Windshield Mounted GPS....A Safety Feature?

I've been noticing lately how much less often I have to take my eyes off the road and look down at the speedometer to check my speed with the GPSR on my windshield, compared to vehicles where it's built-in and you have to look way down to see your speed and where you are on the map.

Of course the built-in GPS varies in location on different vehicles and some are much easier to look at than others. Some are mounted so low on the panel it's very distracting to have to move your eyes that far down to look at them.

As far as the GPSr blocking your view out the windshield, you have the capability to mount it anywhere on the windshield or dash that you'd like. For it to block something in my view out the windshield, the object would have to be moving in relation to my vehicle and the GPSr location for it to block the object.

What do you guys and gals think?

Only Way

IMO, the dash or windshield is the only logical place. The one problem I have is the grip coming loose when the car interior heats up. I glued the mounting disc to the dash (have to worry about getting it off when I trade the car)allowing me to remove the unit if necessary and cover the disc with a non-slip pad.

Your absolutely right

But then I don't live in California or Minnesota, where windshield mounts are either restricted or prohibited. I myself love my GPS's at windshield level, I even have a problem with vent mounts being to low with the need to take your eyes completely off the road.

AZ Melt...

Windshield mounts don't work too well in the AZ heat.

It will be interesting to see how the Nuvi mount holds up mounted on the dash with the disk since it is still using the suction cup on it.

My StreetPilot is mounted on the crown of the dash to the right of the steering wheel. It was a bit of a reach from the driver, but has a remote control which I found was always better than trying to reach out and touch it.

The new Nuvi mount is now to the left of that closer to me so I can reach it.

I tried for a very short period of time to remove the old StreetPilot mount but it didn't budge. Figured I needed to try removing it when I had more time to work at it.

This should remove the disc from dash.

To remove the old StreetPilot mount, try running a piece of mono-filament fishing line under it. Wrap the line around two wrenches for handles, that will cut it loose. A little goo-gone to remove adhesive.

Bag mount

I really like my Garmin bean bag mount. I can easily slip it under my seat when I park and it doesn't fall off in the heat like my suction mount.

On the instrument panel

I found a great place for my nuvi 750. I have mounted the unit on my instrument panel over top of the tachometer which I never look at or use. "Jill" tells me where to go and I can easily look down to the instrument panel to check speed and map.

The bonus is that there is no indication of a GPS unit in my car from the outside.

Windshield Mount

I agree with you this time BobDee.

California restricts the location on the windshield and Minnesota bans it, ostensibly for safety reasons, but it is probably safer to have it in front of you on the windshield, than to have to keep looking down.

Beanbag Mount

Thanks for the review shadesofgrey. I've been thinking of getting one of these mounts. It would be a lot easier to remove, and I don't think that for my dash I'd have to take my eyes of the road much to view it.

No problem

I'm so impressed with it that I'm NEVER going back to a window mount. Even if it were easy to remove, you still get the telltale suction ring mark on your windshield that says "Hey, something expensive is in here!"

.

It's definitely the most logical and safest place to mount a GPS device. Because of this stupid CA law, I mount mine under my CD radio, right in front of automatic gear shift. The bad thing is I gotta look all the way down to see the display.

There are some advantages:
- mount disk is almost not visible unless you really look for it
- wires don't have to be extended

Removing the Adhesive

Is there a product available that effectively removes the adhesive of the dash-mount disks?

I have used a product called Goo Be Gone for walls and desks, but I don't think it can be used on plastic/vinyl surfaces like car dashes.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Just leave it in the car when you sell/trade it

GPS are getting so popular, the next guy will probably appreciate having it there. I left mine on the dash when I traded it in last summer. Didn't cause even so much as a raised eyebrow during the appraisal.
