our customers rely upon their Garmin GPS device(s), especially during the summer travel season, and we regret any inconvenience this situation may have caused. We are committed to developing products that are known for their quality and reliability and will continue to work diligently to earn the trust of our customers.

Garmin Announcement 7X5

As of 6-25 Garmin has publicly announced an upgrade to this problem. New units will have the new software which solves past problems.

Any Electronic Retail Employees Here?

Do we have any electronic retail employees in the house? I'm curious if Garmin will be pulling all current stock from retailers so they can update the firmware. Or will Garmin let unsuspecting customers purchase a unit which contains the "bad" 3.5 firmware?

.

I don't think Garmin has NIB units with v3.40 on them. I think they may all be under v3.0 and likely the initial v2.3. This assumption is based on a few posts made recently where defective units (not due to the 3.4 brick syndrome) were replaced by new units direct from Garmin which came with the initial v2.30 installed. But these units may have been "old stock".

I have also heard of one user receiving a NIB Garmin direct unit with v3.5 (3.5...not a typo, likely a Garmin internal firmware release) on it which had no brick syndrome at all after the brick date passed.

Fix it Yourself!!!!

Don't settle for a re-furb unit and don't pay for shipping. I just unplugged and plugged in my battery and then did the update. It is not difficult at all and there is no warranty seal to worry about.

I had already ordered a new GPS for my trip on Monday, and after paying next day air to have it here tomorrow I am stuck with it.

I think I will keep it as a backup though as this crap with Garmin is getting to be too common.

I was wondering what would have happened if I had the lifetime map updates? This self fix would solve that as well.

Got my email from Garmin

I email garmin Wednesday morning and got a respose Thursday morning.
"Please send only the nüvi 7x5 device in. We will not need any power cables, mounts or accessories like SD cards. Again, please remove them before sending your device in to the address above.

We know our customers rely upon their GPS device daily and we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. We are working diligently to fix this issue. Please expect a turnaround time of ten to fourteen business days after we receive your device.” "

10 to 14 days. Yikes. I have to spend the money to sent it. Good thing I have fix it Yesterday after the patch 3.6 was released. Garmin, I'm disappointed. You provide the step by step instruction on how to do the easy fix(with little technical know how). Thanks to POI factory. Someone suggested remove the battery. Which work for me. then reboot intsall 3.6 version software

THANKS GARMIN! for the late response. I travel from Tulsa, OK back to St. Louis, MO. without my trusted GPS. Good thing I bring a road atlas map

RE: Torx Size?

Could be either a T5 or T4 depending...

Most of those small size economy/budget Torx sets they sell are manufactured to terrible tolerences and in one set a T4 might fit and in another set it might take a T5. They sell a set in Home Depot for about $5 that isn't bad quality for the price. I believe the screws in the Nuvi are actually T5's

Those small screws Torx screws in a Nuvi are not very tight and are just screwed into plastic and you can usually even get them out with any small regular "snug fitting" jewelers screwdriver or one from an eyeglas repair kit.

We ain't talking rocket science here...

Garmin is apparently out of stock on 7x5's...

Word is out that Garmin is apparently out of stock on 7x5's to ship out if you sent your bricked unit to them for replacement. They will likely be repairing the same unit you sent them rather than sending a replacement.

Source: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=127184...

I think this is a first for Garmin...not enough stock (new & refurb) for the literally thousands of exchanges. So now they will actually *repair* (not send a refurb) your unit which will involve exactly what others have been doing with their bricked 7x5's. That is, open the case, unplug the battery, plug it back in and flash v3.60 to the unit.

T-5 Torx for 785T

Mine was a T-5 Torx from Sears for $3.99. Worked like a champ, glad I do not have to send it in (would have been $4.00 for USPS Small Flat Rte Box). When I originally spoke to the Garmin rep about sending in my unit, I was told that my unit was to be repaired and returned, not exchanged for a refurb unit. I think the fix is simple enough that it makes sense that Garmin would just fix and return your own unit.

Anyway, mine is working great after the new software update was installed.

thanks guys

disconnect worked, no sending unit back. made a tool to git the screws by filing down a small flathead to the size that fit. appreciate it.

are transferred if they send you a different unit. You do have to call to have them do it. but the question is...the 7x5 series units are still under warranty, why buy a new one?

I also didn't pay for shipping, they sent me a UPS call tag via email...off it went.

I fixed my 765T too. I bought Torx T5 and opened the case and disconnected wires from the board for few seconds. Tried power on and it worked. SO I powered it off and connected to my PC and did the firmware upgrade to version 3.60. Everything looks fine now.

Passed Away Last Tuesday Night. RIP 765t

765t departed this world last Tuesday night. Called the Nuvi doctor Wednesday morning. 25 minute wait. Doc gave me an RMA and an apology. Boxed it up and mailed it back to the maker Thursday morning.

Accidents happen. Garmin was very nice and took care of the problem in minutes. Nice recovery Garmin.
Garmin continues to have a good track record making things right. Well done!

Service

While sometimes some of the updates cause new problems, Garmin does a great job of standing behind their products and will try to fix things with the next update. Nice to hear they stood behind yours...

Fixed Firmware aka Software Update

As most of us had the same problem with the “GPS Update Complete” I kept my gps home a few days and received an email from Garmin “Free mandatory Garmin GPS software update for nuvi 7x5”. The update firmware fixed the problem. I’m glad to see there responsible enough to email those that registered and correct the problem.

Update

I turned on my Nuvi 765WT the other morning and the first thing that came up was the dreaded "GPS Updated". I turned it off and went right away to my computer and updated the firm ware. It booted up with no problem and not a problem in the last several days.

Update

Since I am going on vacation Wed and did not want to wait on Garmin to "get around" to mine, I tried the battery thing that was posted.

I removed the cover by taking out the small T5 screws, then pryed the cover apart, then unhooked the battery wire from the unit. Waited 10 seconds to make sure all was discharged and pluged it back in. The unit finally came on. I then pluged it into the PC USB, already had Web Updater up and running, clicked Find Device", and then did the update. 4 days now and no problems!

Nuvi 765 locked up with black screen

Update on my 765t that I sent in last week.

I just got a note from Garmin saying that they won't be able to ship me a new unit until late July or early August. I realize that they got hit with many, many people returning their 7xt's for the same problem but having to wait a month for a replacement due to a problem that wasn't our fault just isn't acceptable. Someone on their end should have been a little more prepared when they realized the magnitude of the problem. rolleyes

This could not have happened at a worse time.

(Summer traveling season.) If Garmin cannot ship replacement units until august, there will be a lot fo unhappy owners. Seems like the 765T has been having many problems even since its debut.

What went wrong?

Do we know about what happened when 7x5 series went down? What Garmin did that triggered this disaster?

C330 update

I have an old C330 that hasn't had a map update since I got my 250W. It nags me to get a new map from time to time so Garmin can do just about anything until they get caught. This software code has to be in the unit or downloaded as an update. Nothing comes down from the sky.
