Footprints on the Moon

We were discussing using GPS on the space shuttle in another thread and it got me thinking...
Are there any current photos of the footprints left on the moon?

Almost a year

Next week will make one year here on this forum. Its been fun.

"Current" Photos

Depends on your definition of "current." The last manned lunar landing was in 1972 - 37 years ago.

why on earth? would you think it would be current

SilverSableGPS wrote:

First of all they are almost 40 years old, so forget current, then everything being proportionate I doubt even Hubble could focus on them.

1 radian = 229183 arcsec.
Distance to moon = 384,403,000 meters.
Width of Apollo lunar module (LM) 4.2 meters.
Angular size of LM from Earth = .000,000,011 radian = 0.002,52 arcsec. so lets forget the foot prints. Resolution of Hubble Space Telescope = .1 arcsec. So the LM is 40 times too small to be seen by Hubble, even if Hubble could focus that close. Ground based telescopes have poorer resolution than Hubble.

It would take about a million power to clearly see the junk we left on the moon. And probably not foot prints at that. even though there are tweleve distinct sets on the surface

During the flight of Apollo 17, Commander Eugene Cernan and Astronaut Harrison H. (Jack) Schmitt (lunar module pilot) where the last men to have set foot on an astronomical object other than the Earth (our Moon).

On this mission The last man to exit the Lunar lander (Challenger) and put his foot prints on the surface of the moon was Harrison Schmitt.
On December 14th 1974 Commander Eugene Cernan Stepped off the moon surface and on to the Challengers ladder being the last man ever to set foot on the Moon's, so his footprints are the most current.

Cernan was the commander of Apollo 17, the last mission to the moon, and he so far remains the last person to be on the lunar surface.

Captain Cernan has logged 566 hours and 15 minutes in space-of which more than 73 hours were spent on the surface of the moon.

On a side Note:
the foot prints would have been totaly different if Gus Grissom had not been Killed on a Launch pad Fire, Virgil "Gus" Grissom - According to Deke Slayton, who assigned crews to flights during most of Apollo, Grissom would have been his choice to be the first to walk on the moon,an not Neil Armstrong.

Wisconsin Weather

Time to weed the garden.

Weed the garden? I still have to plant it!
And mow the lawn.....again. It's growing like wildfire this year with all the rain we've been having.

'55 Chevy

Of all the used cars my Dad bought for us in the 1960's, my favorite was a '55 Chevy. It had "overdrive" stick shift, so it made it like a 6-speed instead of a 3 speed. No AC, but I think it had power steering.

I'd like to drive one again, someday. Maybe just in my dreams!

Why did you have to bring that up. My lawnmower is going to work at summer camp, so I have to be the lawnmower smile Probably have to start it again this week.

Wednesday

It has rained everyday this week and the forecast is for more rain here in Delawhere.

Thank you (and others) for the concise answers. I thought my question was reasonable. I knew they couldn't be seen from earth and I don't think the hubble uses the visible light spectrum. I thought that there may have been a fly-by at some point in time. It would be interesting (to me) to see if the footprints had changed due meteorites etc.

Something to write about

Our last official Boy Scout meeting is coming up Monday. We celebrate with rocket launches. We launch about 100. We also have pizza that is supplied by the local VFW. If all launch pads cooperate, we can launch 8 at a time. That is a site to see.

Any day you can see the green side of the grass and br lucky enough to play a round of golf is NOT a "bad day at golf".
You just score better some days than your off days.
I personally consider every day on the golf course a VERY GOOD day.
Life is short.........enjoy every bit of it.

Rain in Florida

We are finally getting badly needed rain in the Clearwater, Florida area. That makes it a good June beginning!

Rain in Florida - High water ?

Just curious: Do most GPS units (such as most of you use in cars) give elevation? My Geko is for hikers and shows elevation.

Could these be used find high/dry ground during flooding, storm surge etc?

Tony Wins At Pocono!!!

Congratulations to Tony and the whole Stewart-Haas racing team. That's how you save fuel. grin

Even Ryan finished 5th after an early engine problem. smile

Now if the Magic can just pull themselves back together tonight.

Yeah, but a loss is still a loss. sad 0-2!?!

Maybe coming back to Orlando and playing at home will give them a boost, but if they can't figure out a way to win on the road, they're doomed. Of course, if they continue to lose even at home, it will be a short Finals series.

Unless you have a GPSr that is specifically loaded with topographical maps, you will not see elevation. I'm not aware of any portable vehicle models that come with topo data standard.

--
Garmin 765T...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?

Elevation - Yep

On most GPS units you can look at your location and elevation is included in the detail.

However if you are looking for continous map detail, then you will need to have the topo map.

Not on my Garmin

On my Garmin, there is no elevation info.
