TomTom Comes to IPhone

I wonder if that app will work with iPod Touch?

No

IPod Touch does not have a GPS receiver

Hardware is not added like a App

Not yet, maybe so.
But unless you buy a new touch, todays don't have a GPSr built in them.

The Iphones had the hardware, so they could later add the gps app.

TomTom's iPhone website

See:

http://iphone.tomtom.com/

Not a lot on the page yet. You can sign up for more information. Also check out the short video. You'll have to look fast to see it demonstrate navigation. The iPhone holder looks like a good idea for making the iPhone work as an in-car GPSr.

Re: TomTom Comes to IPhone

Now they only need to allow tethering and I'll consider getting one.

Krieger.

I would consider the TT for

I would consider the TT for my iPhone 3GS, but I had such a bad experience using a TT Plus for my road trips that I'm hesitant. My Garmin has been better in terms of nav accuracy, but the UI has a lot to aspire to. So many choices, so little excellence.

I am a Garmin fan

I cant wait for this to come out. I just got an iPhone to carry less while I travel via the air. Now I think the could eliminate wires in the car as well.

I hope that it works as good as the Garmin 265T does.

I don't understand why apple

I don't understand why apple choose shitty companies to partner with.

1st they chose AT@T with tons of complains of bad services, and now TT.

TomTom Comes to IPhone

I can understand your frustration. I suspect that since Garmin intends to offer the Nuvifone, which will be a competitor to the iPhone, that Tom Tom would be a logical choice. Not my choice mind you, but all things considered, who else? Mio announced the Explora K75 http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/20/mio-explora-k75-gps... I suppose Magellan could be another possible choice.

TT Plus for road trips

what problems do the tomtom plus have road trips? with All the fun the garmins are having what should a person pick for a gps?

mark

Doesn't look exactly like a patnership to me,but interesting!

Hardware & software addition to the Iphone, working around the built in GPS. Thus avoiding the Iphone complex sofware that buries the gps so deep that it can't stand alone and needs a data link to operate.

If your a Iphone user, I would be thankful for TomTom and pray apple doesn't throw a net over the external GPS and require a Data link for it also, so it can actually be a stand alone GPS while in the TomTom cradle.

Just think of GARMIN's reliability lately exspecially 7x5 Nuvis

The I PHONE just cannot afford to go the way as GARMIN lately, they want deliver quality and reliable gadget to the customer... that's why!!!

Does anyone know if they

Does anyone know if they plan to allow people to have the Downloaded maps on the iPhone, or will it be something similar to how GarminXT or other GPS apps are on the blackberry, where maps are downloaded via a data connection as you drive.

GPS apps must use own maps

Apple requires developers who create GPS turn-by-turn applications to use their own licensed maps (not the Google maps app built-in to the iPhone). These maps may be either downloaded or accessed via the network. Downloaded is obviously better for performance and no risk of dead zones. They also take up a lot of room which could be an issue if you have lots of music and other apps already on the phone.

Some apps now available are using the FreeMap open source collection of maps. Be cautious with such apps as the the open source maps are several years out of date.

Relying on AT&T data for maps is futile

Ha ha, with AT&T? I can imagine taking road trips where the only time I have GPS is in major metro areas where AT&T data access actually works (somewhat), and not having it otherwise because I have only 1 bar on AT&T's crippled EDGE.

The TomTom maps will reside on the iPhone. They've already said that.

iphone App & Maps

The TT app & maps for iphone were released on 8/17.

Review

Here is a review of the Tom Tom app, only thing missing is the car kit since it is not out yet. They point out that even with a GPS app it is still a phone and has limits not found with a a dedicated unit

Quote from the article:

IQ Routes calculates the fastest route available, based on the experiences of TomTom drivers, the company says, helping drivers "reach their destination up to 35 percent of the time."

Only 35% accuracy? I could do better than that with a paper map and dead reckoning! grin

I think they meant to say "up to 35% less time".

Phone based navigation

There are pluses and minuses to a combined phone/navigation unit. I've used TomTom Navigator on my Palm Treo for many years and like the convenience of always having a navigator with me. I actually just returned a Garmin stand alone because I couldn't get used to how it handles custom POIs (Tour Guides). Since I kept leaving it behind and ended up using my phone instead I decided to hold out until I could get a TomTom phone unit. At the moment I'm between switching to AT&T (to get an Iphone) or waiting until something comes out for the Palm Pre.

I think the biggest issue with TomTom's Iphone app is the lack of street names in the turn directions. Over the years, I've gotten used to looking for the street name on the screen but it was nice having spoken names on the Garmin. Also, I'd like to know how well incoming calls are managed during navigation. It took quite a while to TT to work that out on the Treo.

Navigon for iPhone

I decided against the Tom Tom app for iPhone (I had a Tom Tom Go Plus that mostly sucked). I got the Navigon AG iPhone app instead. It's on sale for 69.99 until the end of today (Aug. 31). So far I like it. It's replacing my Nuvi 760 (2nd one actually) that has been nothing but a source of problems and frustration.

iPod Touch and GPS

I am eagerly awaiting the new update for the iTouch that should be out in either September or Octber. Hopefully, on September 9th.
