Nuvi 785t new firm ware "bricked" device

I recently updated my 785t with the latest Garmin webupdater. the next time i connected with MSN and driving, the alert kept cycling, "updating firmware... press ok".. and then would lose signal. I kept having to re-boot. Last night, it would not power back on.

Garmin has issued an immediate recall of the affected units, they sent out UPS ticket and they are replacing.

If you have a 785t, DON'T update with the current updates!!!

PS: Check the release date of any firmware update

Garmin was supposed to have released a fix for this - so if you're unit is not bricked - check before you try an upgrade... and check the other thread for reports from folks that may have done the upgrade.

Check to see what version you have - if it's 3.6 - you're more fortunate than I am.

3.6 version

Mine was brick last June 23, 2009 morning while I was in Tulsa, OK on my way back St. Louis, MO. I reset the unit by removing the battery connector at the back and waited for 5 sec and reattach it. Suggested on the other thread. It will keep doing acquire satellite until you do webupdater. So far after I did this, I tested my msn lifetime subscription. So far no problem

Bricked

I updated Nuvi 785T a while ago and today when I powered it on (I use it everyday) it popped up with a window stating "UPDATE COMPLETE", when I hit the OK button, it powered down and will not power on or soft reboot. I hope Garmin is quick with these recall replacements. I wonder how many of these units have been affected. It's almost like a virus. Of course, Garmin was closed by the time I got back to call. sad

3.6 version

Garmin release the 3.6 version this afternoon. If you have precision torks driver(star shape screw). remove the 2 screw. pop up the cover one lock at top. two at each side. After removing the cover, carefully remove the cover. You will see the battery attach at the back. remove the pin connector and wait for 5 sec, reattach. test the unit If will turn on. If it turn on, It will show on the acquiring satellite. Turn it off, Attach the cover and screw. Attach your USB cable from your computer Run your webupdater from garmin and update to 3.6 version. Work for me. Good luck!

Battery Disconnect

Thanks for the info on how to disconnect the battery and how to then update. I think I am going to do this instead of sending the unit in.

Has anyone not been able to restart the unit after doing the battery disconnect?

I am such a screw up with tools in my hand I am thinking of going to Battery Plus and have them do it. rolleyes

Nuvi1 785T BRICKED

gwapaval,

You're a saint. The unplugging of the battery worked and I was able to do the update. Will see if the update fixes the problem. Thanks again...

battery?

how did you reconnect the battery? isn't that whole thing sealed?

Battery

After you unscrew the two small (tiny)star screws, gently unsnap the back cover. The battery is sealed against the back cover but the wire is plugged into the main board (Black/red wires with white plug). It easily pulls out and slides in. Took me about 1 minute
to to pull apart and put back together. The hardest part is finding the right sized tool. I work at a fire station and the only tool I could find that worked was a extremely small Philips head that we use to open up our hand held radios for repair. Use caution not to strip the star shape of the screw.

Messed updates

Looks like many of the software updates coming from Garmin are messed up. What is going on with them?
