looking for 765T with firmware 3.40 feedback

well, I got my replacement 765T from Garmin, after mine died, and it came with firmware 2.50.

I would have thought that Garmin would upgrade the firmware on the refurb units before they ship them out, but I guess not.

anyway, when you run Webupdater, there is no option to grab the same firmware version I had upgraded my original to, 3.30 I think, so I went ahead and grabbed version 3.40, as well as a couple of the optional updates such as the traffic receiver, the text updates, and the voice update for Jill.

I was just wondering if everyone has been happy with this combination, or if Garmin has continued the trend of creating some other issue with this update, that I may not have encountered yet.

I am still on map version 2009, and have not yet registered the replacement to see if it qualifies for the free 2010 update. My original was purchased back in November '08, and therefore did not qualify.

all I really want at this point is a unit that won't reboot on it's own, and will play mp3's while on my route, allowing Jill to interrupt when necessary to keep me on the straight and narrow.

sound reasonable?...sigh rolleyes

You can flash any firmware to the unit that is available for download online (the original v2.20 was never publicly released).

Available firmware as of May 6 2009:

v2.50 http://www.garmin.com/software/nuvi7x5_regionfileonly__250.g...

v3.00 http://www.garmin.com/software/nuvi7x5_regionfileonly__300.g...

v3.10 http://www.garmin.com/software/nuvi7x5_regionfileonly__310.g...

v3.30 http://www.garmin.com/software/nuvi7x5_regionfileonly__330.g...

v3.40 http://www.garmin.com/software/nuvi7x5_regionfileonly__340.g...

Download the version of your choice and drag the region file onto the WebUpdater icon. The unit will be updated to that firmware. You can also backdate if you need to with no ill-effect.

That being said, I've personally found the most stable & bug-free version to be the latest v3.40. In fact, before 3.40 was released, I ran v2.50 because of all the bugs in the other versions.

thanks DorkusNimrod

while I am grateful for feedback from everyone here, I was hoping that you would respond, as I have come to value your input on the 765T greatly.

I am about to go on a road trip to South Carolina for a week beginning Mother's Day weekend, and I feel a little better having heard your feedback about 3.40 being the most stable and bug-free.

No problem Jim...you can also feel free to email me if you'd like.

A few other things I neglected to mention:

Update of the traffic receiver firmware to v5.50 is recommended as well as all other updates to the unit.

I can't comment on Jill correctly interrupting an MP3 file being played since I don't use that function of the nuvi. I have otherwise personally not heard of any problems with this NOT working correctly

If you decide to stay at firmware v3.30, upon installing the map update below, you'll be "forced" into flashing v3.40 (or the most recent version on the Garmin server). You can bypass this "forced" flash and stay at v3.30 using the instructions I've posted below. Or you can allow the forced update, then backdate to v3.30

Use the TTS Voice Editor to increase the volume of the voice you'll be using from 65 to 95. It won't hurt and will make the volume all that much louder.

You should definitely qualify for the 2010.10 map update so go ahead and register and download the update while you can. You have 30 days to do it and there is likely no chance that a new update will be available within that time frame (the next update will likely be July 2009).

* Bypassing firmware update on registration *

Right-click on the file named GarminDevice.xml on the nuvi drive located in x:/Garmin and select "Open With" and choose Notepad. Look for the following line approx 6 lines down from the top:

< SoftwareVersion >320< /SoftwareVersion >

The current software version on the unit is listed here. The example above is 320 (version 3.20) and coincides with the actual version flashed to the unit. Change the 320 (or whatever other version number it is) to 420 or to whatever the current available Garmin version number is. Make no other changes.

*Note that I had to add spaces in the example line above so the forum would not interpret the line as valid html code. Don't add the spaces that I added above.

After doing so, save the file (file/save). Don't unplug or power off the unit...keep it connected to the PC. Run the registration process again which should now let you register the unit. After doing so, be sure and delete GUPDATE.GCD if it gets installed on the nuvi again somewhere in the process.

Don't worry if you somehow mess up on the file editing as this file is regenerated at every nuvi power cycle.

From here on afterwards, you will have to delete GUPDATE.GCD from the nuvi every time after running WebUpdater since each time you do, it will find the newest update and reinstall GUPDATE.GCD again since you will still have an older version on the unit.

Editing the GarminDevice.xml file simply temporarily fools WebUpdater and/or the registration process into thinking that the most current software verison is already installed on the unit. After the nuvi is power cycled & GarminDevice.xml is regenerated, the software version listed in the file will again list the older version that is currently on the unit.

You will also again have to re-edit the GarminDevice.xml file just before before installing the map update to avoid the forced firmware update.

One more thing...there seem to be unverified routing issues being reported using the 2010.10 maps so you may want to stick with the maps that are currently on the unit for a bit. But *do* go ahead & download the 2010.10 maps so you at least have them to update to. I have personally not seen any routing issues with the 2010.10 maps but others have reported strange routing behavior compared to the 2009.11 maps. It could very well be:

1. user-error
2. avoidance settings being mis-selected
3. ecoRoute's "Less Fuel" being selected (which forces you onto 50 mph roads)
4. something else
5. a valid bug with the 2010 maps

Whatever it is, it's something to be aware of.

When you do decide to update the maps on the unit, be sure to backup your mapset and it's related files before doing so (I do this regardless of if I'm updating or not):

x:/Garmin/gmapprom.img
x:/Garmin/gmapprom.unl (if available)
x:/Garmin/gmap3d.img
x:/Garmin/JCV/*.* (whatever file is in here since the name can vary except for the .JCV filename extension)

You can then easily fall back on the previous map version if things seem strange with the new map version.

very, very complete responses!

I really appreciate the benefit of your knowledge and experience, and I hope that I now have a stable 765T that I can count on and enjoy as I had expected to. grin

firmware

I'm not sure what's going on but I tried the v2.50 on my Nuvi 765t and it just bricked my Nuvi. Now all I get is a White screen and unable to do anything with it. Does anyone know what happened? Am I out of a gps now?

Very old

Firmware 2.50 is very very old firmware. The newest version is 3.60 and is available at:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4357

If your PC can still see the attached 765 you could attempt to installed the newest firmware to see if it fixes your problem

This thread will explain what probably happened to your 765T: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/23332. If you can't get it to boot, you can probably fix it by removing and re-inserting the battery, then upgrading the firmware to 3.60.
