Nuvi 765 locked up with black screen

I was driving home today and heard a beep. I looked up and saw that the message on the screen said something like GPS updated. I pressed ok, and it went about searching for satalites. It then poped up again GPS updated. I pressed ok once again and left it alone. The screen then went black and that's all it does now. It sits there as if turned off and will not come back up. resettling it back into it's cradle does nothing. Taking it home and hooking the USB from the computer to it does nothing. I have even tried holding the power slide to the left for 20 seconds to try to reset the device (on power with USB and off) and that seems to do nothing either. Help...

Nuvi 765 locked up with black screen

I had pretty much the same thing happen and called Garmin this morning also. I talked to one of their tech support folks after a lengthy wait (the rep said they were training additional staff to hopefully be working soon and cut down that wait time) who said that they have been getting many, many calls from other Garmin owners having the same or a similar problem as mine and for me to send mine in for an exchange for a new replacement unit. They have been able to also duplicate the problem on some of their own in-house units so maybe there is a software issue going on. The person I was working with was even kind enough to cover the 1 day shipping charge back to me for free so that I will have my unit for a trip I'm taking the week of July 6th.

My Nuvi 785T Died Today

I was driving and my GPS lost it signal. I though that was strange I turned it off and back on and it was fine. 30 min later a screen popped up saying my 2010.1 map update was more than a year old, very strange. I just updated last month. I parked my when I returned and turned the car on my GPS did not power up. Checked all the cables and everything and still nothing. I held the power button for awhile and still no power. I connected it to the computer and nothing not even recognized. It's dead, and of course this had to happened 3 days before my road trip. Tomorrow I will call Garmin.

another update...

I have backdated to v2.50 and the unit seems to be holding sat lock very well with no total loss of reception as with v3.40. I have NOT yet driven with the unit so I cannot say for certain if this fixes the issue. I have only run on my test bed indoors so far (yes, I get fine reception indoors). It does -seem- like it did though.

Another point I thought I'd make...I am currently running firmware v2.50. Running WebUpdater under v2.50 informs me that NO additional firmware update is available. This tells me that Garmin did the right thing and pulled the firmware so WebUpdater would not detect/install v3.40. As far as the other versions go, I do not know since I'm staying at v2.50 and don't feel like screwing with this any longer. I DO have direct links to all firmware updates (in region file format) and they are all still live. It's only the firmware supplied when running WebUpdater that has been disabled. This is a good thing and I expected Garmin would do this to prevent further damage to replacement units that are sent out.

EDIT: myDashboard from myGarmin.com has also disabled firmware updates as well as WebUpdater.

Now we wait for the fix...some are lucky and wait with a still operable unit (I'm lucky) and some wait for a replacement unit as well as a firmware fix.

Happen to my 785t

I was on my home from Tulsa, OK. Playing the Gps on June 23 morning. It went dead complete. Good thing it happen on my last leg of my road trip. And bring a AAA road atlas as backup. On June 22, twice it said acquiring satellites near Oklahoma City. I just reset it until the morning of June 23. When Gps died so are my mp3 music. I had to relied on FM radio. Why garmin? Why?

765t won't power on. Unit

765t won't power on. Unit doesn't show up when connected to pc. Through no fault of mine Garmin has bricked my gps.

.

Update:

Backdating to v2.50 does NOT fix the issue.
EDIT 1: I may have been wrong...see EDIT 2 below.

I drove in to work (10 minute drive) running firmware v2.50 and the unit is *still* losing total sat lock within 2-3 minutes of movement. I lost sat lock 2-3 times in the 10 minute drive. On the test bed in the house with good GPS signal strength and no movement, the unit is fine. Seems as though actual movement is what triggers the total sat lock loss issue.

This now leads me to believe that the issue is not solely related to the v3.40 firmware but to the GPS chipset firmware (which was being "updated" for everyone) or the v3.4 firmware borking the GPS chipset firmware. This thing is useless now if I have to keep power-cycling the unit every two-three minutes.

It's a good thing I have my 760 as a backup. Garmin has a BIG problem on their hands here with theoretically ALL 7x5 series users being affected.

EDIT 2:

Grasping at straws, I did a "clear all user data" (press & hold bottom-right corner of screen while powering unit on) still running v2.50 and went for a 30 minute drive, just roaming around town waiting to see how long it took for the sats signal to take a dump...well, the unit was rock solid throughout. I even removed the unit from the cradle once, then reinstalled it & powered on with zero issues.

It may be a solution, it may not be. Since I drive only 10 minutes to work each way, I have to do extra drive time to test. Drive-time will tell.

Called Garmin This Morning

I called Garmin this morning and got through to a rep in 15 min he gave me an RMA number and I sent mine in with the box and all accessories. He said I will be receiving a brand new unit and they seem to be working fine but well see. By the time I receive the new unit there will probably be a fix anyway, and people say one is coming out today, so I will update it as soon as I get it.

Mine is working.

My 760 is working just fine.

I was feeling left out. sad

Nuvi 7X5 units dying

The only way to fix this, without sending it in, is to crack the case open, remove the battery, then hook it back up.

Once you have done this, you will need to run the web updater...if you dare.

Garmin's QA has gone downhill, and the new updates are iffy at best.

Of course you may think I am bitter because I was laid off, but that is not the case, just trying to help.

Good luck!

My 765t bricked today...

Good thing I still have the 750 back-up... Awaiting my RMA & instructions after filling out the support web form.

My 885T died today

After just glancing at this post, I went to pick up someone; Turned on my Nuvi and nothing.
Tried to wait for approx. 10 mins, still no satellite acquired.
Tried everything, but no luck.
My 885T died, can't plat any music, can't use the voice activation....
Now I guess I have to wait in the valley of time for Garmin to advise me what to do.
Pray for me...

Have you tried removing the battery from the unit? This actually shuts the unit down and resets it.

I used my 885T yesterday and twice today and have had nothing abnormal of any kind occur. It is finding the sats very quick as always.

Try removing your battery for a minute and then see what happens.

765T - Called Garmin...

I called Garmin first thing this morning when they opened and had a 35 minute wait, which wasn't too bad compared to some. Spoke to a Customer Service Tech. and he said they are "overwhelmed by the number of calls about this problem". I could also hear the other customer reps in the background talking with customers about the very same thing.

He said he could not guarantee that the refurbished unit they will send me back will be free of the problem software, so he advised that I first hook up the unit to the computer and run the "My Garmin" account to update the serial number for the new unit on the account and then run Web Updater to install the new (hopefully) patched software before letting it acquire satalites.

One thing that got me irritated was that they (he) would not budge on them picking up the cost of sending the GPS back to them, or an expedited shipping return to me (since I'm taking a trip next week and really needed this unit) even though it's their screw-up. Other people in these posts stated that the Customer Reps they spoke to helped them out on the return costs and the expidited shipping back to them. There should be an even policy (like picking up some of the cost) across the board at Garmin for people having to return these units because of something that is not our fault, and not just at the whim of the Service Rep. you happen to get on the phone. So $18.97 later I may have it back in a couple of weeks. I just hope the unit I get in return will work as good as the one I sent them (when it worked!).

As I see it, Garmin makes several mistakes:

1) The obvious... they screw up a lot of 7x5 GPS units

2) They'll replace your non refurb GPS unit with a refurb unit

3) They refuse to pay for their mistakes

Yep,

Yep, exactly. And this is a biggie! I was thinking about how I could write to the CEO or something just to vent. Garmin is complaining about loosing profits and market share, and they are going to be loosing even more if people who are tired of the problems with their units and their policies start buying Tom Tom's or Magellans instead. Word of mouth is very powerful.

You would have thought they would have learned from the mistakes with the 7X0 fiasco when they messed up all those units with a bad firmware update. Crazy.

good to hear

they came up with a fix so quick!!!

call garmin they will replace

i had the same issue, call garmin support, they sent an UPS label and RMA, they will replace the unit.

They should send me a new

They should send me a new (not refurb) unit. I'll put my brick in the box and attach the prepaid return shipping label they included. Anything short of this is poor business by Garmin (who is liable).

Change them back or you will get a false "GPS chipset Type M update available" message from WebUpdater. There has been NO GPS Chipset update for months now. If you see WebUpdater reporting it, you know why.
