CN NA NT 2010.10 & Junction View...broken? *FIXED*

I believe that the 2010.10 map update has broken Junction View on the 7x5 (at least on my end). Note: Junction View is referring to the brief photo-realistic view of the upcoming junction on your route & NOT the Lane Assist arrows at the upper left of the map screen.

I have two different test areas here in SoCal and neither of them work after the 2010.10 update. If revert back to the previous 2009.11 maps and associated Junction View files, everything works as it did before the update.

I've even tried using the previous 2009.11 Junction View file renamed to the current name (x:/Garmin/JCV/CNNA2010_10.JCV) with no luck. My next test will be to try the original 2009 Junction View file that came pre-installed on the unit & renamed to match the new.

Is anyone running 2010.10 and still getting the Junction View display?

Disappointed

I've got to say how disappointed I am with my Garmin experience as a whole.

On the upside, they've got really nice design for both hardware & software, & their tech support is polite & seems to care. Unfortunately, I've never had so many ongoing problems with anything, nor a buggier product. The touchscreen issue on my first unit, then the last map update that rendered their factory installed POI's useless & now this.

As a mac user I've always believed updates to be a good thing. They, in theory, are supposed to make things better but at this point I'm afraid to update this thing. I still qualify for my "one free map update" but if it kills junction view, I wouldn't want to have to buy the next update to fix it... & break something else.

It would be different if their main business were, I don't know, making ice cream & they provided GPSr's as a value added service to their customers, but they charge a lot of money for them & it is their business.

So tell us, did it work?

.

I am re-downloading the newly updated file (Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010B.exe) where I will extract the contents using WinRAR before going through any "install" process. The Junction View file (along with the 3D map and timezone map) is in the Additions folder where they are usable directly from there (they are not compressed and can use directly by the nuvi simply by copying them over). I'll copy the JCV file within the archive directly to the nuvi and report back with my findings.

Another user has reported that Junction View was corrected after redownloading/installing the 2010B file.

Well...

That seems to be the only way to get the updated file since the one offered by Garmin that I linked to is currently still corrupt (different file sizes each download). Unless someone wants to host only the JCV file and post the link to it, that's the only way to get it. I don't know the legality involved but I can assume the JCV file is copyrighted...

Did you verify that the file you got actually works? You never did say if it did or didn't...

Garmin Says It's Fixed

Just got off the phone with Garmin checking on when my replacement 765 was shipped and I asked about the JV problem, they told me it was fixed. I wonder if only those that were 1st to download the 2010 have to use an update and from today on the original file has been fixed and no need for further downloads.

Garmin says many things and even posts "fixes" and updates...but that doesn't mean very much to me after this mess. The only way to know for sure if it works is to verify it with others here and in other forums and personally on my end.

Agreed Dorkus

I would be right in there with you guys trying to find a solution if my unit was not already sitting in Olathe. Garmin also seems to be negating some of the advantage they have in customer service by not hiring enough people. Used to it took maybe 5 minutes to get a CSR but for awhile now the minimum wait seems to have gone up to 15 minutes and more often than not 30 minutes or more.

What is the size

I do not have the 7x5 so can not verify but downloaded the change anyway. The JCV file size I got is 38,392,832 bytes. Is this the correct one as I do not want to get the whole update again. sad

verified fix

I have verified that the JV file from the newly released Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010B.exe file fixes the broken JV issue without having to reinstall the entire map package (although I have done so just to be on the safe side)....just copy D1279020A.JCV from the Additions folder from the unpacked .exe file above to your x:/Garmin/JCV folder. The file size is 36.6 MB (38,385,300 bytes). You may also need to delete or rename other previous .JCV files in that folder for it to work.

The file posted at the online tech support site earlier is still borked after being updated again later this morning.

Don't use that one...it does NOT work and every time you download it, it's a different size. I downloaded it 5 times at least and every time, it was different.

I downloaded the original Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010.EXE file on Sunday, 4/12. In it, the D1279020A.JCV file is exactly the same size - 38,385,300. The modified date for the original file was 3/17/09 12:59PM. The modified date on the new file is 3/20/09 10:07AM.

I zipped the new file, but got very little compression. The compressed zip file was still over 36Mb.

My junction view still doesn't work...what a crap!

After reading this forum and my own experience with 2010.10 map update I believe that owners of nuvis 7x5 are beta testers for Garmin. Responsible company wouldn't release major update without testing it first. Garmin's products have a nice design, and cool features, but how many customers will buy their product again after experiences like this one? I overpaid this product because I thought that I get what I pay for. Unfortunately with Garmin it didn't hapen...

@ vk55

Did you delete all other .JCV files on your nuvi in the x:/Garmin/JCV folder? The only one in there should be D1279020A.JCV which is the correct version for the new 2010.10B map download (unless you rename the others NOT to end in the .JCV extension)

@DorkusNimrod

I appreciate your try to help but how I can get Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010.10b and file D1279020A.JCV which suppose to work? I was on Garmin site and all I could get is file CNNA2010_10.JCV.JCV (size 39,404,544) which didn't work for other users and in instructions it says, it is zipped file, which is not. It seems to me like another crap and one support technician don't know what the other one is posting.

@vk55

You cannot use the file at Garmin's support page as it does NOT work. You have to re-downwload the FULL map update again to get that file. Note that it will be listed in your myGarmin account as 2010.10 but when you download the file again, it will be the 2010.10B (note the B) version.

1. Go to your myGarmin account and login.

2. Click on "Manage Maps and Downloads"

3. Connect the GPS that you downloaded the 2010.10 maps for to the PC using the USB cable.

4. Find the GPS you downloaded the 2010.10 maps for and click on "Download Again"

5. Follow the prompts to download the file to your PC

6. After doing so, download/install WinRAR www.rarsoft.com or another RAR capable file extractor.

7. Rename the 2010.10B map update to end with a .rar file extension (Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010.10B.exe.rar).

8. Usse WinRAR to extract it's contents to another folder on your PC.

9. After the file extraction, browse to the extracted files folder to the Additions folder and copy the file named D1279020A.JCV to your nuvi's x:/Garmin/JCV folder. If other Junction View files are still in there, either delete them or rename them to something other than that with a .JCV filename extension. Example: D1279010B.JCV rename to D1279010B.JCV.disabled if you want to disable it without deleting it. The file needs to be the only active (ending in .JCV) Junction View file in that folder.

10. Thank Garmin tech support.

Do these multiple map updates count against the 4 updates allowed per year under NuMaps Lifetime? Or is there not really a 4 updates per year limit?

I believe when all of the kinks are worked out there are only supposed to be quarterly releases.

In this case it was a release that clearly broke something.

I'm not expecting the bug-fix releases to count against the 4 updates. I have the nuMaps Lifetime for my 765T and according to myGarmin account, I have only downloaded the following:

Region: City Navigator North America NT 2010.10, Deluxe 3DB+JV, All Regions, Apr 09

Despite the fact that I have also downloaded the 2010.10B (note the B) update, no mention of that download is made anywhere. It's only accessible when re-downloading the 2010.10 file which is replaced by the 2010.10B update.

After all headaches with 2010.10 map update for my nuvi 765t, downloading, re-downloading of fixed files from Garmin (which didn't work at all), in order to fix broken junction view, then missing 3D map completly, I ended up with callig Garmin technical support. After endless waiting on the phone I reached software specialist, who was very polite and extremly helpful. She had to get remotely connected to my muvi through my computer, to get my muvi fixed. Atitude of the technician, was my only satisfactory experience with Garmin.
Fortunately this was my free 60-day update, reading all negative experience of the other users, I must agree with them.
I was considering of buying lifetime map updates, but after all of this, not anymore...

An official fix

For those interested, Garmin has released an official fix for the 2010.10 Junction View issue which does not require you to download the entire 2010.10B update just to obtain the new Junction View file. The download is 36.56 MB.

Download the CNNA NT 2010.1 Junction View software version 2010.1 zip archive and extract the file (CNNA2010_10.JCV) in the compressed archive to a folder on your hard drive or directly to the x:/Garmin/JCV folder on the nuvi. Note: if there are other *.JCV files contained in that folder, they will need to be deleted as only one Junction View file in that folder ending with .JCV will be recognized.

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4457

Also, the actual file does NOT require an "official" name *except for the .JCV file extension which is required*. I just renamed the working JCV file to "blahblah.JCV" and it works just as it should.

Fix for Junction View/Lane Assist

If you want this fixed, call into Garmin's tech support, and when you talk to a "tech", ask to be transferred to software support.

The software support tech can go into your computer, take control and transfer the file over. ONLY the software support staff can do this, and I believe you will find this the only way to fix this issue.

It is a known issue, and it stems from the fact the mapping was not tested prior to release. The corrupt file is most likely due to problems with the internal system/servers at the Garmin side.

Unfortunately, this is becoming all too common as Garmin rushes to release updates/mapping without testing. Currently the Nuvi 200/205 will not install the mapping because they try to install the entire mapping, NOT just the US or Canadian, so you will end up having to call support to get them to dial in and fix by transferring an image file.

This also stems from the lay off of the support staff that was laid off, no longer testing and cutting corners to save money is causing problems in the updates and mapping.

Look at my post about the "new and improved" web updater. The web updater program is getting ready to be released as a program that runs in your system tray, leaving a hole in your system, and possibly causing security problems in the future. Do you really want to have one more process running all the time? Do you want to lose control of your PC allowing a program to take control?

Call and let them know you are wanting quality control on the equipment. Write into the senior staff, go to www.garmin.com and you can find the executives, and contact them via email and/or snail mail letting them know what you need....

Just my opinion...and inside info from Garmin.

Do you have an area where you have verified that Junction View (JV) worked in the past but is now broken? If so, post a start point/end point set of coordinates so that other users (including myself) can verify your findings. It can easily be tested by enbling simulation on the GPS and simulating a route through the start point/end point coordinates as I previously posted:

Quote:

Start point: N34 04.052 W117 58.954
End point: N34 03.606 W118 00.085

You can create two favorites with the start point being 1/2 mile from the known junction *on the roadway* and the end point being 1/2 mile after the junction *on the roadway*. Then simulate the route.

1.Turn GPS simulation on (Tools>Settings>System>)
2.Find the start point favorite, select it.
3.Hit the Map button, hit Set Loc. button
4.Hit the Back button twice
5.Select the end point favorite, hit Go and simulate driving the route.

Has the problem been fixed? 2010.20 is now out.

Also, can we use the standardized, widely and commonly accepted co-ordinate format of decimal degrees: hddd.ddddd?

Thanks

.

It was fixed/corrected in the second release (2010.10B) of 2010.10. There was also a third release of 2010.10 (2010.10C) which corrected map installation issues on low/limited memory (1 GB) nuvi units like the original nuvi 200. All releases after 2010.10B do NOT have the broken Junction View bug that was in the initial release.
