Notification of red light cameras

Hey everyone
I have a question about how your location notifies you of red light cameras. Here in Austin they have signs posted at the intersections that the intersection is monitored by an red light camera. Does every local do this or is just Austin?

Not all Redlight Cameras are marked with signs.

In Knoxville, TN there are no signs noting the redlight cameras. Also in Cleveland, TN and the rlc's that I encountered in Denver, CO there were no signs. When I was in Memphis (Germantown), TN, the rlc's had signs posted at the intersections. The RLC POI file is an invaluable resource for warnings about the rlc's.

Los Angeles area

My experience in the Los Angeles area is that streets leading to the monitored intersection has signs referring to "Photo Enforcement" or similar verbiage.

Ontario Canada has signs

Ontario Canada has signs posted of red light cameras

There are signs in SOCAL

So far, at least in Riverside and San Berardino counties, there has always been a sign about 400 feet before you get to the red light camera. It is a rather large sign with a picture of a traffic light (red , yellow , and gree) with the inscriptyion " Red light camera enforced"

Maryland and Delaware Do

Of those I've seen in Maryland and in Delaware, there have been road signs warning of cameras at the upcoming intersection with a red light camera.

In Phoenix, all red light

In Phoenix, all red light and speed camera locations give you about a 200 foot warning, enough to stop or slow down.

Cleveland Ohio

At each site of a red light or fixed speed camera, the Director of Public Service shall cause signs to be posted to apprise ordinarily observant motorists that they are approaching an area where an automated camera is monitoring for red light or speed violators. Mobile speed units shall be plainly marked vehicles.

St. Louis Area

There are susposed to be signs posted, but at the speed they have been adding the camera's in some communities the signs appear after the camera's have been installed....

State Requirements

Robin,

Many (maybe most) states require some notice be given to drivers that they're entering a monitored zone. In California most cities post a sign just ahead of the monitored intersection. Some, it seems, cover themselves with signs on access roads to the community warning that radar/photo cameras may be in use ahead.

In Arizona where I'm currently living there are fairly large yellow advisory signs, usually several hundred feet ahead of the photo trap. I've noticed though that some of the mobile enforcement vans put the sign pretty close to the van itself....I.E. you're hosed if speeding unless you're on the lookout specifically for a yellow sign ahead.

The major problem is with so many signs advising of so many things the warnings tend to blend into the background.

I'm in Austin also; the one

I'm in Austin also; the one at 290/Mopac has a sign, but I didn't see one at the Mopac/Wells Branch intersection. I was about to post about this as well, but a search brought up your post, so back form the dead it is...

It seems like signs ought to be required. There's nothing wrong with encouraging people to not run red lights; omitting signs is a surefire way of saying "We don't care as much about reducing red light running as we care about generating revenue from tickets".

Long Island, New York

Long Island, New York has two counties, Nassau and Suffolk. Nassau has small signs before the camera and posts all locations on the county website. All locations are up-to-date at POI Factory. Suffolk does everything secretly. This is a new program and I don't know whether they have any cameras up and running. One is now in the database.

NYC

They want to dig your buck$$ out of your pocket. That's why they don't post any signs here.

Signs Warning Of Speed/Red Light Cameras

In the DC, MD, VA area they don't post a warning sign at each camera. They generally put warning signs up at community borders and here and there warning of electronic enforcement. But not at each camera.

Hmmmm....

Gee, if Speed Cameras and Red-light Cameras are all about safety, wouldn't they WANT people to know they're there so you'll modify you driving???
