I thought about refurb units, but I saw many complaints about poor battery life, old maps and limited warranty. Not a good choice for a gift.

Great Idea

Great Idea, I need to pick up a gift for a graduation.

Considering RM1412

I just had 2 Gamins stolen-- one StreetPilot 550 the other Nuvi 200. I had been very pleased with them, but see the Magellan sale atCostco and also can get refurb 1412 for $80 on Amazon.

Should I make the change? Does a refurb qualify for map update if needed like Garmin?

Other ideas?

Thanks

Thanks

I have bought several RM1412 and think they are a great value for the price.

But, Magellan only offers free map updates for 30 days after purchase of a new unit. This does not include refurb units.

Magellan 1412.

I also bought a 1412 from Costco to test against the Garmin 260W and Tomtom 720.

The 1412 is actually pretty good for a basic GPS. What really bugged me was that you can't change the input keyboard to QWERTY style. If anyone knows how to change the keyboard to QWERTY, let me know.

Thanks!

I may go ahead and get a refurb and take my chances that the maps are not too much out of date.

I just bought one.. The maps

I just bought one recently.. The maps and the POI are somewhat old (I believe Q32007ish), but Magellan does not have an update so the refurb is going to be the same as a new one.

At around $80 for a refurb, I see the unit as somewhat disposable. Its cheaper to buy a new unit, than get the new maps when/if they come out.

I'm more than happy with mine. It works as expected. It has quirks, but I believe they all do... Let me know if you want me to go into more detail there.

.

I saw the 1340 for sale at Costco today (in-store). Nice little unit for $129. It even had signal inside the store.

The newest 1412 comes with updated maps which, for some strange reason, are not available as an upgrade from Magellan. The new maps are ver33. My year old unit has ver31. Which version do you have?

Older, I guess.

Version 31.

Looks like there are new maps up now... Spring 2009

Magellan 1412 on sale at Costco

I got this one, the only problem is it's SLOW!
Ended up buying a Garmin Nuvi 760, but I am keeping the Mag 1412 for "no highway" drives, at this price, it's worth it. (but I don't know what to do SD card site, they have it REALLY taped up too.)

30-day Map Upgrade applies to Referb Units

I just bought a Referb 1412-NA from Tiger Direct. Has v33 maps. I had to Register myself and the GPS. Then, Magellan Customer Service, very polite and helpful, arranged to send the "free" 2009 update (on SD card) to me, for $10 shipping and handling. Easy, simple, and fast.
